In Costa Rica More than one million tourists visit Costa Rica each year. What draws so many people to this lightly advertised destination? Natural beauty and diversity are the answers. Costa Rica covers only 0.03% of the surface of the planet but it has about 6% of the world's biodiversity. Visitors encounter seas, beaches, rivers, mountains, and an abundance of flora and fauna Twelve major life zones provide habitat for over 10,000 kinds of flowering plants, 850 bird species, 3,000 butterfly species, and 209 species of mammals. Volcanoes, rainforests, cloud forests, lowland jungles, the Pacific coastline, and tranquil Caribbean beaches stretch across seven provinces. Thirty percent of the land is protected by national and private reserves, which harbor more than five percent of the world's plant and animal species. The Caribbean region of Costa Rica is noted for its variety of aquatic ecosystems and its beautiful white and black sand beaches, providing a picturesque setting for activities such as sport-fishing, snorkeling, and sun-bathing. The Pacific coast boasts some of Costa Rica's most famous beaches for surfing. Costa Rica boasts 20 national parks, 8 biological reserves, and a wealth of other protected areas to enchant those who marvel at the wonders of nature. It draws ecotourists from around the globe. Activities include horse-back riding, hiking mountainous paths in the cloud forests, and guided bird-watching tours.

You'll love this! Costa Rica: History
Heritage and Culture
Costa Rican culture is in many ways a reflection of its racial mix. The predominant influence has long been European, which is reflected in everything from the official language Spanish to the architecture of the country's churches and other historic buildings. The indigenous influence is less apparent, but can be found in everything from the tortillas that are served with a typical Costa Rican meal to the handmade ceramics sold at roadside stands. A more recent cultural influence is that of the United States, which can be noted in everything from the movie selection at San Jose's theaters to the fast food chains that line some of the capital's streets.
An important aspect of Costa Rica's cultural heritage is their love of peace and democracy. Ticos like to point out that their nation is the exception in Latin America, where military dictatorships long dominated politics.

Photography Exhibit is a Blast From the Past
By Sonia Cordero
Tico Times Staff
Walking through the “People and Streets from Yesterday” photography exhibit at the National Museum of Costa Rica feels as if someone opened a time capsule and put the contents on display. The exhibit features are 150 photographs – inspired by the life of Costa Rican people between the years of 1880-1930. It displays a period of time when campesinos walked barefoot and contrasts it with the elegance of the few rich families in the area who wore European clothes. It was an era when oxcarts were the main source of transportation and the first car was a novelty that captured the attention of all who witnessed its passing.
