Clemson and Florida State Will Protect Their Marks by Dispatching Enforcement Teams in Clemson, SC Purchasing unlicensed apparel is detrimental, not only to the institution whose trademark is counterfeited, but also to consumers buying the merchandise. Oct. 30, 2001 Representatives from The Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC), in conjunction with local law enforcement officials, will be in search of counterfeit merchandise in Clemson, SC, on Saturday, November 3, when Clemson plays Florida State. Clemson and Florida State have teamed efforts with CLC, their exclusive licensing representative, to prevent thousands of dollars in lost revenue due to merchandise counterfeiters. When purchasing Clemson and Florida State merchandise consumers should always look for the following characteristics to ensure the merchandise they purchase is officially licensed:
  • All officially licensed merchandise should display the red and blue "Officially Licensed Collegiate Products" label somewhere on the product.
  • The merchandise should depict Clemson and Florida State logos and marks in a tasteful manner, as the Universities do not approve distasteful designs.

    Sale of Counterfeit Merchandise
TRENTON - Attorney General John J. Farmer, Jr. today announced the indictment of an Atlantic County husband and wife on charges related to the alleged sale of counterfeit designer clothing and other merchandise from their home. The Attorney General said that Phillip Marchiani, 53, and his wife Lillian Buonfiglio, 44, of Margate, are charged in a state grand jury indictment with one count each of conspiracy and one count each of distributing counterfeit goods. The merchandise allegedly included clothing, sunglasses, handbags, and other counterfeit items carrying famous brand-names or logos. According to Farmer, a three-week investigation in December 1999 revealed that Marchiani and Buonfiglio were allegedly displaying for sale, a variety of items bearing such famous-maker trademarks as Ralph Lauren, Adidas, Nike, Tommy Hilfiger, and Pokemon. The same items, in many cases, carried discrete markings identifying them as counterfeit. Division of Criminal Justice Director Paul H. Zoubek said the indictment outlines allegedly unlawful sales activity that took place at the couple's residence between Dec. 1 and Dec. 21 of 1999.

Representatives from the Collegiate Licensing Co., in conjunction with Oxford and campus law enforcement officials, will scout for counterfeit merchandise today when the Rebels host the visiting University of Memphis Tigers. Ole Miss and Memphis have teamed efforts with CLC, their exclusive licensing representative, to prevent thousands of dollars in lost revenue due to merchandise counterfeiters. "We haven't received specific complaints, but the university and our company decided it would be a good time to come in and patrol the area," said Jennifer Koshlap, university services coordinator for CLC. "There's been a lot of publicity surrounding Eli Manning and the team this year," said Koshlap, who will represent her company today in Oxford. "If your team is having a lot of on-field success, there's the tendency to have the counterfeiters come out. They go after the high-profile people."

HOUSTON Super Bowl merchandise is all over store shelves. A quick check can guarantee you don't pay for a fake of questionable quality. The proof is in the sticker. Every piece of official NFL merchandise will have a holographic sticker, along with a tracking number. "Even on the small items, it will have the logo there," said Curt Zupi, with CZ's Sports. Zupi runs CZ's Sports and said that the customer isn't the only one who has to be careful. Zupi said, he too, has to watch out for counterfeiters. One questionable merchant argued with him that no one really owns the name Super Bowl. "He told me his lawyers assured him they can't trademark the term 'Super Bowl.' I told him they have trademarked the term 'Super Bowl,'" Zupi said.

Phony Goods found Police last Wednesday (21st February) searched three stores of local retailers Reflections Discount Store and seized "several hundred counterfeit Tommy Hilfiger-barnded goods," Cayman Net News has learnt, from a press release circulated by Hunter and Hunter, local attorneys for Tommy Hilfiger Licensing, Inc. The announcement, the release said, was made by Tommy Hilfiger Licensing, Inc. ("Tommy Hilfiger"), of Wilmington, Delaware, USA, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tommy Hilfiger Corporation (NYSE:TOM). According to the release, "Tommy Hilfiger is the owner of the Tommy Hilifiger trademarks, including the well-known Flag logo, worldwide and has granted an exclusive right to American Sportswear SA of Panama to deal in apparel and accessories depicting the Tommy Hilfiger trademarks throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, including the Cayman Islands. Island Clothing, operated by Islands Companies Ltd., is the only authorized dealer of Tommy Hilfiger apparel in the Cayman Islands," the release further stated. "Tommy Hilfiger continues to be vigilant in its anti-counterfeiting enforcement actions and remains committed to maintaining the integrity of the brand. The sale of inferior counterfeit merchandise damages Tommy Hilfiger's reputation for the production of high quality merchandise and diminishes the value of the goodwill association with the Tommy Hilfiger trademark. Most importantly, the sale of counterfeit merchandise defrauds unsuspecting consumers and damages the sales by merchandise from authorised channels of distribution," it continued.
