EMAIL ARTICLE LINK TO ARTICLE PRINT ARTICLE Article Published: Saturday, July 26, 2003 Debate rages over media's treatment of accuser By Steve Wilstein, The Associated Press EAGLE - To most of the public, she is known only as Kobe Bryant's accuser, an anonymous teen whose photograph never appears in newspapers or on television. Many of the details of her life - where she lives and goes to school, when she auditioned for American Idol, how she was rushed to a hospital for a mental health problem last winter - have been widely reported. Friends and acquaintances talk about her, offering snippets of insight and speculation. Still, her name is kept out of stories. Yet the 19-year-old woman's name has been broadcast on the radio to 60 cities by a talk-show host, and her identity - complete with address and phone number - has been posted on various Internet sites. The Globe, a supermarket tabloid, has run her photo, blacking out only the area around her eyes. Media new and old are making the alleged victim in this most public of sexual assault cases fair game, angering some who say the spotlight is making her a victim all over again and drawing criticism from others who favor full disclosure.

The Associated Press AP / John Moore An Iraqi prisoner clutches the bars of his cell in the Abu Ghraib prison on the outskirts of Baghdad Saturday. Baghdad, Iraq — No TV cameras or tape recorders will be allowed in the courtroom at next week’s court-martial of a U.S. soldier charged in the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal, a senior U.S. officer said today. Spc. Jeremy C. Sivits of Hyndman, Pa., a member of the Army’s 372nd Military Police Company, will face a military court in Baghdad on May 19 — less than a month after photos of prisoners being abused and humiliated were first broadcast April 28. The streamlined trial is expected to last just one or two days — including the sentencing phase, if Sivits is found guilty, said a U.S. military legal adviser who briefed reporters on condition of anonymity. The U.S. military normally allows family members, observers and print reporters to attend trials, Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt said at a briefing.

As our politicians and the press argue the merits of countless school reforms, it is our teachers who enter the classroom every day and fight the real fight: educating our children, one child at a time. The First Year shows the human side of this story: the determination and commitment of five novice teachers as they struggle to survive their first year in America's toughest schools. The companion Web site has forum postings, stories of the five first year teachers, and information about how to get certified.

Allowing the media to use cameras in court sometimes poses potential conflicts between the public's right to know and the administration of justice - and it is up to a judge to make the call, experts note. Candidates running for the seat of Judge William McGivern, who is seeking disability retirement, told the editorial board of the Marin Independent Journal this week that they respect the public's right of access to the courtroom - but some had reservations about privacy issues.

InFocus Features Analyst's Corner ... Telecom World WIRELESS REVIEW 04 Editorial Calendar The Convergence of convergence by David H. Yedwab TelephonyOnline.com, Feb 13 2004 Print-friendly format E-mail this information Convergence is an increasingly popular term being bandied about across our extended information, communications and networking industry. It is becoming ever more popular. It is now impossible to read an article or attend a presentation without the term "convergence" being on, if not at, center-stage. But like other words that become tech-trendy terms, I'm not sure I know anymore what is meant when someone gets on the stage and says "convergence." There are multiple technology, product and even industry convergences occurring at this same time. Let's call it the "Convergence of Convergence." When I first found myself questioning the many uses of the word "convergence," I was often able to figure out what heretofore separate things were being converged from the context of the statement or, maybe even better, by the organization the person was representing. Even that isn't true anymore.

Editorial: County to measure Laci trial in the millions Judge to rule on use of GPS to track Scott Cops' techniques of gathering data at issue By Jason Dearen, STAFF WRITER REDWOOD CITY After Laci Peterson went missing on Christmas Eve 2002, Scott Peterson's every move was tracked by Modesto police using devices planted on the borrowed and rented vehicles he drove between the time his wife disappeared and his arrest. At today's pre-trial hearing in the double-murder trial, Judge Alfred Delucchi will decide if data culled by Modesto police using global positioning systems, or GPS, is acceptable as evidence. His decision could set a new legal precedent in California. The GPS technology in question works by placing a transmitter on the vehicle of a subject under surveillance by authorities. The vehicle's whereabouts can be tracked by communication between the device and satellites in orbit around the Earth. The data received shows the address, date, time and map location of a moving car.

Thursday, 2 March, 2000, 16:38 GMT Rights law hits drugs trial
The trial was to be heard at Edinburgh Sheriff Court A drugs trial in Edinburgh has been postponed after a sheriff said undercover police could not give evidence behind screens. The ruling by Sheriff Richard Scott under human rights legislation is the latest upset to the Scots legal system since the European Convention on Human Rights was introduced in May. Sheriff Scott said he was minded to rule that officers could not give evidence incognito. The prosecution said that drugs squad officers would be at risk if they were identified and asked for the trial to be postponed to allow time for an appeal. I want to live in a country where human rights are enshrined in law, not in one where the government can override them. Justice Minister Jim Wallace The convention, which was incorporated into Scots law in the Human Rights Act, provides for the protection of certain basic human rights - including the right to a fair trial.
