DA DILLON ANNOUNCES ARRESTS IN SALE OF FAKE DESIGNER MERCHANDISE
Nassau County District Attorney Denis Dillon announced today that 14 people have been arrested and approximately $750,000 in merchandise seized as the result of an undercover investigation into the sale of counterfeit items purportedly made by top designers. "As we begin the holiday shopping season," Dillon said, "these arrests should put consumers on alert: you don't always get what you think you are paying for."
According to Dillon, "This investigation began in September of this year when a detective from the District Attorney's Squad of the Nassau County Police Department was approached about purchasing some quality fake Louis Vuitton merchandise. The detective contacted Louis Vuitton, and was put in touch with Abacus Investigations and Security, an authorized representative of Louis Vuitton and most top designers. Upon learning that Abacus Security had received other complaints about stores in Nassau County selling counterfeit merchandise, we opened an investigation.
Dillon also expressed his thanks to the Nassau County Police Department's Crimes Against Property squad for its assistance in the investigation.

Alleged counterfeit goods seized by state
By Cy Ryan
cy@lasvegassun.com

SUN CAPITAL BUREAU CARSON CITY The state attorney general's office said Thursday it seized records and goods from four Hot Cats clothing stores three of them in Las Vegas suspected of selling counterfeit merchandise with name brands. Deputy Attorney General Tracey Brierly said authorities found heat presses where counterfeit names were printed on such things as T-shirts, tank tops and sweatshirts. "Selling counterfeit merchandise undermines a fundamental tenet of the marketplace: owners of intellectual and trademark property have the right to expect that sanctions will be taken if their property is stolen by imitators," Brierly said. The merchandise bore brand names such as Spitfire, Von Dutch, Jack Daniels, Playboy, Hustler, Fox Racing, and Roxy/Quicksilver. Kenneth "Kip" Johnson, co-owner of the stores, refused to comment and referred inquiries to his lawyer Scott Freeman, who could not be reached for comment. The three Southern Nevada stores are at the Galleria mall in Henderson and at the Fashion Show and Meadows malls in Las Vegas. The remaining store targeted by the seizure is in Reno.

NFL gets OK to seize bogus Super Bowl items
    By Michael Kinsman
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER January 23, 2003 The National Football League marched out of court yesterday with an order giving it the power to seize counterfeit Super Bowl merchandise that may be offered for sale in San Diego County during the NFL's premier event. Superior Court Judge Charles Wickersham signed the order giving the NFL the authority to immediately confiscate any bogus goods it may find, whether they are sold at retail establishments or on street corners by individuals. The order is effective from noon today through midnight Monday. NFL merchandising is a highly lucrative business. An estimated $2.9 billion in NFL-licensed merchandise is sold each year, with sales of Super Bowl merchandise expected to be about $100 million this year, Guibault said. Merchandise includes such items as $17 Super Bowl T-shirts, $24 hats, $65 replica jerseys and $325 leather jackets. Guibault said the NFL seized 2,000 counterfeit Super Bowl hats and 600 T-shirts Tuesday in the Los Angeles garment district. She said counterfeit merchandise has been seen at a National City liquor store, although the NFL has yet to seize that.
