Program Brainstorming Introduction
  • This weblog is a place where you can give us your suggestions for Noreascon 4 programming. What great new ideas do you have and what things have you seen at other conventions that you'd like us to "steal"? (Remember, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.) To make a suggestion, please add a comment under the appropriate heading. Feel free to write a short description of the topic and even suggest appropriate program participants for it. If there's a lot of interest in a particular topic, we'll add a new heading for it. Please note: This is not the place to volunteer to be on Program. Ladies' and Gentlmen's Evening Dress
for the Ragtime Era: 1910-1920
Dressing a Lady for a Ragtime Ball
Fashionable gown styles varied from year to year during the 1910's. For consistency's sake, the styles chosen by The Commonwealth Vintage Dancers for their performing gowns are those typical for the years 1913 to 1914. When designing a gown to be worn at any of our social balls please don't feel obligated to follow this narrow range; styles from the entire decade are equally appropriate, as are modern gowns which are evocative of the period rather than strict reproductions. We want our ball patrons to come and enjoy the evening, and partake in elaborate costuming if they wish but it is certainly not required. Evening Gowns of the 1910's
Ladies' evening dress of this era often consist of a high- waisted gown (though the waist placement varys somewhat from high to natural to low waisted styles throughout the decade), usually in soft fabric such as chiffon or lightweight satin, often ornamented with elaborate lace, silk brocades or beadwork and draped asymmetrically. The long skirt should have enough fullness for dancing. Skirts often would be made in many layers with elaborately draped overskirts in lightweight materials in various types of silk or lace. Skirts are usually draped in such a way that the rather full skirt falls in a fairly narrow silhouette but because of the nature of the draping great freedom of movement is possible. Colors can be pastels or jewel tones, with contrasting, striking color combinations as well as subtle tone on tone combinations.

Costuming for 1906 Susan Cohen provided the following quick and dirty costuming hints for Golden Aeon , which was set in 1899. Hope this will be helpful! Although some things will have changed by 1906, most is essentially the same. If you played or Titanic , chances are you have costuming that would be appropriate to the Tea. Susan says:
Okay. Here is a basic, general costuming guide. Players are strongly encouraged to interpret these guidelines for their own characters!!!
    Women:
Hair is pulled up on top the head into a bun, if at all possible. When my hair was shorter, I stuffed it into a knitted snood.
Shoes: fairly low heeled granny-boots for day, court-heeled shoes for evening (if you can get them - if not, plain pumps are just fine!)
    Men:
If you have facial hair, terrific! Mustaches were best, especially for the dashing young gents, but plenty of older, more substantial men wore beards. (If your hair is long, other gamers will ignore it - just act natural!)
Conservative suits are always okay. And, if you can afford to mess with it a little, do this: cut an unobtrusive button off your cuffs, iron up
If any player is lucky enough to have either tails or a morning coat, it is better to wear these items at any time than go without. But the correct time is, of course, morning coats in the morning (before lunch) and tailcoats after 6 p.m. If you do not have anything

"Having not done the other two (Anne mini-series) was my biggest challenge," admits Costume Designer Ruth Secord.
Sullivan's signature attention to detail and accuracy pushed Secord's team into one of their most gratifying challenges. In just eight weeks, Secord and her team of cutters, tailors, and milliners researched, found and created authentic period costumes for 85 cast members and 3,000 background players.

171. The Costumes: Ngila Dickson
Melinda Williams profiles the designer in her extensive interview about the creative process involved in the costuming for The Lord of the Rings series.
http://lilithlotr.ejwsites.net/articles/pavement/ngila.htm
The Costumes: Ngila Dickson She once ran her own fashion magazine and dressed Hercules and Xena. Now Auckland costume designer Ngila Dickson has spent 18 months leading a 35-strong team in creating 15,000 garments for thousands of actors and extras in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Story: Melinda Williams Within moments of arriving at the Auckland home of Ngila Dickson, costume designer for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, I somehow get a splinter in my writing hand from the wooden table in her back yard. Inconvenient and slightly embarrassing as it is, I tell myself that of all the places to get a splinter, this has to be one of the more convenient ones. After all, there's probably nobody more likely to have a pincushion on hand than a costume designer. However, when I ask to borrow a needle to remove the shard of wood, Dickson looks concerned. "Oh dear," she says. "I'm not sure I have one." A few minutes and a careful search later, her suspicion is confirmed. After spending 18 months leading a team of 35 costume makers in creating 15,000 garments, Dickson doesn't have a single pin or needle in her Ponsonby house. Then again, after living, breathing and dreaming

172. Costume Showcase Pleases With Melding Of Drag, 'Australiana'

Costume showcase pleases with melding of drag, 'Australiana'
Tracey Compton

Contributing Writer A sold-out crowd at Meany Theater got a rare treat this past Friday, as Seattle drag queens showcased costumes from the movie "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert." Lizzy Gardiner and Tim Chappel, the Academy Award-winning Australian designers, spent the evening revealing the hidden truths behind their extravagant costumes. The design of the costumes, according to Gardiner and Chappel, was rooted in a combination of the budget constraints of the film, a tribute to Australiana, and the "'70s disco trash" with which they grew up. "When you've got a lot of money, you just tend to buy nice-looking materials and make it look beautiful," explained Chappel. "But, if you don't have any money, you have to think about cheap materials that are effective. I love those costumes we made out of things like room deodorizers, like floral room deodorizers or chicken/rodent wire or duct tape." Something closer to home was the thought behind the thong dress worn by Hugo Weaving in the movie.

173. Gormenghast | Behind The Scenes | Costume Design
The designer and producer, Estelle Daniel, supply the rationale and significance of the costuming choices for textiles and decoration. Flash gallery included.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/gormenghast/scenes/costumes.html
The trick in designing the costumes and the whole 'world' of Gormenghast was to draw together dozens of elements and inspirations into a look which can be recognised as itself and nowhere else... This task fell to costume designer Odile Dicks-Mireaux, an experienced designer for film and television who nevertheless, was new to creating a world of costume, rather than re-creating one as she has done frequently for period drama.
Odile Dicks-Mireaux, costume designer:
I tried to find a logic in my head of how to evolve the design. It's a very personal logic. I designed my own way of approaching it: the royals of Gormenghast would have had a ceremonial costume that would have been inherited through the ages. People sometimes get out old costumes and relics from dusty cupboards and wear them to celebrations or in religious ceremonies. I started with that premise. It had to be quite grand.
Estelle Daniel, producer:
The costumes would be crucial in defining the feel of Gormenghast a place that is recognisable while not being identifiable with any particular place or time somewhere else, but full of people with real human thoughts and feelings. Among the alternative titles which Mervyn Peake had for the Trilogy was 'Passions and Shadows.' We needed to bring the clothes out of the shadows for the passions to have full play on the canvas of Gormenghast

Welcome to LOTR Costume. We hope you enjoy our research project on the Lord of the Rings costumes. When we first saw Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, we were amazed by what we saw on the screen. He and his crew have created one of the most complete screen universes of all times recreating the story of a quest to destroy The One Ring. We're here to study everything about the costumes from fabric to patterns to metalworking. We look at every thing from elvish costume to hobbit costumes. The LOTR costumes are just too fantastic not to research! Note this is a Costume Research site not a Fan web. As such we do things a bit differently. Check our FAQ if you have questions.
