Multicultural Education in the Elementary School
By Karen Krupnick
kkrupnic@cyberg8t.com
The United States has long been a melting pot of immigrants from all corners of the world, but the increasing number of new immigrants at the turn of this millennium makes multicultural education in our schools more necessary than ever. There is agreement that this education needs to begin as early as possible, putting an increased responsibility on teachers at the elementary school level. A 1998 School Enrollment Study by the U.S. Census Bureau revealed that 9.5 million elementary and high school students have at least one foreign-born parent, while 2.4 million of the students are themselves foreign born. In her study of Immigrant Students in United States Public Schools (2000), Judy Smith-Davis found that of the one million immigrants arriving each year, almost 80% are non-white, and 70% are from Latin America or Asia. Between 1991 and 1999, the number of language-minority school-aged children in this country rose from 8 million to 15 million, with 350 languages spoken at schools across the country. With this proportion of diversity, multiculturalism takes on new importance. For many minority students of the past, integration into the American system meant elimination of linguistic and cultural differences in favor of absorbing the dominant culture (

Around the World, Around the Web: Geography Sites on the Web
Greg Byerly and Carolyn S. Brodie
The world is constantly changing. While this has always been the case, the world as mapped and studied by geographers has really changed in the last ten years. Place names have changed, countries have been renamed, and atlases have become out-of-date almost overnight. Fortunately, the world-wide web has made it possible to dramatically expand library and classroom access to geography-related resources. What was once a dreary, dated, and dull duty to locate countries on a paper map can now be transformed into an exciting, educational, and entertaining experience.

Ph: (802) 388-3171; Fax: (802) 388-1590 Strengthening Your Child's Home Study Skills Success in school requires children to use good study skills. Effective studying requires many different skills. While many study skills are taught and monitored at school, success in school will require the use of these skills outside of school hours, for example, when completing homework and studying for tests. Parents can play an important role in helping their children develop good study habits and skills. The ideas described below are specific strategies and techniques parents can use to strengthen their children's home study skills. This handout focuses on three important aspects of effective studying: organization, study strategies, and motivation. Organization Study Environment Find a Good Study Place: One of the most basic habits you can teach your child is to study in one place. Help your child choose a particular location that she can use each time she studies. An effective workplace is one that has adequate space to spread out, is well lit, has the needed supplies close at hand (see list to right), and is relatively free from distractions. Limit Distractions: Observations and surveys of children and adolescents have shown that they frequently choose to study while listening to a radio or watching television. Should this practice be discouraged? Based on studies in this area, the answer appears to be "it depends."
