The Ticos: Culture and Social Change in Costa Rica > Customer Review #1: almost as good as my favorite CR book!

While Biesanz and company have produced a lucid and info-packed "insiders" book on Costa Rica, I still find that it comes in second to my favorite CR book, "Costa Rica: The Last Country The Gods Made": a hybrid of a coffee-table book, a social/ politcial discussion and a geological history in a series of essays and sidebars. The Last Country The Gods Made truly does live up to its scope of topics. Aside from geology and social history, it covers the political and economic history of the country and emphasizes its liberal reformist tradition as exceptional in Central America.

"Everything about Costa Rica was a phenomenal adventure - the sights, the wildlife, the entire country. Even more amazing than that, however, were the times I spent with the children Caesar, Jose, Hannah, they all brightened my day and made each day I was in Costa Rica special."
- Jennifer, Costa Rica volunteer
In the heart of Central America is the beautiful country of Costa Rica. With the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other, Costa Rica is known throughout the world for its stunning beaches and lush green rainforests. While these natural resources have made the country a well-known tourist destination, its unique and vibrant culture provides an ideal environment for fostering cultural understanding and working with the local community. In 1948, Costa Rica abolished its military in favor of working toward social improvement, a decision that made the country a pillar of stability in Central America. Along with its history and geography, it is this sense of progressive thought for which Ticos (the people of Costa Rica) have great pride.

Costa Rica is a Central American success story: since the late 19th century, only two brief periods of violence have marred its democratic development. Costa Rica History Geography Climate Services Culture Culture Costa Rican People The vast majority of Costa Rican people are White, mainly of Spanish descent. Less than 2% of the population is Black, except in the thinly populated Caribbean province of Limón. Here, about 33% of the inhabitants trace their ancestry to either the early days of slavery in Costa Rica or to the immigration of labor forces from Jamaica to build the railways and work the banana plantations in the late 1800's. Indigenous Tribes Ticos The National Theater The most famous theater in the country is the Teatro Nacional (National Theater), built between 1890 and 1897. The story goes that a noted European opera company featuring the talented singer, Adelina Patti, was on a Latin American tour but declined to perform in Costa Rica for lack of a suitable hall. Immediately, the coffee elite put a special cultural tax on coffee exports to enable a world-class theater to be built The Teatro Nacional is now the venue for plays, opera, performances by the National Symphony, ballet, poetry readings and other cultural events. It is also an architectural work in its own right and is a landmark in any city tour of San José. http://www.puntacoral.com

ARTS AND CULTURE Historically, Costa Rica has been relatively impoverished in the area of native arts and crafts. The country, with its relatively small and heterogeneous pre-Columbian population (devastated at an early stage), had no unique cultural legacy that could spark a creative synthesis where the modern and the traditional might merge. Social tensions (often catalysts to artistic expression) felt elsewhere in the isthmus were lacking. More recently, creativity has been stifled by the Ticos' desire to praise the conventional lavishly and criticize rarely. In recent years, however, artists across the spectrum have found a new confidence and are shaking off rigid social norms, exciting for a country long dismissed as a cultural backwater. The performing arts are flourishing, and the National Symphony Orchestra sets a high standard for other musical troupes to follow. Ticos now speak proudly of their "cultural revolution." The new sophistication in culture is amply demonstrated by the introduction of an International Art Festival in 1992 (see Festivals and Holidays, this chapter), an annual event that has won a place among the arts festivals of the continent. The festival has brought inspiration and new ideas while raising the quality of local groups by allowing them to measure themselves against international talent.

The Caribbean coast is very unique in its culture where the food, music and way of life are greatly influenced by the indigenous, Chinese and African cultures. Famous for its beaches, the Caribbean Coast boasts over its two most beautiful ones, Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo. Some beaches have restaurants, kayak rentals, and horse back riding available. The result is a climate with no pronounced dry season, even though it does tend to be less rainy in the months of March, April, September, and October, and typically rains mostly in June, July, August, November, and December. The lowland regions remain warm and humid year-round, while the higher portions are both cooler and wetter.

Cartago - Culture B asilica de Nuestra Senora de Los Angeles, named after the Patron Saint of Costa Rica, is constructed on the site of a miracle. On August 2, 1635, The Virgin showed herself as a doll made of stone to a poor girl named Juana Pereira. The girl took the doll home to play with, but the doll disappeared, then reappeared at the spot where she had first seen it. This was viewed as a sign that the virgin wanted a church built here, and so was it done There is a spring in the back part of the cathedral. The water from here is believed to have healing properties. Every second of August , Costa Ricans ask The Virgin for special favours, many of them walking or even crawling on hands and knees from their home towns to the Cathedral to present their petitions, hoping these sacrifices will be noticed and their requests granted. Cartago's central park (between Avenidas 1 and 2 and Calle Central and Calle 2) is worth visiting. Facing the park are Las Ruinas de Cartago of the Iglesia de la Parroquia. The Cartogan Ruins of the Church of la Parroquia. The church was built in 1575, damaged by many earthquakes and rebuilt many times by the Cartagineses. The whopper quake of 1910 finally levelled the structures, so today only the walls still stand, overgrown inside by a profusion of lovely tropical plants and flowers.

Other ethnic groups like the Boruca, Bribri, Cabecar, Guaymi, Huetar and Guatuso spoke a language that was rooted in the great continent to the south, probably in the vicinity of Columbia. This became even more complex as emigres from the Caribbean moved into permanent settlements along the coast bringing with them strong Caribe and Arawak sounds. Some of the old words for geographical locations have disappeared along with influences of arriving Spanish settlers but a few have remained pure like Talamanca or Poas or Tiskita. They reflect three different languages, yet tell a story in translation. Talamanca means place of blood, a reference to the butchering of turtles on the Caribbean coast during seasonal migrations. Poas is the buttery yellow flower that grows among the patchwork of thorns and thistles near the volcano's summit and Tiskita is the swift Osprey or fish eagle as it is commonly called by the people of the Osa Peninsula. A complex puzzle of gods, minor deities, sacred plants and animals as well as changes in the night skies were all part of the great mysteries, interpreted by Sharmans and Caciques. The wisest could predict and make recommendations based on celestial movement, foretell of good or evil in times of plagues and natural disasters. Where men failed, gods gained strength and were given exemplary powers, interpreted and carried out by appointees, chosen by a headman or Carcique. As farming became more sophisticated, cultivation left the shade of the canopy for clearings and the soil was broken to accept a seed or rootstock or small plants, then too came the need to predict the seasons. When would the winds fall, rains begin and fields be furtile for planting.
