Shakespeare Milton Keats Tolstoy Nabokov Hemingway Chandler Larkin Tolkien RS Thomas T he term 'literary writing' calls to mind works by writers such as Shakespeare, Milton, or Wordsworth; definitive examples of all that the term implies. We instinctively associate the term with characteristics such as artistic merit, creative genius, and the expression of mankind's noblest qualities. In this essay I will explore some of the characteristics of this kind of writing.
Literary works are primarily distinguishable from other pieces of writing by their creative, or artistic intent.
A piece of literature differs from a specialised treatises on astronomy, political economy, philosophy, or even history, in part because it appeals, not to a particular class of readers only, but to men and women; and in part because, while the object of the treatise is simply to impart knowledge, one ideal end of the piece of literature, whether it also imparts knowledge or not, is to yield aesthetic satisfaction by the manner of which it handles its theme. The writer of this passage emphasises the distinction between writing of didactic purpose and literary writing which has that other, aesthetic, dimension. In fundamental terms literature is 'an expression of life through the medium of language'

Introduction
The Mesopotamian plain was part of the Fertile Crescent. Situated between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, the area was the birth place of the varied civilizations that developed writing, schools, libraries, written law codes and moved us from prehistory to history. The Sumerians, Akkadians, Chaldeans, Hittites, Babylonians, Israelites, Phoenicians, Lydians, Assyrians and Persians established the foundations for future Civilizations. Their contributions include: the wheel, glass, the sail, coinage, mathematics, the alphabet, calendars, bronze, iron, monotheism, epic poetry, farming and irrigation. The art of Mesopotamia is as diverse as the civilizations that inhabited the area. Art became decorative, stylized and conventionalized at different times and places in the area. Gods took on human forms and humans were combined with animals to make fantastic creatures. Art commemorated the accomplishments of great men and intimidated the lowly. Skills improved and new media was developed. Large temples and imposing palaces dotted the landscape. Man recorded his history and poetry for the first time and set them down to music. Lyres, pipes, harps and drums accompanied their songs and dances.

Glamorous. The story of a decision
Veronika Fillitz
For weeks have I now been asking my friends - FOR WEEKS!! Blond hair or no blond hair, that’s the question... Blondes have more fun, blondes are generally preferred. After all, I have to emphasize my astonishing resemblance to Marylyn... so...blond? Being asked about `blond or not blond´, my mum did not pay much attention. "Girl, you have been talking about an awful lot of things without ever having realised them. Consider marrying D., consider finishing your studies, consider..." D., normally not really interested in hair as long as no blond woman is passing by, supported my plan. Do it if you feel like it, he said whil watching soccer. It was the night that England drew 2-2 with Macedonia and Wales beat Italy 2-1... F., my best friend, was enthusiastic about my plan, frantically trying to convince me entirely. "D. will probably like that a lot, you know, he seems to have - how shall I put it - a slight preference for blond women..." As if I wouldn’t know... Even at work, my coplleagues were excited. M., my very special F(R)IEND at work, showed her support by saying that my hair colour would eventually fit my character, my arrogance and bad temper would then be matched with my hair-do. Sly old M.!!

Sandra And John Walsh (October 2002)
John Walsh has been one of my personal heroes for a long time. So I felt a mixture of excitement-and trepidation-when I was introduced to him. What if, over the years, he had become more of "a star" than someone dedicated to justice and righting wrongs?
My fears were put to rest immediately. John Walsh is a kind man and a very gracious host. He put all of us at ease right off the bat and during the breaks in taping, made it a point to talk to each of us in a gently teasing way.
It's very gratifying to meet someone you've admired over the years and find that your admiration has been well placed.
Moms Who Made It Happen (October 2002)
I've received a ton of e-mail over my appearance on The John Walsh Show. People tell me they've been inspired and motivated to finally put their dreams in action; yet it was I who drew inspiration and encouragement from each of these women with whom I had the privilege to share a stage.
Not only were these women fun to talk to, but they were genuinely interested in what the other's business area was. I'll let you in on a little secret too-there were three of us who needed glasses (we couldn't wear them on stage due to the glare) and were myopic as bats. The last 50 feet to get to a sound stage is a hodgepodge of cables, ropes and other assorted barriers duct taped to the floor; you go from brightly lit areas to murky shadows within seconds-all potential disasters. As we made our way through the maze, we lightly held onto each other, with whispered encouragement. "Step....watch here...blue chord there...be careful. Step up...stage is on the right."

In fact, one of the most prolific renga artists, Basho Matsuo, is well known as one of the most important figures in traditional haiku poetry.) While similar to renga follows a set of strictly (or loosely, depending on the poets) followed rules. Rules that were often followed include:
  • Your verse should create a completed thought when combined with the previous verse. Any two sequential stanzas can stand alone. Your verse should change the theme followed by the previous two verses. In other words, when you make your contribution, only pay attention to the verse before yours, forget about what happened before that. Each verse should in some way reflect one of the accepted themes popular in Japanese poetry of the day, such as seasons (especially change and transience of) and travel (around this time, men were often sent to far-away lands to govern, while their families remained behind as a form of ransom. ABC Tales

ABC Tales is a website (with a supporting printed magazine) that allows budding new writers to get their work published for free whilst offering readers the chance to read and offer feedback on stories and poems. Selected stories from those submitted to the website will be chosen for inclusion in the regular printed magazine (which is available to buy from Body Shop stores nationwide). The site is the brainchild of John Bird, founder of the Big Issue magazine. Abebooks

The creative writing programs at the University of Melbourne are located in the Department of English with Cultural Studies and the School of Creative Arts. Creative writing at Melbourne offers students an exciting and productive environment in which to acquire and develop essential skills in creative writing through a range of subjects. The programs encourage work that combines creative and critical abilities. The focus of the programs is on developing students' writing skills and publication opportunities. The programs offer a number of subjects and study areas, including prose fiction and poetry as well as non-fiction, performance, editing and scriptwriting, which provide opportunities for students to produce their own work under the guidance of professionally accredited practitioners who are technically expert in their specific areas. Many of them have close links with the publishing and film-production industries, and can keep you in touch with current developments. Graduates of this program have been extremely successful in seeing their work featured in a wide range of publications, and many have won awards in national competitions for their work. Staff are dedicated to fostering a learning experience that students will value their whole lives, and they aim to help students to produce writing of a publishable standard.
