82. Salon De La Rose | LARP Costuming Resources
LARP costuming need not be elaborate (although that s certainly fun!). Simple props and accessories can be evocative of a mood, theme, concept, or profession.
http://www.toreadors.com/tor/fashion/resources.html
How to get your LARPing outfit together Vampires in the World of Darkness come in all shapes and sizes and take all manner of appearances (sometimes literally, as with those who Obfuscate!). In live-action Vampire games, the careful choice of garments can go a long way towards making a character come to life. The old adage about the clothes making the man does have some truth in it. People act and carry themselves differently when they are dressed in formal suits than they do in ripped jeans and leather jackets try it and you'll feel it immediately. A well-planned outfit and appropriate props can also help show important character traits. A wealthy character might wear flashy jewels, while an intellectual character might carry a book bag. You can also use costume as a form of subterfuge. For example, if your character is a conniver at heart, she might change her outfits to fit in with different groups and better use them to her advantage. Or a very clever character might dress in a childlike fashion to distract others from her intelligence. LARP costuming need not be elaborate (although that's certainly fun!). Simple props and accessories can be evocative of a mood, theme, concept, or profession. All it takes is one interesting item to signify something important about your character. A briefcase may show that you're a serious Ventrue, or a vintage cocktail hat could mean that you're a sophisticated Toreador party maven. A Gangrel could carry a backpack covered in Sierra Club buttons, while a spiked belt says you're a Brujah with attitude. Of course, these are the typical stereotypes, but I just wanted to explain how one simple accessory could show others something about your character.

Chroma and Value and Hue, Oh My
At CostumeCon Thirteen, in Toronto, one of the contributors was Gypsy Ames who, in addition to showing up with some very nice costumes, presented a panel on color. I attended and thought that she had a lot of very good information in a reasonably compact form. Time went fast and Gypsy didn't get through all her notes so I asked her for a copy. She sent them to me a few weeks later and I thought that I might be able to put them in narrative form that might benefit some people. What follows is my interpretation of Gypsy's notes.
Color in Costume and On Stage
by Gypsy Ames (as mangled by Duane Elms)
Because of these associations and responses, color can be used in design to evoke responses from an audience or communicate obvious information. The villain wears black and a black hat. A woman in a red dress is loose or an adulteress. More subtle communications can be achieved by touches of color in accessories or trims. Often, the correct color for a character or situation will be chosen without conscious thought. You can examine works of art for new ways of using color or for ideas about developing your color palettes. The human eye can perceive about 150 different colors and about 200 graduations of value within those colors. This means that the average person can distinguish about 30,000 different shades and tints. For ease of grouping colors into color schemes, we arrange them around a wheel. This also helps show what colors can be mixed and the results of the mixing. There are three basic colors on the wheel. These are the primary colors;

85. Susan Reed: Historical Costuming -- It's Not Who You Are, It's What You Wear
University of Maryland. When I started the program, I was confident about my knowledge of costuming and research. Well, there’s
http://patriot.net/~nachtanz/SReed/histcost.html
One way to approach a culture is through its clothing. Often its concepts of what is appropriate to gender roles, race, religions, ethnicity, occupations, socio-economic status, and such are embedded in its range of acceptable clothing. By examining what people wore under what circumstances, we can start to understand underlying social and cultural structures. At the same time we can appreciate the range of personal expression with a society. Meanwhile in the SCA, I work to promote better research methods through classes and articles. The artifacts we reproduce/recreate can be an exciting starting point from which to research the lives and times of those who would have made or used those artifacts in period.

This is a costume research site - and some sections of the site are better developed than others. This is partly because some costumes are more popular than others. Padme and Jedi costumes are very popular - but there are a ton of other Star Wars costumes that need writeups! This is far too daunting a task for one person. If you would like to help out and research a particular costume, please do so. I'd be happy to post the information. Thanks to all of you who have contributed to the site so far! Kat sent this new Padme doll - she's great - thanks for sending her! Ok - I'm back. Here is the Hyperspace link to the new costume webdoc. If you don't have Hyperspace, never fear, they eventually de-Hyperspace these, though smaller versions of them. I will post when I find a non-Hyperspace version. I have yet to watch it - but as soon as I do, I will post a report. I may wait a few days before posting any screenshots, to give them a chance to spread elsewhere on the net - it'll be safer that way. Here is the non-Hyperspace teaser image: I'm at my parent's house this weekend with a slow internet connection, so I haven't yet seen the new Hyperspace webdoc on costumes. I've heard it's quite good though. If you have screenshots
