http://5dspace-time.org/Whichone.html
Religion or Science: Which ONE is right? Unlike certain other languages of the world, such as Chinese, speakers of English and related languages do not have one unified model of the world, but have two very different and seemingly incompatible and mutually exclusive models of the world. These models are known as religion and science. Over the last two to three thousand years, there has been an ongoing and often very violent controversy among followers of religion and followers of science. Which ONE is right? Is nature ruled by the god(s) of religion, or by the laws of science? Is the religious belief in creation right, or is the scientific knowledge of evolution right? People for some reason seem to tend to believe that there can be only ONE right answer and only ONE right way to understand and relate to the world, and that any other answer and any other way must therefore be wrong. Is this a reasonable way to believe? Although it is natural for people to believe that their truth is THE truth, must it follow that other people's truth must therefore be false. Even though other people believe equally fervently in their truth, must they be somehow less true? Or, is it possible that each person's truth is not THE truth, but is A truth, one of as many equally and individually valid approaches to the truth of nature as there are people in the world. Millions of people around the world believe very devoutly in their religion. Many people devote their lives to religion. Many people throughout history have willingly given up their lives rather than give up their belief in their religion. Is it possible, and is it reasonable for followers of science to think, that as well-meaning as these millions of people may be, they are fundamentally wrong, misguided, in error, and mistaken? Is it reasonable to think that the deep-seated belief in religion that is a driving force in the lives of these millions of people is nothing more than an accident of upbringing and a mistake?

Evolution In Debate with Evolutionists
by Rachel D. Ramer
from the Witnessing Tips column of the Christian Research Journal, Winter 1994, page 7. The Editor-in-Chief of the Christian Research Journal is Elliot Miller.
There is more to discussing evolution than debating the age of the earth or the wing breadth of the archaeopteryx. There is value, for example, in examining how evolutionists make their defense. Looking beyond the argument to the arguer's techniques can expose fallacious reasoning which keep many from considering the God of Creation.
If Christians plan to argue from the Genesis account of creation, they must first support biblical authenticity. Although the Bible can be supported, that may be the long way around. When Scripture is introduced, evolutionists launch into one of their "best" fallacies: false distinction the banning of "religion" from scientific debate.
A shortcut is to point out how evolutionists engage in logical fallacies such as the "straw man," "bias ad hominem," "false distinction," and "non sequitur" fallacies. The first three are used in attempts to invalidate the creationists' stance; the fourth endeavors to validate macroevolution (the change from one species into another) as legitimate science.
The Argument You So Eloquently Refuted Was Not Mine! A strawman fallacy involves the misrepresentation of an opponent's argument to refute him or her easily. Stephen Jay Gould, in his article, "Evolution as Fact and Theory" in the May 1981 issue of Discover Magazine, attempted to refute creationism by saying, "We have abundant, direct, observational evidence of evolution in action, from both the field and the laboratory." His point: evolution is an irrefutable fact, and creationists ignore this certainty.

EVOLUTION VS CREATION SCIENCE
(Creation Science is now sometimes called Intelligent Design Theory) 1. Who opposes evolution?
    a. Creation "science," although even creationists accept much of evolution,
= groups of fundamentalist who claim a literal interpretation of the Bible
    b. NOT many Christians and Jews
e.g., United Methodist, Roman Catholic, Episcopal, Prebyterian, American Jewish Congress
    c. NOT the overwhelming majority of scientists
2. What is evolution?
A change in the percent of different genetic traits over time.
3. Isn't evolution just a theory?
    a. You can measure evolution in nature, in the lab, on the farm. (see references and web links below).
    b. Evolutionary theory is the verbal and mathematical ideas about how (NOT whether) evolution occurs
just like talking the theory of gravity doesn't reflect doubt about whether gravity occurs
    c. To see how easily and obviously evolution can occur, play candy evolution it's fun and tasty

4. Why not teach creation science in science classes alongside evolution?

Issues in Creation vs. Evolution
Last time I gave you a rough "map" of evolution and anti-evolutionary positions. Now, I'll start with an outline of the typical issues that might be debated, and the points which are made. As usual, the lists I make are not supposed to be definitive: I'm giving you a sampling of the arguments and issues, highlighting what I think are interesting or important, but it's by no means exhaustive. Also, keep in mind that I come from a very much mainstream scientific perspective what I say is probably going to be colored by that. Just remember, as I've been pointing out from day one, that you should feel free to disagree with me. Scientific Arguments Young earth vs Old earth Flood geology: catastrophism Conventional geology: change at many scales Population growth, helium, magnetic field decay, ... "Deep time," radiometric dating Separate "kinds" vs Common ancestry No true transitional fossils Transitions: reptile-mammal, whale, ... No possible intermediates (what good is half a wing?)

Creation vs. Evolution
Erica asked: What should I believe: Darwin or Genesis? I take "believe" to mean something close to "accept without questioning" or "accept as an assumption". In that case, my position is that one should believe neither Darwin nor Genesis. What one should do is look at the logic behind the position, and at the evidence for (or against) it. What is the logic and evidence for the Judeo-Christian creation myth being true? Is there more reason for that particular creation myth to be the case than for, say, the Hindu creation myth? The Buddhist? What about the creation myths of the American Indians? If you want, you can probably find literally dozens of creation myths... just because you have been raised in the tradition of one doesn't give that one particular priority, does it? So, then, how do you choose? On what basis? Well, how about the strange, radical, recent idea of looking at evidence? Bizarre, right? Now, there are lots of people around right now who are trashing Darwinism, for one reason or another... mostly religious. Let's look at the basic logic of the evolutionary thesis.

Beyond Creation vs. Evolution: Taking the Full Measure of the Materialist Challenge

For the better part of the past century, evangelicals have become increasingly frustrated as modern science's hold on crucial sectors of society has blocked certain of their most cherished aspirations. In recent years this frustration has swirled around the debate over the content of the science curriculum in public schools, a contest in which evangelicals have made an enormous investment of time, energy, and resources. It would be difficult to calculate the large number of man-hours or the huge amount of money that evangelicals have invested in their effort to achieve the goal of pluralism in the public school curriculum. And, while some evangelical leaders see progress in the not-unfavorable wording of a recent California law on the subject, evangelicals still have no real foothold for their viewpoint in the public school classrooms of the land. The public school curriculum is a stronghold which evolutionists confidently occupy. They consider their position to be unassailable, and a series of recent court decisions has given them every reason to believe that they can withstand any future assaults as well. Spearheading this attack is a new school of science apologists, armed with a panoply of lavish publications and televised productions; allied with societies and associations of science professionals, numerous publishing houses, and public television networks; and represented by articulate and prolific spokesmen, whose credentials, positions, and accomplishments leave no doubt in the public's mind that these men know whereof they speak. The thrust of this initiative reaches far beyond the public school classroom to cut across every segment of our society.

Frequently Encountered Criticisms in Evolution vs. Creationism
Edited by Mark I. Vuletic hume@vuletic.com Last updated on 20 December 2003
Introduction
"Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution." Theodosius Dobzhansky The purpose of this document is to introduce and respond to some of the claims various creationists make in the evolution vs. creationism controversy. The creationist criticisms covered are directed mainly at four targets:
  • The evolutionary history of life, as well as its mainstream proponents. The idea that the origin of life did not require direct supernatural intervention. The idea that the universe, or at least the Earth, is substantially older than 6,000 years. The idea that the origin of the universe did not require direct supernatural intervention.
It must immediately be pointed out that the second, third, and fourth categories have nothing to do with evolution, properly speaking, since evolution cannot take place until a replicator exists. However, since creationists tend to lump multiple categories together under titles like "evolution", "evolutionism", or "Darwinism", criticisms in all four categories are legitimate targets for rebuttal in a document devoted to the evolution vs. creationism controversy. I can only exhort the reader to be cautious not to conflate evolution with naturalism, creationist attempts to confuse the issue notwithstanding. Allow me to make several more comments:

Creationism Buy A Ticket Where Conflicts Arise ... Red Flag Words Editor's note: The January EXPLORER article on creationism and teaching trends in the United States struck a large chord with our readers, as evidenced by the many lengthy letters (see March and April EXPLORERs). Here are some more of those thoughts.
Creationism (Continued) return to top
Two letters to the EXPLORER (March) misinterpret my views concerning debates with creationists. The journals "Skeptical," "Inquirer" and "Evolution versus Creationists" warn evolutionists from attending debates organized by creationists. Such organizers setup conditions to assure their winning of these debates, which include packing the auditorium with biblical literalists and fundamentalists who boo these supporting evolution and brand them satanists and atheists, such as I have experienced. The truth is not in them. Probably I have written more letters to the Tulsa newspapers defending evolution from attacks by anti-evolutionists than any other geologist. Often I have been disappointed at the weak response from my fellow geologists.

Evolution vs. Creation Round XVIII
This NYT Article describes a creationist theme park in Florida. Pretty interesting stuff and a new front in the old creation vs. evolution battle. Without delving into the nitty-gritty of the creation vs. evolution debate, this article made me wonder what the potential educational ramifications of this are. It appears to me that we are heading toward a future in which school age children will be at the forefront of a divisive war for the truth. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs, however we enter into a dangerous gray area when those beliefs manifest themselves inside of the classroom. Of course, there is home schooling and religious education, but the science curriculum of public schools is where this debate plays out most explosively. There has been a long history of creationism versus evolution in US education, most famously the Scopes Monkey Trial Posted by jgallo at May 1, 2004 07:44 PM

I am a Registered Mechanical Engineer and I love science and learning about science. I have been studying the Creation vs. Evolution for several years and have made this text file to present a clear, easy to understand case for Creation. This case for Creation will be built using science. Whether you are a Christian, an agnostic, or a convinced atheist, I feel you should check out the enclosed information on this very important topic. I feel every one has a right to believe whatever they want. However, I think it is a shame that many people dismiss belief in God as "unscientific," or "superstitious" without ever hearing its case. It could have something to do with the unscientific nature of the Bible.
