WHAT IS ENGLISH COUNTRY DANCING?
[This description is modified by Alan Winston from text written by Linda Repasky, who dances in Amherst, Massachusetts.] You say you've never heard of English Country Dancing? You're in good company, since many people are unfamiliar with it. But if you've watched Pride and Prejudice on tv, or seen Sense and Sensibility or Emma at the movies, you have indeed seen it. But fear not - English Country Dancing ( ECD) is not the obscure relic you might think it to be! While this traditional form of dance has been around for several hundred years, it's still thriving today. There is English Country Dancing all over the United States.
  • WHY DO PEOPLE LOVE ECD SO MUCH?
For many, it's the music - hauntingly beautiful tunes that make the heart swell. Some dance tunes are taken from old ballads and political satire; others come from classical music and operas. This gives ECD music tremendous variety; sometimes sweet and melodic, sometimes melancholy, and sometimes absolutely driven with a pulsating beat. All local dances feature live music, played by many of the area's most accomplished musicians. Others love ECD for the grace and elegance with which you glide as you dance. At times, you simply get swept away as you become one with the music. Many people love the beautiful patterns that you create as you dance and weave. Through it all, there's an indefinable quality to ECD that makes it energizing, mesmerizing, and just plain fun.
  • ECD IS NOT HARD TO LEARN.

Candidate Course Information
Welcome to the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, San Francisco Branch.
Scottish Country Dancing is the traditional ballroom dancing of Scotland. The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS), based in Edinburgh, was founded in 1923 to preserve this joyful social dance tradition. Since then Scottish Country Dancing has spread all over the world. Unlike Highland dances, which are usually solo performances accompanied by bagpipes, Country dances are danced with partners in sets of two or more couples doing an exciting variety of formations. The music, performed live at parties and some classes, is provided by a fiddle and piano, or by a whole band. Dance tempos vary from lively jigs, hornpipes and reels, to the elegant, slower strathspeys. Interested in trying Scottish Country Dancing? Come by yourself or with a friend. No partners are needed to attend classes or parties, and you need not be Scottish to enjoy the fun. Sessions for new beginners start every September in most locations and at other times in some cities. The cost is generally $5 or less per class. Please check out class schedules , browse our bookstore , or look over our events . Join us!

What is Contra Dance?
Contra dance is a traditional American dance. It is similar to square dance, derives from English Country dance and has been done in this country since the 1700's. We contra dance to live fiddle and string band music with featured callers in an atmosphere friendly to singles, couples, groups, and families. All dances are taught (walked-through) prior to dancing. We ask dancers to wear clean, soft soled shoes to protect the lovely sprung-wood dance floor. Comfortable clothes are also recommended. Dances generally start at 8 P.M., though we occasionally offer pre-dance workshops. A $5.00 donation is requested to fund the fees for the bands, callers and facility.

English Country Dancing
In Rochester, NY
Schedule Links Directions Country Dancers of Rochester sponsor regular monthly English dances with live music, usually on third Sundays, 7:30 - 10 pm, in the beautiful wood-floored Community Room of the Friends Meeting House , downtown at 84 Scio St., Rochester, NY. English Country Dance is fun, easy to learn, and good exercise! Popular in villages and courts in the 17th and 18th centuries, it is similar in many ways to its descendants: contra and square dance, but more graceful and elegant. Imagine dancing in a Jane Austen film! The emphasis is on patterns of movement rather than on elaborate footwork; most of the dances are done with a simple walking step. Learning is easy because dances are walked through and prompted. In no time at all, you can be gliding along to the simple, smooth flowing movements of English dance set to beautiful early classical music. No partner, special dress, or experience needed. Newcomers are always welcome come a few minutes early if you would like a quick introduction to English dance figures and style. Admission is $6 ($5 for CDR or CDSS members, $1 off for students or seniors). We always have live music and tempting refreshments at a mid-dance break. For more information (or to get on our e-mail announcement list), call Richard Sauvain at (585) 442-4681 or e-mail him.
