Astronomy, climatology, geology, meteorology and volcanology are examples of disciplines for which observatories have been constructed. Historically, observatories have been as simple as containing a sextant (for measuring the distance between stars) to as complex as Stonehenge (for measuring the seasons through the position of the sun's rising and setting). Modern day observatories typically contain one or more permanently mounted telescopes contained in buildings with a rotating or removeable dome. Within the last twenty years, many space-based observatories have been launched, introducing a new use of the term.

The U.S. and Cote dIvoire maintain an active cultural exchange program, through which prominent Ivoirian Government officials, media representatives, educators, and scholars visit the U.S. to become better acquainted with the American people and to exchange ideas and views with their American colleagues. This cooperative effort is furthered through frequent visits to Cote dIvoire by representatives of U.S. business and educational institutions, and by visits of Fulbright-Hays scholars and specialists in various fields. A new U.S. Embassy chancery compound is scheduled for completion in 2005.

Its bordering neighbours are Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Liberia and Guinea. The total area of Côte d'Ivoire is 322,460 sq km, including some 4,460 sq km of water. It has a relatively flat elevation averaging 500m, made up of green plateau in the north and the plains in the south. In the Man region of Côte d'Ivoire the elevation rises to 1,300m, and in the Nimba Mountains, steep granite peaks dominate the landscape. In the south one can find vast forest lands filled with wildlife and exceptionally high trees. Sadly though, the woodland may disappear altogether as logging demands the demolition of more and more forests. The coastline is home to many tidal lagoons that are occasionally dissected by the estuaries of rivers that flow out into the Gulf of Guinea. The three most important rivers are the Sassandra, Banbandam and Comoe. The population stands at 16,804,784, with an average of 42 inhabitants per square kilometre. The people are a colourful representation of an African nation's fight to hold on to traditional culture. Traditional handicrafts can be found in any market place and include very colourful masked statuettes, unique to Côte d'Ivoire. Although Côte d'Ivoire was once penetrated by the Portuguese, it was the French that colonized Côte d'Ivoire, hence the name. In 1960, the Ivory Coast finally gained a peaceful independence from France. The currency is still the CFA Franc, the official language French and the largest trading partner is France.
