Costa Rica Pre-Columbian History: Even though Costa Rica is a relative newcomer from the geological standpoint, man is an even more recent arrival. Current theory proposes that the most probable route by which humans first reached Central America was via the Bering Strait land bridge that formed with the lowering of sea level during the last of the great glacial periods, about 11,000 years ago. Undoubtedly, the earliest human inhabitants of North America came from Mongolian races that migrated along this route. Nonetheless, based on linguistic similarities, some anthropologists argue that Polynesian peoples may have sailed to the Pacific coast of South America, begun colonization of that continent, and continued their way north into this region; although, if this occurred, it was more likely within the past 3,000 years. Little or no exact evidence exists to indicate how long our species has resided in what is now Costa Rica, but it is generally agreed that the area has been inhabited for at least the past 7,000 years. Those early dwellers in this tropical land were roaming hunter-gatherers. Their movements were likely related to local elimination, or severe decline, in the larger game species populations (e.g., peccaries and deer). As the generations passed and they gained knowledge of the local plant species and their potential uses as food, fiber, building material, and medicine, the foundation for more sedentary populations was laid. The first plants to come into widespread cultivation in the region were corn (

Early History through the Nineteenth Century
Although Columbus skirted the Costa Rican coast in 1502, resistance by the indigenous inhabitants and disease prevented the Spanish from establishing a permanent settlement until 1563, when Cartago was founded. The region was administered as part of the captaincy general of Guatemala. Few of the native inhabitants survived, and the colonists, unable to establish a hacienda system based on slave labor, generally became small landowners. From Cartago, westward expansion into the plateau began in the 18th cent. Costa Rica became independent from Spain in 1821. From 1822 to 1823 it was part of the Mexican Empire of AugustIn de Iturbide. It then became part of the Central American Federation until 1838, when the sovereign republic of Costa Rica was proclaimed. In 1857, Costa Rica participated in the defeat of the filibuster William

The Country and its People
History Although the recorded history of Costa Rica only began in 1502, evidence proves human habitation dates back 10,000 years. There are few signs of large, organized communities with monumental stone architecture or planned ceremonial centers as are common throughout the rest of the isthmus. It is probable that there were several distinct cultures scattered all over the region. Along both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts, the cultures were clearly the same as those in South America. The Caribs inhabited the east coast and the Borucas y Chibchas occupied the southwest. Both semi nomadic groups hunted, fished, raised yucca, squash, and tubers, and lived in village huts. Among the mysteries left from this time period are thousands of perfectly spherical granite balls. They have been discovered in masses of different sizes in west coast burial sites, but the purpose of the balls remains unknown. In 1856, William Walker, a US military adventurer, invaded Costa Rica with his army of recently captured Nicaraguan slaves. Mora organized a small civilian army and succeeded in forcing Walker out of the country. This fight greatly unified the Costa Rican people. The following years of the 19 th century saw power struggles among the members of the coffee-growing elite and the beginning of a democratic Costa Rican Government. The new constitution, adopted in 1949, gave women the right to vote, dismantled the Costa Rican army, banned the communist party, nationalized banks, and established presidential term limits. Figueres was elected president in 1953 and Costa Rica has remained politically stable since.

A Little History
For many years, old friends Jeff Lantz and Stig Hanson from San Diego envisioned their own tourist and fishing lodge in some exotic location of the world.
"I dreamed of having my own lodge since I was a young boy" says Jeff. "I wanted the outdoor lifestyle. As I checked out other operations over the years, I always thought about how I would build and run my own place some day."
"I spent a lot of time in Mexico but started traveling to Costa Rica in 1989 and realized how unique it was. After several trips getting to know the country I became enchanted with the Osa Peninsula. It was quite spectacular in terms of raw nature and, to me, Costa Rica’s best kept secret."
Jeff and Stig spent the next 5 years building the Iguana Lodge in a rustic but very comfortable setting. Iguana Lodge is located just outside the town of Puerto Jimenez. The beach is all sand, stretches for miles and is virtually deserted. Without a doubt, the best beach on the Osa for swimming and boogie boarding, beach combing, kayaking and surf fishing.

CENTRAL AMERICAN CULTURAL-ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION NETWORK HISTORY OF ARCHAEOLOGY - COSTA RICA Costa Rican archaeology has experienced a fuller development than has archaeology in Nicaragua . The shift from reliance on foreign archaeologists to a primary dependence on country nationals has largely been completed in Costa Rica. Various authors (cf. Arias 1982 Corrales 1987 Fonseca 1992 ) have examined the development of archaeology in Costa Rica, and in this section their approaches are merged with the Willey and Sabloff ( ) framework. For example, Arias ( :4, translation F. Costa Rica - General History
We'll begin our short trip through Costa Rica's history with pre-Colombian times. The famous Mayan empire did not extend this far south in Central America. The people here were called the Chorotegas . They farmed corn, beans, fruit, and cotton. They also hunted, had large cities with religious centers, and militaries for gaining land and slaves (used for labor and ritual sacrifice). The women were the only ones allowed access to internal commerce - the market. They were also the primary artisans and writers. Then Christopher Columbus landed at what is now Puerto Limon in 1502. Soon after, Spanish explorers began arriving, and as is the theme throughout Central and South America, the onslaught of the Spanish conquistadors greatly decimated the Chorotegas' numbers through war and disease. These indigenous peoples retreated to the highlands where they could, leaving the lowlands to the Spanish and those captured for slave labor. In 1562 Juan Vasquez de Coronado arrived to take charge of the new colony as governor, establishing the capital of Cartago on the rich volcanic soils of the central area. Due to Spain's out-of-sight-out-of-mind attitude toward its colonies, Costa Rica received little assistance from the father country and so had to subsist on its own, fostering a sense of pride, egalitarianism and self-sufficiency that exists to this day. The little tropical country split with Spain in 1821, moving its capital to San Jose. The 1830's brought the reign of the coffee industry. By the 1850's coffee caught on in Europe, replacing tea as the favored drink in many countries, bringing European influences and more money into the economy than Costa Rica had ever seen.

HISTORY
The first European explorer to encounter Costa Rica was the Christopher Columbus. In 1502 Columbus landed off the coast during his fourth voyage to the New World. His arrival was welcomed and treated with with great hospitality by the indigenous peoples who had never seen white men before. A late explorer by the name of Gil Gonzalex Davila would name the area Costa Rica (Gold Coast) after observiing locals wearing gold in their ears and noses. While Columbus assumed he had discovered a New World, archaeologists today know that people lived in the region of Costa Rica for thousands of years prior to the arrival of the Spanish. One interesting mystery of the region relates to thousands of round granite balls found on the western coast. The size of these balls range from very small to the size of a small car! Recently the ruins of an ancient city was found in the vacinity of San Jose. Throughout the country discoveries of quality jade and gold work has also been found. Of interest to many relates to the sites found in the Nicoya Peninsula that show influence of both the Olmec and Nahuati civilizations.

History
Back in the 16th century, when the Spanish explorers arrived in what today is called Costa Rica, all they found was a region scarcely populated by several poorly organized tribes. The indigenous people lived in quite autonomous groups and were probably not more that 200,000 in total. Since the indigenous communities had very little power when the Spanish arrived, the Spanish settlers has had a great influence over the country's history. Directly related to this phenomenon is the fact that when the Spanish arrived, they brought with them many diseases that killed the few native people that existed.

The Activity of Arenal Volcano
Estimated to be less than 3,000 years old, Arenal is a geologically young volcano. During the various cycles of its life activity has been characterized by an alternating of an explosive, effusive phase with one of weak, explosive activity. Major events in recent history begin with the 1968 killer eruption. July 29, 1968 At 7:20 AM "Cerro" Arenalas it was called by local residentsbegan explosive activity that literally blew the west side off the volcano. Two villages at the foot of the volcano Pueblo Nuevo and Tabacónwere completely destroyed and 78 people died. Between July 29 and 31 three new craters were formed on the western flank of the volcano and a fifteen-square kilometer area (5.8 square miles) was devastated. June, 1975 During this month a period of explosive activity resulted in four strong explosions that blew large amounts of ash into the sky. The ash was carried as far away as Tilarán, 26 kilometers (16 miles) distant. There were also several burning avalanches originating in the top crater that were channeled by the valley of the Tabacón River on the northwestern flank of the volcano. June, 1984
