In many countries the third generation is now coming to maturity, and it is this third generation that is now exploring the possibilities of the past. At the Archive it is this new generation that makes up the bulk of our public enquiries, requesting information and images of their family's village and traditional costume. Enquiries come from all over the world but it is the Australian situation that we are most familiar with. Hanbok - Korean Dress
A walk down almost any street in Korea will reveal that today's Korean wardrobe ranges from jeans and casual fashions to tailored suits and chic designer creations. However, of all the outfits one is likely to see, the most striking is without a doubt the hanbok, the traditional costume worn by Koreans of all ages, particularly on traditional holidays and when attending social affairs with a traditional Korean theme.
The hanbok is characterized by its simple lines and the fact that it has no pockets. The women's hanbok comprises a wrap-around skirt and a bolero-like jacket. It is often called chima-jeogori, chima being the Korean word for skirt and jeogori the word for jacket. The men's hanbok consists of a short jacket and pants, called baji, that are roomy and bound at the ankles. Both ensembles may be topped by a long coat of a similar cut called durumagi.
The traditional-style hanbok worn today are patterned after the ones worn during the Confucian-oriented Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). Yangban, a hereditary aristocratic class based on scholarship and official position rather than on wealth, wore brightly colored hanbok of plain and patterned silk in cold weather and of closely woven ramie cloth or other high-grade, light-weight materials in warm weather. Commoners, on the other hand, were restricted by law as well as finances to bleached hemp and cotton and could only wear white and sometimes pale pink, light green, gray and charcoal.

Thirty-five textile works by Washington artists are included. Ka Ly and Mao Moua Ly, Spokane, demonstrate Hmong needlework through visually stimulating designs that combine vibrant complementary colors in geometric patterns emphasizing optical motion and dynamic works in fabric. Working in the African-American quilt tradition, Seattle artists Marita Dingus, Almerphy Frank-Brown, Iris Franklin, Gwen Maxwell-Williams and Brenetta Ward present a vast diversity of quilting technique and cultural influence. Some follow the quilting tradition of recycled materials, derived from an earlier necessity. Others follow an inner expression that gives pleasure through design and color. Marie Bakke Bremner, Republic, learned needlework at the age of five from her Norwegian immigrant mother. Bremmer continues the Norwegian tradition of Hardanger stitching and quilt design.

Khaleej Times, Dubai - 10th February 2003 Poetry in motion
Arguably the most enduring fashion designer that India has seen,
Ritu Kumar's mission was to revive the rich Indian tradition of textiles and handicrafts
Each item was handmade and unique. What was truly delightful was that the designer retained the edge of Indian exotica, something she is renowned for. There was a broad range of styles, from the extravagantly decorative to the relativity toned-down-making the magnificent dresses even more tempting for the lucky enough to afford them. Skinny jeans fought for attention with slinky saris and lavish lehngas. On the extreme were the exuberant antique pieces and on the other were contemporary designs. But there was no conflict. It all stood in perfect harmony. Ritu Kumar's on the way Indian women dress today has been tremendous. She gave Indian fashion a direction and an identity. Stylish women like the late Princess Diana and Jemima Khan, have been raiding her fashion shows for ideas that are unique and timeless. She's been teaching Indian women to dress for the age of emancipation and beyond, bringing about a revival of the rich Indian textiles and crafts. In the late sixties Indian women began to discover the new freedom of the work-place. Hand embroidery began to lose out to machine embroidery as nylons replaced cottons and silks.

Costumes and Textiles of Hilltribes
VISITOR TO the North of Thailand are often struck by the beauty of the often elaborate costumes of the minority hilltribes but, perhaps, confused on which style of costume belongs to which group. While generalizations can be made, they are only that any particular hilltribe may have several ethnic subdivisions with differing customs and traditional costumes. Also, the style of costumes may change for women before and after marriage, as with the Karen, and women may have especially splendid finery for special occasions like the lunar new year celebrations, such as the Hmong and Akha. But with a bit of observation, the visitor to the North will be able to differentiate the different hilltribe people encountered on a trek or a visit to the mountainous country around Chiangmai or Chiangrai according to the style of dress and ornamentation the people are wearing.
The Karen
Karen women weave particularly fine textiles. While the mode of decoration varies from subgroup to subgroup, clothing is usually made from two strips of handwoven cloth which are folded and stitched up the middle of the front and back of the garment with the incomplete stitching at the top forming a v-neck. The stitching is not hidden, but done with colorful thread and some embroidery becomes part of the decoration of the garment itself.

of the creative spirit of the Macedonian people
The traditional folk costumes embrace traits of the various cultures represented in this part of the Balkan. They convey the skill and inventiveness of native designers - Macedonian women, who manufactured themselves their outfits of homespun thread (usually wool, linen, cotton, hemp), using traditional tools. Until the early decades of the 20th century, when folk costumes reached their peak and were still widely worn and adorned, there were over 70 different kinds of richly decorated costumes on the territory of Macedonia. Every region had its distinctive attire, which differed from the clothing of the adjacent region in its stylistic, aesthetic and functional features. The reason for the appearance of so many different costumes, particularly for women, is the geographic isolation of the ethic areas, as well as frequent migrations and ethnic diversity of the population. The features that make traditional costumes magnificent are the embroidery (in rich geometric and geometricized floral patterns), appliqués, woven ornaments, adornment with fringes, fine metal thread - srma, and braids, as well as jewelry, made of metal, beads and fruits of the nature.

Lisa Ho: costumes for the 2000 Olympic Games Opening ceremony
Lisa Ho is one of Australia's most popular fashion designers and manufacturers, best known for her beaded evening wear, comfortably cut jeans and more recently glamorous swimwear. With a family background in tailoring and sewing, Lisa Ho knew at an early age that she wanted to create clothing. She studied dress design at East Sydney Technical College and established her eponymous label soon after graduation. Lisa Ho was one of four fashion and costume designers approached to create original costumes for the Arrivals segment of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games opening ceremony. The designers were asked to express the rich cultural heritage that migrants from around the world have brought to Australia. Lisa Ho was given the Asia region and sought through her designs to explore the rich costume and textile traditions of the diversity of cultures in this area. Rather than taking the styles literally she has transformed them into a very evocative but contemporary manifestation.

for Fashion Dolls
I have great pleasure in presenting you with my Fashion costume for Doll collectors. If you collect the "Dolls of the World " series, this costume will appeal to you. It has won a " Blue Ribbon " in a July 1999 USA competition. It has been featured in an August 1998 article in the popular Barbie doll collectors magazine Barbie Bazaar " . It is unique, and ethnic - an authentic likness of the Traditional Maori Costume. The costume is carefully created and produced here in New Zealand, and available for collectors all over the World direct from this site. The costume consists of a close fitting bodice overlaid in traditional design braid. The grass skirt is made from genuine flax grasses with a red fabric underskirt and braiding waistband.
The feather cloak is amazing. It is really beautiful. No two are alike. It is made from feathers laid by hand in a intricate pattern on a hessian backing with a braid tie. If you have a preference for lighter or darker feathering, please specify.
Accessories are a headband, an imitation "greenstone" tiki necklace, and poi- flax balls used in traditional action songs. The costume comes to you beautifully displayed and packaged .

Kroje (Folk Costumes)Links to the Past “Folk costume” has been defined as “the visible, outward badge of folk-group identity, worn consciously to express that identity. In the peasant cultures of Europe, identity was determined geographically, and local costumes expressed locality, region, or province…(1).” The traditional folk costume of Bohemia and Moravia (and Slovakia) is called “Kroje.” In a history of Slovak Folk Costumes, it is written: Although the same basic articles of clothes constitute as components of the folk costumes throughout the Czech lands, the shapes, colors, designs, and decorations of these components varies greatly. “There are many varieties of costumes (kroje) in Czechoslovakia,” wrote Ms. Willa Mae Cervenka in the June 1992 issue of the eský hlas “Out of approximately 550 costumes, 27 are more familiar to us because they bear the names of important cultural centers…Each county has its own costume, but each village within that county varies just a bit. The differences among the costumes can be explained by the different geographical positions and influences by neighboring cultures. To a great extend, the appearance of the kroje depends, not only on the district of origin, but also on the purpose for they were used. Fine distinguishing features such as embroidery, colors, shapes of designs, ornaments, flowers, and the style of the woman’s blouses, kerchiefs, lace, etc. characterized the locality. They were so distinctive that an expert could identify the origin of each costume. (3)”
