Issues and Recommendations
A report prepared in 1994 for the Presidents and Executive Directors of the American Mathematical Association of Two-year Colleges (AMATYC), the American Mathematical Society (AMS), the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).
Making A Commitment

Fulfilling the Commitment

A child's mind is a fire to be ignited, not a pot to be filled.
Experts agree: Excitement about learning mathematics is an important goal of school education. Dozens of reports have made hundreds of recommendations about how this goal might be achieved. Although many individuals and institutions have begun to implement these recommendations, their efforts have not yet had a significant nationwide impact on teacher education programs. This brief paper suggests ways to transform these individual projects into a national movement. It has been prepared at the request of the Presidents and Executive Directors of five major mathematics professional societies in order to articulate an agenda for these societies to help improve the mathematical preparation of elementary school teachers. It is intended:
  • to synthesize current issues within the ever-changing context of educational reform;

How can I support my child in math at home?
Help your child discover mathematics in everyday activities. Occurrences such as sporting events, grocery store visits, or stock market discussions provide an opportunity to apply mathematical concepts in a natural manner. When discussing mathematical concepts, stress the use of precise mathematical language. Encourage your child to communicate and explain their reasoning using mathematical language. Practice basic facts through games, drill, flash cards, multiplication charts, or with the computer. Stress organization in your child's academic schedule and work. Schedule time for homework. Make sure homework is in your child's binder and/or backpack when the work is completed. Help your child set personal goals. Help them identify areas where growth and improvement can occur, and assist him/her in creating strategic plans to meet the goals. Praise and recognize your child's achievements. Celebrate them like the big accomplishments they are.

    GROUPING
    The Seaford School District utilizes heterogeneous grouping for students. This process insures that each class has a mixture of developmental levels. Within the classrooms, teachers use whole and flexible group instruction to meet the learning needs of students. Team Rooms which use two or more teachers (special and regular education) are established at each grade level to meet the needs of all students in the regular classroom setting.
    SUBJECT AREAS
    As a practical way of meeting individual differences in children, there are a number of instructional levels offered in language arts and math at each grade level. Homogeneous grouping is used to address individual student reading instructional needs. During the day, students may move from one instructional area to another. Students receive instruction in math, science, language arts ( reading, spelling, writing, library skills, speaking, listening) , social studies, art, guidance, music, computer lab, and physical education. Textbooks, audiovisual materials, technology, and motivational supplements are used with both small and large group instruction.
