What is Cosplay? Cosplay is a Japanese fan term for Costume Play; it's equivalent to the Western fan term Masquerade. In Japan cosplay covers pretty much the spread that convention masquerades in the West cover, from SF to fantasy, from medieval to military uniforms. It's basically a time for fans to dress up in their favourite garb or as their favourite character and have a bit of fun. There is a condition though; most fans insist that you not only play the character in dress, you also play the character's nature. In other words, whilst you're in costume, you must be the character, in thoughts, words and action. Western cosplay has a slightly different meaning. In the US and in Europe cosplay is solely restricted to the costuming of Japanese characters, from anime, manga and gaming. The term is used by anime fans to distinguish it from other types of masquerade, much in the way that the word otaku is used by anime fans to describe themselves, whilst in Japan it covers all kind of obsessive fandom. In addition, Western cosplayers aren't required to act their characters, at least not to the degree their Japanese cousins do. It's enough to dress up, or to go on stage and do a humourous skit. In this way cosplay masquerades are much like other Western masquerades. There is a movement though, coming from the US East Coast cons, that promotes the idea that convention masquerades should closely match the codes of conduct fostered by Japanese cosplay masquerades. Whether this thought prevails will be due to the conventions and the costumers- it will be interesting to see what happens over the next few years.

lothing during the reign of Elizabeth always reflected the social status of the wearer. There would be no doubt in ones mind about picking out the nobility in any given crowd. Clothing was a direct indication of wealth, much in the manner of imported suits in the present. The cost of clothing was related to the type of fabric and (in the days before synthetic dyes) the color. Purple dye was extracted by crushing thousands of tiny sea snails; similarly, crimson dye was obtained by crushing a certain type of beetle. Processed fabrics such as velvet or corduroy were costly, as were satins and other fine weaves. Cotton, although common in this day and age, was expensive and uncommon before the rise of the cotton gin. Harvested cotton was cleaned by hand, a lengthy and laborious process. Cotton was imported from India or the Americas with an associated high cost before taxation. Cotton was an expensive fabric up til the 1800s. Flax and wool were the more common fibres. Flax (a plant called flax) is made into linen, which while expensive now, wasn't when it was homespun. Wool yarn became wool fabric of all weights, including tweed which was woven wool fabric that had been beaten on one side while wet to form a wooly, wind-proof material.

A good source for costuming information is the SCA, Society of Creative Anachronism. The avowed purpose of the SCA is the study and recreation of the European Middle Ages, its crafts, sciences, arts, traditions, literature, etc. The SCA "period" is defined to be 600 AD to 1600 AD, concentrating on the Western European High Middle Ages. You can find SCA members in the newsgroup rec.org.sca. If you post there, be sure to mention your city and state so that those who respond can suggest local SCA groups and sources. I believe that SCA has several phamplets or publications specifically on costuming (aka "garb"). If you wish to contact the SCA national headquarters you can write to: The Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. Office of the Registry P.O. Box 360743 Milpitas, CA 95036-0743 Be sure to check the list of sources and references in the regular alt.sewing and rec.crafts.textiles FAQ. A number are appropriate for costuming.

Well... it's no lie that we haven't updated since December of 2002. Obviously, this place is sorely in need of an update. But, as we tend to do at least once a year, we've decided to close for renovations. The Ball will be better than ever once we reopen, and look for it to be hosted by a few new cats, as well! We should be open again in a couple of weeks, so come back soon!
Update - 25 Jul - The update is delayed. Zi's run into a major snag in the process, which is setting us back *weeks*. The new reopening date is mid- to late-August. No more delays, we promise.
Update - 12 Sep - Okay, we lied. More delays. I don't know when we'll be reopening, but let's get one thing straight: The more you people bitch to me about it, the less likely it is we'll be reopening at all. I'm tired of people selfishly demanding that I update, as you have no idea just what it is I'm going through. Since this renovation began, I've had to deal with theft, insults, unreasonable demands, and even THREATS to reopen, and I'm damn sick of it. That's just on the computer; I *do* have a life outside of this site, people, and in *that* I've had to deal with being thrown out of my house twice, getting accepted-then-denied to college, my dad dying, parasite infestations, moving out to my own house, and one hell of a messy breakup with my girlfriend. To tell the truth, this site is *not* number one on my priority list. IF we come back, we'll be better than ever. But learn patience. Until then, we've got a new e-mail address, listed below.

    http://www.ibexa.com/hip/
by Dawn Devine Brown and Barry Brown Costuming from the Hip is a comprehensive reference for anyone who works with Middle Eastern dance costumes. Dancers will like the costume design ideas, information on accessories, and plentiful hints for achieving the best fit from their costumes, whether they came from an existing collection, were purchased off the rack, or were custom-made by a designer. Costume makers will enjoy the dozens of included garment patterns, construction and fitting techniques, and instructions for flattering different body types. And historical re-enactors will like the extensive bibliography, costuming facts, and patterns for historical costumes with instructions for developing them to fit their own body. With over two hundred original illustrations, this 120-page book will step you though researching Middle Eastern designs for costumes, creating the pattern, constructing the garment, and accessorizing. Along with its bibliography for further study, the book contains a list of vendors that specialize in Middle Eastern dancewear. There is also a section on men's costumes which answers many of the questions raised by costume makers frustrated with the lack of information on this subject. The first edition of Costuming from the Hip sold out nationwide within weeks of its introduction and is no longer available. The new, revised edition is 50% longer and contains dozens of new illustrations and patterns.
