62. Piranha's Tank -- All Knowledge Is Worth Having: Crafts (general) Archives
it s no big deal for a transfer meant for carving, but i am thinking transfers in general. she s very eager to please in general. oh well.

1st eraser stamp
i remember vaguely that at some time during my school art curriculum we did potato prints, and a bit later linoleum cuts, and that's the last time i carved anything. i'd just like to say here that i wish i'd had more enthusiastic art teachers instead of the uptight judgmental regimentists i had i would have had so much more fun, and might not struggle so much with my damn inner perfectionist. i'm hereby expressing my strong support for public school education in the arts, but dammit, drop the fucking grades, and hire more teachers who actually enjoy encouraging kids to explore. well, this might actually happen in today's schools; i wouldn't know. anyway, all that because, of course, my inner perfectionist is complaining that i should not show my first ever eraser carving to the world because it is so pathetic. but frankly, my inner child is excited and thinks the little stamp has a charm of its own. so, here it is: i need a better knife, that's for sure i think i want one with a short, stiff, sharp blade. i liked neither the standard x-acto blade for this nor the roundish speedball one i have. i'd also want a couple of other gouges my thrift store speedball set includes only a very wide round one aside from 3 v-gouges, and all but the smallest v-gouge are way too big for this sort of tiny work. i should see whether lee valley has an affordable miniature woodcarving set.

63. Sweater -- Free Guidelines For Knit Or Crochet
Offers general instructions for a basic raglan sweater.
http://www.io.com/~cortese/crafts/raglan.html
General Guidelines for a Basic Sweater
Okay, how in Kali's name can anyone give you directions for a sweater that work for both knitting and crochet? Well, the answer is that this isn't a pattern, but simply a set of guidelines with which you can get a general idea how to make a basic sweater. Many of the same basic construction guidelines hold for both knitting and crochet, even if the particulars differ. You can build a bookcase using either a hammer and nails, or a screwdriver and some screws. The particulars might differ, but many of the same general principles hold. The type of sweater I'm going to go over here is called a raglan sweater. There are variations on this, and I'll run over them lightly at the end, but for now, I'll be examining a very basic type of raglan sweater. (Here's a picture of one that I crocheted so you can see what it looks like.) The advantages to raglan sweaters are numerous, but the major one is that you don't have to worry about your gauge. Normally, when you buy a commercial sweater pattern, you need to make sure you stay in the gauge that the pattern calls for, or else you could end up with a sweater that will fit a seven foot tall penguin or a three foot tall garden rake but certain not you or anyone you know. Raglans are made from the neck down, and you can try them on as you go, so you just sort of keep going until you have to stop. Trying on as you go is a lot easier when you're crocheting than knitting, but you can manage with both.

The Greenville store has been a retail landmark in downtown since the late 1800s when it was a shoe and dry goods store. It is probably best known to long-time Greenvillians as the "old Meyers-Arnold," a locally-owned retailer which carried everything from housewares and lingerie to men's shoes and linens. After Meyers-Arnold closed its downtown location, several other retailers occupied the building a 111 North Main Street including a public market featuring several vignettes and small shops. Today, this downtown emporium has been restored to its 1920s' grandeur featuring fixtures from the era and other mementos from the past displaying Mast's unique blend of traditional clothing for men and women from such names as Woolrich, Flyshacker

Leaded Glass
Louis Comfort Tiffany
Louis Comfort Tiffany, one of the most creative and prolific designers of the late 19th century, declared that his life-long goal was "the pursuit of beauty." With its comprehensive assemblage of Tiffany's work, the Morse Museum's collection uniquely documents that quest. Although his father, Charles Lewis, had founded the most prestigious silver and jewelry company in America, Louis chose another professional direction. Originally trained as a painter, he began studying the chemistry and techniques of glassmaking when he was 24. He developed this interest as a partner in the firm of Louis C. Tiffany and Associated Artists, which in its four years of operation (1879-1883) provided innovative interior decoration for clients ranging from Mark Twain in Hartford, Connecticut to President Chester Arthur at the White House. Both schools thought that they alone were being "truthful," an ideal central to the philosophy of the Arts and Crafts movement. Equally important was the goal of design unity. First manifested in his efforts to create complete interiors, Tiffany's commitment to unity was extended to the design and manufacture of stained glass. The leading necessary to hold the pieces of glass together became a fully integrated design element, simulating, for example, the stems of plants. And Tiffany was convinced that the actual production of a stained-glass window required the artist's involvement at every stage, even in a factory setting-from creating the first sketches to overseeing how the glass was selected, cut and assembled.

Cinco de Mayo (May 5th)
Mexican Independence Day (Sept 16th)
Mexican Revolution (Nov 20) As many of you know... I'm Canadian, not Mexican. But I know how tough it can be to find stuff on "non-U.S. holidays" so I thought I'd try to put a few pages together for Cinco de Mayo. To be honest, I'm not 100% sure what crafts I've made will be the best for Cinco de Mayo, Mexican Independence Day or the Mexican Revolution (it's hard to truly get the flavour of a holiday from books). If any viewers have thoughts on "best crafts" to recommend for the day, please let me know know and I'll make note of them on this page. One of our Mexican viewers wrote to us with some information about Mexican customs and holidays. Click here to read what Guadalupe had to say. Mexicans have a celebration called Cinco de Mayo every May 5th (Cinco de Mayo means the fifth of May). Click here to learn more about the origins of Cinco de Mayo.
