Courtesy of Porthill Publishers TRADITIONAL ATTIRE BY JASNA BJELADINOVIC-JERGIC A Serbian urban dress, Belgrade, mid-nineteenth century.
Ethnographic Museum, Belgrade.
In the wide variety of costumes, apart from the special traits of costumes which varied from village to village, there were also other differences between villagers and urban dwellers in terms of the way they dressed. Urban clothing in most of the Serbian ethnic territories developed under Turkish and oriental influences. Later, as in Pannonia and along the Adriatic, that influence was largely European. Urban costumes in the Balkan-Oriental style, made of expensive cloths and bearing gold and silver embroidery, were of high artisan craftsmanship. Up to the twentieth century, on the other hand, peasant dress was mostly the product of home and other village handwork. They were fashioned by women, though certain parts of the costumes were done by village artisans. Experience and tradition were passed from elder to younger, from generation to generation. The very first glance at the diversity of village dress reveals certain specificities in the combination of the functional, artistic and aesthetic characteristics of the clothes worn in an entire region. Identical or similar economic circumstances, brought on by the geographical setting, by historical, social and cultural development, all influenced the generation of certain elements of clothing in the framework of larger cultural and geographic regions, such as those in the Dinaric, Adriatic, central Balkan and Pannonian regions. In each region a basic type of dress is characteristic, appearing in many different costuming and decorative forms. The differences originated in the variety of materials for making and decorating which the particular region offered, the pattern-forms and decorative means, and the costuming tradition and level of cultural development.

There is a new rage for ethnic Indian styles in She has evolved her own design arrangementswithin the the garment without losing the essence of the costume.
http://www.indiaprofile.com/fashion/abhas.htm
Exquisitely styled and intricately embroidered, Abhas, the traditional costume of the region of Kutch, has entered the world of high fashion. Successfully adapted to modern styles by Anjali Mangaldas, this beautiful garment has become a rage with the fashion conscious women.
In the village of Kutch, the women looked beautiful in their fabulous Abhas as they swayed to the music. The twinkling lights played mischievously over the gold and thread embroidery while the sequins and badla work sparkled continuously. A woman in an abha, the traditional costume of the Khatri, Memon and Korja Muslim communities of Kutch is a sight to behold. This garment from Kutch, a district in Gujarat, has a history that is as colourful and exciting as the garment. In ancient times the women wore the abha embellished with beautiful tie-dye designs, zari thread embroidery that was very minute and intricate embroidery in coloured silk or cotton thread in a combination of a variety of stitches, integrating minuscule mirror discs into its elaborate and distinct pattern.
The word abha-has been derived from aba a word commonly used in the middle eastern countries which means a top garment or a mantle. The abha based on an age-old traditional classical cut and style, is basically a

Buryat Traditional Clothing
This page is a picture essay on traditional Buryat clothing. Buryat clothing reflects a greater Central Asian and Siberian tradition of ethnic costume and it is no coincidence that it resembles Mongol, Manchu, Tuvan, Altai, Tungus, and Yakut traditional dress. Buryat clothing most closely resembles Mongolian traditional dress, which is no surprise since the Buryats are a Mongolian people. Mongolian dress consists of a long robe, known as a deel , which is worn over trousers. The Buryat word for this robe is digil , which is the ancient Mongolian word for this item of clothing. The digil is perfectly adapted to the Siberian and Mongolian climates, which has below freezing temperatures at least at night for all seasons but the summer. It is also well adapted for riding horses, which is the reason why it was traditionally worn with trousers by both sexes. In order to further conserve warmth in cold weather, the digil fastens at the right shoulder so that there is a double thickness of cloth (and fur in the winter digil covering the vital organs of the chest and belly.

WHERE HAVE ALL THE TUTUS gone?" ask may publisher last issue. Sure enough, we looked around, and there were very few floaty, Romantic tutus in view and even fewer short, stiff, classical ones. Even those were often stylized, like the Jetson-esque disks that costume Forsythe's ballet In the middle, somewhat elevated or Mark Morris's new ballet for ABT, Gong. One recent review described "pouf tutus" as a new style. Dance, style, and audiences change, and designers still want to make their creative mark. But for costumers, form still must follow function; the dancer must be able to perform the choreography, and safely, in whatever fabric and design are presented. Costumes help define character and establish setting. PureMovement's Rome and Jewels may not have an onstage ingenue, but there's no doubt that it's an in-your-face street version in combat boots that takes place at a very different time and place than Shakespeare's portrait of an Italian city state or New York City's 1950s West Side.

Programs
The education programs of Northwest Folklife bring the folk, ethnic and traditional arts to children, their families, and the professionals who serve them in venues such as schools, community centers, and museums. Integrating folk arts into standard curricula and existing programs helps pass on cultural values. This interdisciplinary approach helps to teach ways of engaging with, learning about, and responding to the world around us. Photo of Gloria Fujii by Chris Bennion
What are the folk arts?
Northwest Folklife defines the folk arts as the expressive traditions of groups (cultural, ethnic, religious, familial, occupational and regional). This includes the performing and visual arts (such as music, dance, storytelling, painting, costume design and craftwork) as well as social customs (family folklore, holiday celebrations and games).

Meeting in Davao, Phillipines November 2001 COSTUME DESIGN WORKING GROUP. Later the delegates were each paired up with a student or young designer for a design Charette. Each team had a pile of local fibers and fabrics to work with, a mannequin, a sewing machine and a stitcher. Each had approximately three hours to complete a three dimensional design. The fabric was flying as all worked at a fast pace to complete the task. The costumes varied from very elaborate to very simple. The evening of the first day was a fashion show at the casino introducing the fashions of Alphonso (Boy) Guin'on, the leader of the fashion of Mindanao and internationally shown in Paris, Milan and New York. His work embraced the local textiles and many of the traditional ethnic forms of the Philippines. The pieces were heavy with hand beading and embroidery. This is a speciality of the Philippines and each work was exquisite. On the second day, The President of OISTAT, Maija Pekkanen

Fashion From Rustic To Vogue Wei Ronghui's Development of Chinese National Costume All cultures possess things which identify them as special, speak of their history and their historical way of life. Wei Ronghui is Huia Chinese minority. She is director of the China Museum of Ethnicities and the Center of National Costume Design. Perhaps most importantly, she herself is also a famous designer of national dress. G rowing up among the mountains and clear waters of Guizhou, Wei Ronghui knows the influence that lifestyle has on national dress. Before beginning a new costume, she always goes to the place where the minority in question resides, in order to research their lifestyle and habits. There are 56 different nationalities in China and Wei's footprints can be found in the mountains and villages where many of the minorities reside. She has worked in the fields with local women and sewed with them, absorbing their traditional culture, before communicating that culture through her designs.
Her designs include a wonderful assortment of colors, patterns and fabric; they build on the traditional, while being inspired and creative. Using fabrics of the Buyi, she designed suits for students. She took the pattern used on the straps for carrying babies in the south and used it on the qipao worn in the north. She used long gowns to express the secret beauty of Tibetan women and casual, white cow-herding clothes to convey the energy of young Tibetan men. Her large use of the color white was in keeping with Tibetan's large use of this color.

Bridal couture reflects the diverse textures, patterns, colors, and styles of a global community. We found a London designer specializing in couture for those seeking African influenced gowns. More and more individuals are exploring their heritage and become aware of the traditions of their particular cultural background. Whether you are breaking a glass, wearing a crown or jumping the broom, bringing these traditions into your wedding is a special way of connecting with your history. As people of African descent become more aware of the traditional costumes of their forefathers, we are seeing a growing trend of bridal couture that draws from this rich heritage. The House of Ronke in London offers custom bridal-wear specifically designed with Afro-centric colors and embellishments. This design house creates bridal couture for the client seeking to honor their heritage by wearing the colors and traditional costumes of past generations. There exists an increased demand for more culturally based wedding attire for wedding parties with African ancestry. The House of Ronke has developed techniques incorporating the beauty of traditional wear into modern contemporary designs. Their stunning designs for the bride and groom utilize color, fabric, and patterns to celebrate the ancestry they are highlighting.
