Fall 2003: Announcing the New Culture and Language Course in the SFS Costa Rica Semester Program
LS 205E Language, Culture and Society of Costa Rica (2 credits) contains two distinct but integrated modules. The Spanish language module offers listening, oral and written practice of the Spanish language at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels of proficiency. Students will engage in oral and written grammar and vocabulary exercises; and develop Spanish language skills and tools required for their research projects. The socio-culture module helps students develop a more refined understanding of Costa Rican culture and the various communities with which we work. Students participate in lectures, field exercises and other activities including a homestay - all of which teach them strategies and skills for working with people in a community-based research context and help them to assist with community extension projects.
"Our research affected the lives of real fisherman - real people that we saw everyday on the docks, in the stores and in our hearts. We knew we had to do our work competently.” Amy Aieta

Costa Rican People The vast majority of Costa Rican people are White, mainly of Spanish decent. Less than 2% of the population is Black, except in the thinly populated Caribbean province of Limón. Here, about 33% of the inhabitants trace their ancestry to either the early days of slavery in Costa Rica or to the immigration of labor forces from Jamaica to build the railways and work the banana plantations in the late 1800's.
Indigenous Tribes A small number of Indians remain, making up less than 1% of the population. Note that the literal translation of Indian is indio which is an insulting term to Costa Rica's indigenous inhabitants. They prefer the term

Culture
Costa Rica is noted more for its natural beauty and friendly people than for its culture. The overwhelming European influence erased almost all indigenous culture, and because Costa Rica was a country of subsistence agriculturalists until the middle of the 19th century, cultural activity has only begun to blossom in the last 100 years. By some estimates, more than 75% of Costa Ricans are Roman Catholics and 14% are evangelical Christians. In practice, most church attendance takes place at christenings, funerals and marriages. Blacks on the Caribbean coast tend to be Protestant, and there is a sprinkling of other denominations in San Jos©, including a small Jewish community. Spanish is the official language, though English is understood in touristed areas. Many Caribbean blacks speak a lively dialect of English, known as Creole. Indigenous languages are spoken in isolated areas, primarily Bribr, which is estimated to be understood by about 10,000 people. No one goes to Costa Rica for the cuisine. Although traditional dishes run to the South American staples of beef, chicken and fish dishes, with rice, corn or beans and fresh fruit as supplements, most of this fare has given way to the ubiquitous pizza and burger option. And even these can only be included in 'cuisine' by stretching the definition to its breaking point. Also be warned that ticos love to spice up European dishes with salt - lots of it. We're talking lip-puckering, instant-dehydrating, body-shuddering proportions. On the positive side, their coffee is sublime. Even the coffee that accompanies the limp burger from the fast food joint is a cut above your average North American cup of coffee.

Costa Rica culture:
Facts on government, politics and history
Costa Rica has a historical uniqueness that marks its culture, politics and people even today. Ticos, as Costa Ricans call themselves, enjoy an island of stability in a region marked by poverty and warfare. The facts speak for themselves: 96% literacy; socialized, universal medicine; 95% coverage for telephone and electricity, compared to less than 68% in the rest of the isthmus; and potable water in even the most remote communities. Below you'll find more information about Costa Rican Democracy and facts on the Costa Ricans.
Costa Rica Culture: Political System
Costa Rica has a constitutional democracy with a unicameral Legislative Assembly directly elected in free, multiparty elections every four years. Dr. Abel Pacheco of the Social Christian Unity Party (PUSC) won the 2002 presidential election in an historic runoff. He won the runoff by a wide margin, but the legislature is severely divided. The PUSC won 19 of 57 Legislative Assembly seats and their traditional rival, the National Liberation Party (PLN), won 17 seats. But the big surprise was the Citizen’s Action Party (PAC), which won 14 seats and the Libertarian Party, which won 6 seats. The Costa Rican Renovation Party (evangelical) has 1 representative.
Costa Rica Facts: Major Political Parties
The two major parties are centrist, with the ruling PUSC inclined to the Christian democratic right and the opposition PLN tilted to the moderate Social Democratic left. Party leaders; however, tend to blur these policy and ideological differences. Moreover, Costa Rican emphasis on consensus pushes most governments toward the ideological center. The minority parties are currently hold an important faction in the Assembly, with neither major party enjoying an outright majority.

Homogenous and Pleasurable Costa Ricans
Extremely friendly, full of hospitality, love to dance and jump at any opportunity to celebrate. Family-oriented, peaceful and fun loving. Combined with its amazing natural beauty, diverse landscape and unlimited fun, it's the Costa Rican people and blending culture that makes Costa Rica a perfect vacation destination. Because of an overwhelming European influence, over 90% of Costa Rica is white or "Mestizo" (mixture) of Spanish heritage stemming from the Columbus explorations and Spanish conquests of the early 1500s. Unlike its Caribbean neighbors, less than 3% of the Cost Rican population is black with most living in the province of Limón. Their ancestry is traced to the importing of slavery and Jamaican immigration attracted to the employment opportunities of building railroads and working the banana plantations in the late 1800s. Many of the blacks speak a lovely dialect of English with Caribbean influence. A very small number of indigenous Native Indians remain in Costa Rica having been decimated by Spanish conquests or melded over centuries into Costa Rican society and blended culture. Because of the many attractions of Costa Rica, there is a sliver of North American and Asian population.

The people attend films with great frequency, enjoying international cinema. They listen to an extraordinary variety of music, especially from the many radio stations in the country. Residents of the Meseta Central attend the National Theatre, where the music played and the drama performed may come from any part of the world. Costa Ricans take a strong interest in their pre-Columbian art, which includes large statues from the Pacific northwest, smaller examples of carved relief in stone from other districts, and some fine work done in the form of small objects of gold. Samples of all these may be seen in the national museum. Guayabo National Park, near Turrialba, features the country's only preserved pre-Columbian archaeological site. Genuine colonial architecture is rather scarce, the most famed example being a 17th-century mission in Orosí. Cartago's older buildings, destroyed by earthquakes, have in some cases been restored; new ones like them have also been built. Among the folk arts, Costa Rica is most famous for its highly decorative oxcarts. Ticas and Ticos - The People
The inhabitants of Costa Rica like to call themselves Ticos or (for women) Ticas, an abbreviation of Hermaniticos and Hermaniticas - little brothers and little sisters; an affectionate nickname popular throughout Central America.
Within the country the population density varies from one region to another. In the heavily-populated Meseta Central an average 300 people live in each square kilometer; in the sparsely populated coastal regions the average is only 20 people per square kilometer. More than half of all Costa Ricans live in cities, a trend which is typical in Latin America. The average age of its population, however, remains a serious problem: 60 percent of all Ticos are younger than 25 and almost 50 percent are younger than 20. This means that thousands of new jobs have to be created each year - no small task in times of recession. Demographics The native Indian inhabitants of Costa Rica now number approximately 15,000 and make up 0.5 percent of the population, as opposed to 100 percent in 1502. Descendants of the numerous Indian tribes now call themselves Indigena (indigenous), but are mostly of mixed race following 500 years of contact with the white inhabitants. The word "Indio" is considered by many to be an insult.

Costa Rica History
Columbus first saw this portion of Central America in 1502, on his last trip to the New World. Spanish settlement did not begin until the mid 1500s, however, because early expeditions were beset by disease and local resistance from the Guaymi people. The Spanish did find some gold in the area - inspiring the name Costa Rica (Rich Coast) - but not the large reserves they were hoping for. Colonization proceeded slowly along the east coast until the colonists finally moved to the fertile valleys and mesas of the interior, known as the Central Valley. Geography kept the plantation system, with its attendant slavery, from developing. Instead, the colonists gathered near the indigenous communities and built ranches and farms. The towns grew into distinct provinces that even today have their own character and history. That independence and self-reliance is thought to be the reason democracy came more naturally to Costa Rica than to its neighbors when the country gained its independence in the early 1820s. Brief civil wars erupted among the major cities, but the more liberal forces of San Jose emerged victorious, which moved the country toward fair, democratic elections in the late 1800s.

Maybe you woke up one morning and said, “Honey I want to go to Costa Rica!” Or maybe you are a business person who just decided to check out the opportunities in that beautiful place where you vacationed last summer. You came, and you saw; talked to our people, drank and ate our food, enjoyed our beaches and volcanoes, shared with foreign residents and tourists, checked out the potential opportunities, and now you are in love with this country… what to do, what to do! Well, first of all congratulations, you have chosen the right place to fall in love with; and secondly, do not worry, what you are experiencing is the reason why thousands of foreigners from all over the globe are living and doing business, or have retired, in Costa Rica. So many people cannot be wrong, but, is it right for you? Considering the possibility of establishing a secondary residence, retiring, or doing business in Costa Rica, is a life changing decision. One that can potentially improve your quality of life, or your investment portfolio; even if this is on paper just “another” developing country. Therefore, as any foreign resident, or investor, who once was in your position would tell you; if you are going to do it, do it the right way, and surround yourself with the right people who can assist you, and unconditionally be there for you during this new venture. We hope that this article can assist you in finding your way.
