We think you will be as interested as we are by the volume of writing produced, the range of genres represented by the contributions to the study, and the intensity of engagement with writing our participants demonstrated in their first two years of college. Of special note is the amount and range of self-sponsored or non-assigned writing. As you survey these observations, please feel free to send us your thoughts and questions to writing@vpue.stanford.edu . The principal investigator of this study, Professor Andrea Lunsford, may be reached at lunsford@stanford.edu To date we have received 8,000 writing contributions.
More than 3,200 contributions were submitted during academic year 2001-2002; 3,100 were submitted during 2002-2003. We are gratified by the continuing contributions, and impressed by the richness of the data: participants are submitting writing from categories of communication ranging from research papers to lab reports, web sites, audio-visual materials, clip-art, charts, graphs, e-mail, chat room postings, fiction, poetry, and a myriad of self-sponsored creative writing.

  • The consumer may have benefited from industrialization, but in most cases the worker did not. More goods were available and usually at lower prices but at what cost to the worker. Factory conditions deteriorated making them unsafe and unhealthy with low pay and long hours. Government usually favored the factory owners, therefore reform and protective legislation was a long time in coming. Freed of the bonds of patronage and crowded by the invention of the camera, the artist had to redefine his role in a rapidly changing society. Stepping outside the establishment gave him the freedom to comment, protest or simply portray his impressions. Art was dynamic, experimental and often times rebellious. The Romantic artists perused beauty in nature and the splendors of past ages. Realists attempted the truthful portrayal of the real world, objective and unprejudiced. Impressionists were more interested in perception while Post-Impressionist artists gave personal significance to their subject matter.

Women’s Contributions to History Displays
Members of the St. Lawrence County Branch, AAUW planned and put up displays and picture galleries in the display cases and hallways of the A. A. Kingston Middle School as part of the Women’s History Month project. There were four main display areas, as well as scattered posters throughout the corridors of the school. Women in Science and Mathematics was a picture gallery of women who have made significant contributions to science and math which was set up on a wall near the 7th and 8th grade science rooms. A glass display case near the social studies rooms in that same wing was set up with a theme of Women Who Dared The main display case at the 5th and 6th grade entrance to the building featured Women and Girls in the News . Many of the pictures and news stories featured local women or girls, even some current or former AAK students or their mothers. This display was designed to show girls that they can do something newsworthy, whether it is getting their picture in the paper for making a contribution to their basketball team or for working on a Girl Scout project . The fourth major display area featured Women in Non-traditional Occupations . These displays not only educated and inspired the students and staff who attend AAK everyday, but also adults who use the school after regular hours. One of the activities is walking the nearly one-half mile of corridors to keep fit during the long North Country winters. The posters and display cases brightened the way as well as educated the community about the many contributions and achievements made by women.

Enhancing Living Through Creativity About the Program for Women and Successful Aging Americans are living longer than ever. As a result the over-65 population is growing at a steady rate. In 1990, over 12 percent of all Americans were over 65. By 2030, 20 percent of all Americans will be in this age bracket. These demographics underscore the importance of research focusing on the physical, social, and emotional aspects of aging. The promotion of programs becomes particularly relevant for women because 1) Women live, on average, seven years longer than men;
2) Women currently make up 60 percent of all Americans over 65; and
3) Women currently comprise 70 percent of all elderly 85 and older. This imbalance is projected to continue far into the future, as female baby boomers will continue to make up the majority of elderly throughout this century. The Program for Women and Successful Aging PWSA was founded in 1994 to answer this imbalance, by creating a climate that encourages an appreciation of older women.

CREATIVE WRITING SYLLABUS 2003-2004 /Heather Woodward Course Description Beginning/Intermediate Creative Writing is an introductory course in the reading and writing of poetry, fiction, and drama, the first course in a projected four-year Creative Writing program at the School of the Arts. This introductory course will focus on why we write, writing across genres, reading across cultures and genres, developing writing projects within the SOTA community and beyond, and becoming aware of and increasingly involved in the larger writing and publishing community. This course will encourage the desire to write, locating its sources, and shaping the results. Intermediate/Advance Creative Writing is an extension and expansion of the beginning/intermediate course, where juniors and seniors will have the opportunity for relevant internships and seniors will focus on a manuscript to submit for publication. Students in both courses will investigate the particularities of three genres (poetry, short fiction, and, to a lesser extent this year, drama) and experiment with the craft techniques of each.

(1985, fiction) had her short stories "Skiathos," published by the Union Street Review and "Ameera" published in Confrontation. Her collection of stories is Fields of Fig and Olive: Ameera and Other Stories of the Middle East. Betsy Andrews (1997) had a text-based sculpture in a juried international art show in New York City. The show, Liberty Enlightening the World, commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty. Barbara Bass (1988, fiction) published her short story "Summer Leaves, Hiding Eyes Like Yours," in the Union Street Review in 1990. Oscar Bennett (1991, fiction) has published a novel his first.
