Costa Rica's Culture
Progressive Values and Attitudes

Known as the "Switzerland of the Americas," Costa Rica has a strong democratic tradition and a long history of dispute resolution. Owing in part to their impressive 95 percent literacy rate and national education system, Costa Ricans are a self-assured and hospitable people. The most stable democracy in Central America, Costa Rica's voting system ensures honest, secure elections. The indigenous people gained their right to vote in 1994.
Peace-Loving People Help Stabilize Region
For the past 100 years, the country has known only two very short military regimes. Following a civil war in 1948, in two of the most innovative moves in recent history, Costa Rican president Pepe Figueres constitutionally abolished the army, and limited presidents to serve one term only. Nine presidential campaigns since 1949 has produced victories for the opposition candidate seven times all with an 80 percent voter participation rate! In a region plagued by civil wars, human rights abuses, and until recently dictatorships, Costa Rica stands out as an exception. Since 1949, when the army was abolished, the country has had a fairly stable democracy. The new Constitution of 1949 included a progressive labor code, upheld a system of social security, and contained a set of social guarantees( such as a minimum wage), that gave the average citizen rights that were ahead of their time.

C hristopher Columbus and his crew were the first Europeans to lay eyes on the shores and forest-covered mountains of Costa Rica. On the great Admiral's fourth and final voyage to the Americas, in he anchored near what is now the port city and provincial capital of Lim n. His brief dealings with the native people he met on the mainland were apparently good-natured, yet this benevolent interaction was not to be the norm during the centuries to come. Columbus landed in what is now Costa Rica , on his fourth voyage to the New World. He named the area Costa Rica (Rich Coast). Some say because of the beauty he found there. Some say because he'd heard rumours of gold. Be that as is may, he was right in the first instance and wrong in the second. It was quickly discovered that there was comparatively little gold, but the natural beauty of Costa Rica has been attracting settlers ever since the initial colonization. The annals of Costa Rica´s proud history are dotted with English, French, German and Italian surnames. Costa Rica continues to attract foreigners. At the present time, approximately 500 Jewish families, and over 20,000 U.S. citizens make their homes in Costa Rica.
was settled by those relatively few Spanish immigrants who valued natural beauty and independence more than riches. Since the rugged mountainous land was not suitable for large plantations, Costa Rica developed into a country of independent family farmers. Even now they are the backbone of the country. This, more than anything else, explains the fact that from independence (1821) on, Costa Rica has been the most stable democratic country in Latin America.

Heredia - History H uman habitation can be traced back more than 10,000 years, but it appears that Costa Rica was sparsely populated and was a relative backwater in the pre-Columbian era. There is little sign of major communities and none of the impressive stone architecture that characterized the more advanced civilizations of Mesoamerica to the north and the Andes to the south. When Columbus arrived near Lim¢n on September 18, 1502 The Indians gave Columbus gold, and he returned to Europe with reports of a plentiful supply of the yellow metal. But the adventurers, who arrived to cash in, found only hostile Indians, swamps and disease for their trouble. Several early attempts to colonize the Atlantic coast failed for the same reasons and, for almost half a century, Costa Rica was passed over, while colonization gathered pace in countries to the north and south. In 1562, the Spanish Main's administrative center in Guatemala sent Juan Vasquez de Coronado to Costa Rica as governor, and Cartago was established as the capital the following year. With no Indian slaves to work the land, the colonists were forced to work the land themselves, scratching out a meagre subsistence by tilling small plots. The impoverished colony grew slowly and was virtually ignored by the Spanish rulers in Guatemala. By the late 18th century, the settlements that would

... Central America /Costa Rica COSTA RICA History and Government
History: Columbus landed in what is now Costa Rica in 1501. Although it was never heavily colonised, the region came under the captaincy-general of Guatemala. The country declared independence from Spain in 1821 but became part of Mexico. Two years later, it was a founding member of the United Provinces of Central America, a short-lived confederation whose capital was Guatemala City. Costa Rica’s liberal political and economic structures developed in an entirely different manner from those of the other members of the confederation. Costa Rica thus found little community of interest with them, especially Guatemala, then the dominant power in the region. It was the first to pull out of the federation in 1838, and declared itself a fully independent state: 2 years later the United Provinces folded. Under the rule of General Tomas Guardia between 1870 and 1882, Costa Rica developed many of its principal modern characteristics, notably the minimal role of the Catholic Church in secular matters and a relatively isolationist foreign policy. (The democratic elections of 1890 are acknowledged to have been the first in the region). Throughout the 20th century, Costa Rica has enjoyed peace and a steady growth in prosperity, with the notable exception of a civil war in 1948 which followed a disputed presidential election. After the victory of José Figueres Ferrer in the conflict, the army was abolished in a unique political decision that entrusted the defence of the country to a Civil Guard, and this decision was enshrined in a new constitution (which still prevails today). The country enjoys good relations with its neighbours: a minor outstanding territorial dispute with Nicaragua over navigation along the San Juan river (which serves as their mutual border) was settled in 2000.

    Costa Rica
    HISTORY
Unlike many of their Central American neighbors, present-day Costa Ricans are largely of European rather than mestizo descent; Spain was the primary country of origin. Few of the native Indians survived European contact; the indigenous population today numbers about 29,000 or 1% of the population. Descendants of 19th century Jamaican immigrant workers constitute an English-speaking minority andat 3% of the populationnumber about 96,000. In 1502, on his fourth and last voyage to the New World, Christopher Columbus made the first European landfall in the area. Settlement of Costa Rica began in 1522. For nearly three centuries, Spain administered the region as part of the Captaincy General of Guatemala under a military Governor. The Spanish optimistically called the country "Rich Coast." Finding little gold or other valuable minerals in Costa Rica, however, the Spanish turned to agriculture. The small landowners' relative poverty, the lack of a large indigenous labor force, the population's ethnic and linguistic homogeneity, and Costa Rica's isolation from the Spanish colonial centers in Mexico and the Andes all contributed to the development of an autonomous and individualistic agrarian society. An egalitarian tradition also arose; this tradition survived the widened class distinctions brought on by the 19th century introduction of banana and coffee cultivation and consequent accumulations of wealth.

Christopher Columbus discovered Costa Rica, Costa Ricans are quick to point out. He arrived here in 1502, bringing with him the exotic diseases which erased most of the native population. Columbus and his minions were enchanted by the rich look of the country, and so named it Costa Rica – "Rich Coast." However, the explorers soon discovered that this "Rich Coast" business was mostly bunk. The streets were not paved with gold. There was no large, amiable native population they could round up export as slaves to the silver mines up north. Spanish adventurers quickly lost interest in the place and wandered off, looking for more gilded pastures. With no get-rich-quick schemes to offer, the country could only attract adventurers drawn by the natural beauty of the country, men and women who were willing to make their fortunes the hard way – by working for them. These pioneers settled in for the long haul, clearing farms and building factories, living at peace with nature and one another, developing a tradition of sound, democratic government which exists here to this day. http://www.angelfire.com/bc/gonebirding/geoclime.html
Costa Rica Geological History: Not long ago, geologically speaking, Costa Rica did not exist. A mere 50 million years ago, this narrow mountainous strip of land was part of the ocean floor, along with the rest of the Central American isthmus between Guatemala and Colombia. Although that may sound like a long time back in earth's history, the dinosaurs had already disappeared some 15 million years previously. Currently, most geologists assume that from 40 million years ago until within only the past three million years what are now Costa Rica and its neighboring countries were then a volcanic archipelago. Using the theory of plate tectonics-which suggests that the earth's crust is fragmented in a number of sections that fit together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, though they are not stationary-the formation of Costa Rica's land mass is explained by its position at the western edge of the so-called Caribbean plate which is moving westward and overriding the Cocos plate located in the Pacific Ocean. As these two chunks of crustal material collide, the rocks of the Cocos plate are pushed downward, subjecting them to increased heat and pressure that eventually turns them into molten rock under great pressure. Because the downward thrust is at an angle to the east, when the pressure build-up finally becomes too much and the lava and steam move back upward towards the surface, they do so beneath the western edge of the Caribbean plate. The result is volcanism.
