Costa Rica Geography
Scenic and Ecological Wonders

Costa Rica seems to have it all - one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet, abundant animal life, and the most hospitable people you will ever encounter. So much inside a small package centered between Nicaragua and Panama, and the Caribbean and the Pacific Oceans, Costa Rica is only 200 miles long. A series of volcanic mountain chains runs from the Nicaraguan border in the northwest to the Panamanian border in the southeast, splitting the country in two. In the center of these ranges is a high-altitude plain, with coastal lowlands on either side. Over half the population lives on this plain, which has fertile volcanic soils. See a map here Visionary Leadership Advances Conservation
After abolishing its army in 1949, Costa Rica's visionary leaders diverted military funds into a leading-edge conservation strategy: Constitutional guarantees to a healthy and ecologically balanced environment. Private and public agencies were solicited to invest in the large-scale protection of the country's natural resources. The result is that some 12 percent of the land is now secured in national parks, and another 16 percent is protected in private nature and forests. The Ministry of Natural Resources guarantees as much as 90 percent of the country's biological diversity will be protected.
Nearly 10 percent of the world's species of plants and animals (more than in Europe and North America combined) thrive in a country roughly the size of West Virginia. More than 850 species of birds, 209 species of mammals , 163 species of amphibians, 200 species of reptiles, 366,000 species of arthropods, and more than 13,000 species of plants, including 1,500 species of trees and nearly 1,500 species of orchids are supported by Costa Rica's rich ecosystem. Monteverde is one of the

How the West was Won:
Why the jet set heads west
Santa Ana, Escazú, Cariari, Airport, Ciudad Colon
San José's stylish western suburbs offer the best shopping and services. The airport, the drier climate and great highway access are culprits in making this the most popular area among foreign residents and multinational corporations.
The East Side: The Cool Side of town
San Pedro, Moravia, Curridabat, Lomas Ayarco The east side is San Jose´s more laid back side and offers a better price structure plus a wide range of property styles. The higher elevation makes it cooler and affords spectacular views in certain areas. There is a lot of new development taking place in Zapote, Curridabat and along the highway towards Cartago. This area is ripe for investment and development.
The Bedroom Communities - Central Locations
To the west and north of downtown San José lie these popular bedroom communities. You are in the center of everything and have the advantage of some of San José's most prestigious and historical addresses.

    The Geography of Costa Rica
The country is divided by a backbone of volcanoes and mountains, an extension of the Andes-Sierra Madre chain which runs along the western side of the Americas. Costa Rica has four distinct cordilleras or mountain ranges Guanacaste and Tilar n in the north, Central and Talamanca in the south. Costa Rica is part of the Pacific "Rim of Fire" and has seven of the isthmus's 42 active volcanoes plus dozens of dormant or extinct cones. Earth tremors and small quakes shake the country from time to time. The last major quake hit on April 22, 1991. Centered on the Caribbean side southeast of San Jose, it measured 7.4 on the Richter scale. The country's highest point is Mt. Chirripo (3,797 meters). The capital, San Jose, and the neighboring major cities of Alajuela and Heredie lies in the middle of the Meseta Central (Central Valley). Almost two-thirds of the nation's population live in this small, fertile valley. The Pacific coastal plain is much narrower than its Caribbean counterpart. Both coasts are lined with white and black sand beaches. Information supplied by the Green Arrow Guide

You'll love this! Costa Rica: Geography
Costa Rica, meaning "rich coast" in Spanish, has a land area of 51,100 square kilometers and is slightly smaller than Switzerland, a country with which it is often compared. Its 3.5 million inhabitants (an average population density of 67 people per square kilometer) are ethnically homogenous but live in a country that varies greatly from one area to another. In the north the Rio San Juan forms most of the 300-kilometer-long border to Nicaragua. The border to the south and southeast separates Costa Rica from Panama. The vast La Amistad National Park is shared by the two countries and spreads out on both sides of the border. The 200-kilometer-long Caribbean coast is to the east and the 1,000-kilometerlong Pacific coast is to the west.
    Topography
Costa Rica can be divided into three major topographic areas: The Cordilleras (mountain chains), which are of volcanic origin, the alluvial Caribbean Lowland Plains and the hilly Pacific Region.

Location Costa Rica, the southernmost of the five republics that comprise Central America extends approximately from eight to eleven degrees north latitude and between eighty-three and eighty-six degrees west longitude. According to the latitudes mentioned, Costa Rica is located practically in the center of the inter-tropical zone 10° north of the equator. This zone is also referred to as the "Hot Zone", due to its prevailing warm temperatures throughout. It is also located on the North American Continent, on the Central American Isthmus. It is six hours west of Greenwich, Costa Rica borders with present-day Panama (which was a province of Colombia until 1903). This border issue went unresolved for many years, with Costa Rica claiming as part of its territory the littoral of Chiriqui Lagoon. Later, however, to end the dispute, Costa Rica and Colombia submitted the matter for French President Loubet to decide, but he suggested an equivocal border that failed to resolve the issue. Once Panama was established as a republic, the matter was submitted to the Chief Justice of the United States, Edward Douglas White, who presented his verdict on September 12, 1914. It pleased the Costa Ricans but was not altogether satisfactory to the Panamanians. Hotel List

Here is some information that may help:
Two mountain chains together run almost the entire length of Costa Rica. These are, in the north, the Cordillera Volcánica, noted, as the name implies, for its volcanic activity, and, in the south, the Cordillera de Talamanca. The Cordillera Volcánica may be divided into three ranges: from northwest to southeast, the Cordillera de Guanacaste, the Cordillera de Tilarán, and the Cordillera Central. The Cordillera de Talamanca is a massive granite batholith, quite different geologically from the volcanically active northern ranges. Costa Rica's highest point is Mount Chirripó, in the Talamanca system, at 12,533 feet (3,820 metres). Two of the highest peaks in the Cordillera Volcánica, Irazú (11,260 feet) and Poás (8,871 feet), have paved roads reaching to the rims of their active craters. These volcanoes overlook the densely populated upland basin called the Meseta Central (Valle Central), and they pose a serious natural hazard, as do earthquakes for most parts of the country.
