The are much more complete lists of links out there, but I decided to keep this short and just feature some of my very favorite internet haunts. I am quite a visual person by nature and love sites with lots of good pictures, so if you know any other places to see nice, authentic Renaissance or Elizabethan clothing, I'd love for you to send me an email so I could add it to this page! Also, check out the Research page for links to original source costume images from the 16th century. And finally, you can check out the list of links specifically for costume diaries on my What's New Page (scroll down a bit) or in the archive of older diaries
Historical Costumers
  • Mode Historique (formerly known as "Elizabethen Lady") This fabulous site by my costume buddy, Sarah Lorraine, recently got a bit of remodeling and another new home. And be sure to check out her dress diaries... Sarah's diaries are absolutely wonderful!
  • Sempstress Totally drool-worthy Elizabethan gowns and some quite amusing articles by another one of my favorite online friends, Melissa Heischberg. Home of the very cool "Dial-a-Dress" tool and a bunch of fantastic diaries.
  • Lady Drea's Wardrobe Unlock'd Drea Leed's historical clothing is really in a class by itself, and the research that accompanies each garment provides an amazing wealth of information and inspiration for other costumers.

WELCOME TO ELIZABETHAN ENGLAND! When you enter the gates of the Renaissance Faire, the world of 16th century England awaits. It is the "Golden Age," the English Renaissance, the time of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth Tudor, who reigned from 1558 to 1603. To escape the heat and stench of London in the summer, the Queen would often travel to the countryside and visit various towns and the estates of her nobility. Most of her court would travel with her, many of those in her government, and others looking for favor from the Queen. Add a full complement of servants for each high-born traveler and the numbers would often swell into the hundreds. At each stop, the hosting noble or town official would be expected to welcome the Queen with much pomp and circumstance, producing elaborate presentations, plays, masques and the like, for the Queen's enjoyment. It is one of these "progresses" that brings Queen Elizabeth to the Renaissance Faire. We do not portray a particular year for the Queen's visit, but roughly the period from the 1560's until just before the Spanish Armada in 1588. We are "a chapter, not a page" out of Elizabethan history.

    http://www.skaro.com/costume.html
Costuming Tips For The Cheap And Desperate Introduction You've got an event coming up - probably a live-action roleplaying game, if you're here - and you need to throw together a costume. Costuming can make or break a game - as proper attire helps players get into character and can help evoke the proper mood for a game. Those mysterious cultists look a lot more threatening when they are in dark robes, rather than jeans and tee-shirts. You can create evocative costumes, even on a tight budget, and your game will benefit by it. This is my own collection of tips and suggestions, accumulated over many years of LARPing and a general love of dressing up on a small budget. This document is divided into two sections - tips for those who can sew and have access to a sewing machine and a section for those who don't. I suggest that you read the entire document, and pick and choose what suits your needs. Johanna Tips For Everyone
    • Allow yourself plenty of time to assemble your costume. I like to have at least two week's notice of an event, and I prefer at least a month. That gives me time to pick and choose what I want, and wait for fabric sales - which seem to happen every other weekend.

    Belly Dance Costuming:
    A Basic Beginner's Costume
    by Shira
This article will introduce you to some basic elements used in belly dance costuming. You can make your own items, or purchase them from various vendors. If you are inclined to make your own costumes, see Belly Dance Costume Patterns elsewhere on this web site for information about three pattern companies who make patterns suitable for belly dancing costumes. Beginning students often aren't ready to commit a large amount of money to a fully beaded, sequinned outfit. This basic beginner's costume is suitable for wearing to class, "getting in the mood" to practice at home, or performing in student recitals, community events, and other amateur performances, but doesn't require huge amounts of fabric, time, or cash.
    Overview
This costume design is not suitable for historical re-enactment venues, such as the Society For Creative Anachronism (SCA) and Renaissance Faires. Of the pieces shown here, only the pantaloons are likely candidates to be incorporated into such a costumethe midriff-baring blouse and sequinned hipband certainly are not! The basic elements shown here consist of: A Midriff-Baring Blouse B Stretch-Sequin Hip Belt C Pantaloons You can give this costume a folkloric (but not authentic) look by making it out of natural fibers. Accessorize it if you like with ethnic-looking jewelry and/or a coin belt worn over the hip scarf.

Any garment that comes to the knee and fastens is a Knicker. Knickers and Knickerbockers were worn by our ancestors. There have been many names for a knicker over the years. Knickers, Knickerbockers, Joppers, Plus Two, Plus Four, Plus Six, etc. In 1923 the war to end all wars was over and the Roaring 20s exploded along with the birth of complete flamboyance. These were the days of the Plus Fours, Argyle Socks, Silk Tie and Shirt, the Gatsby look, Flapper Girls, Swooping Fendered Cars, Panama Hats, Ski Knickers and the complete Plus Four Suits. The "Plus Four" remained very prominent in high fashion until the stock market crash of 1929. This time period made it too expensive and impractical to continue the argyle sock. The trend now was to a solid sock and eventually the demise of the "Plus Four" with the birth of the first walking short in about 1933.

    By Randall Whitlock.
    http://www.casfs.org/connote/columns/costuming101/6_2/
    By Randall Whitlock
I generally make cowls in three pieces. The first is a circular shoulder cape cut wider than your shoulders, say 24 inches in diameter. A circular neck opening (just big enough to get your head through) is cut in the shoulder cape, tangent to the center.
The other two pieces are the sides of the hood. The basic shape is an irregular pentagon with an S-curved base. The length of the curved base equals half the circumference of the neck opening. Sew the two side pieces together along the top and back.
The straight remaining side is the face opening. Finish the face opening and the outer edge of the shoulder cape by forming rolled hems or by applying trim. The curved base of the hood is sewn to the neck opening so that the face opening of the hood is directed toward the shorter side (front) of the shoulder cape. The longer portion of the shoulder cape hangs down your back.
The side pieces can also be extended to form a liripipe, which is the long tail that hangs down the back in some 14th Century styles.
Randall Whitlock is the proprietor of MoiRandall's , and is active in the The Southwest Costumers Guild The latest edition of this column can be found at http://www.casfs.org/connote/costuming101.html

costuming!! I would say that costuming takes a great deal of knowledge of textiles, history, math, and engineering. Yes, that s right, math and engineering.
    http://www.glove.org/costume/index.asp
Welcome to a hobby of mine , we all have them, some are more expensive than others and you really need a HUGE budget for this one! Costuming!! I have one room in our home dedicated to this hobby. I would say that costuming takes a great deal of knowledge of textiles, history, math, and engineering. Yes, that's right, math and engineering. If you do not know how to plot a curve or calculate the amount of square inches you will need for a pattern you will need to learn fast. You will purchase fabric by the yard but you will have to know how to lay out your pattern on it to be able to use the maximum amount of your yardage. Sure if you buy a commercial pattern it shows you how to lay it out and how much fabric at what width to purchase. But if you are like most costumers you will graduate to making your own patterns and with that comes the knowledge of how much fabric and trims you really need to buy. It will be second nature in no time to you and it is all math! So if you were bad at math in school it was because they did not use fabric and pattern making as an example to help you learn.
