In General As defined by the National Federation of Paralegal Associations, a paralegal is a person qualified through education, training or work experience to perform substantive legal work that requires knowledge of legal concepts and is customarily, but not exclusively, performed by a lawyer. After appropriate paralegal training, this person may be retained or employed by a lawyer, law office, governmental agency or other entity or may be authorized by administrative, statutory or court authority to perform this work. The formal establishment of paralegal education and the profession can be traced to the 1960s when individuals were trained to assist attorneys in making legal services available to the poor during the "War on Poverty." Shortly afterward public agencies began hiring paralegals; private law firms and corporations recognized the benefits of employing paralegals to supply efficient support, reduce the expense of legal services, and increase the availability of legal (and now paralegal) services to the public. Paralegals (also known as legal-assistants) work in law firms or for private practice attorneys in the following capacities (but by no means is this the limit of what you can do and where you can work): preparation of legal documents, legal research, fact-checking, writing, and from time to time the interviewing of clients. Although you would be prohibited by law from the actual practice of law, you may be called upon to do many of the same things that lawyers do.

SCHOOL OF THE AIR - HISTORY
From the early 1900's, the education of isolated children across Australia was catered for by the Correspondence Schools in the capital cities of their respective states. Lessons took days and sometimes weeks to reach their destinations and by the time the completed lessons were dispatched to their teachers, marked and returned to the children, months could have elapsed. As these children rarely had an opportunity to visit their teachers at the Correspondence School, the children inevitably completed their entire schooling without ever meeting their teacher or schoolmates. The aim of School of the Air was to bring isolated children out of the silence and give them a sense of belonging. The first "School of the Air" in Australia was established at Alice Springs on 8th June 1951. The radio network, maintained by the Royal Flying Doctor Service, was used by the school to make two-way broadcasts to the children in that area via HF Radio. Following a visit to Central Australia, the Hon. R.J. Heffron, M.L.A, former Premier of NSW, and at the time, Minister for Education, decided that the far west of NSW should be served by a "School of the Air" similar to that operating at Alice Springs.

    Dear prisoner education supporter,
RAIL and LAF are joining forces in efforts to organize a correspondence school for prisoners. Our mission is to provide college level correspondence courses to Massachusetts prisoners, particularly those suffering in isolation cells, generally called "control units" or "the hole". While incarcerated, prisoners are routinely denied access to education and educational materials. This perpetuates cycles of violence, self-hatred and despair. Upon release, ex-prisoners have little job skills, and are forced into criminalized activities for survival. We recognize that education is power and, given the state's actions to cut this access to power, people sympathetic to prisoners' struggles must combat this trend and serve prisoners needs. In coalition with volunteer educators, we aim to use this program as a base for building a future accredited degree granting program for prisoners. We are currently in the initial organizational stage, pulling together educators, student volunteers, prisoner access, funding ideas, researching correspondence schools and an overall plan for the curriculum structure. In these initial stages, our focus will be on Massachusetts prisoners as we have the most contact with them.

OSA Evaluation of Financial Qualifications of Private Business, Trade, or Correspondence Schools Chapters 75C, 75D and 93 of the Massachusetts General Laws require the Office of the State Auditor (OSA) and the Department of Education to annually evaluate the financial and academic qualifications of applicants for licensure or registration as private business, trade, or correspondence schools. Schools conducted by employers to train their own employees, or schools or colleges chartered or otherwise authorized by the Commonwealth, are exempt from the mandate of the statutes. These consumer protection statutes were enacted to ensure that private occupational schools are both financially and academically qualified to operate in Massachusetts. Prior to licensure by the Department of Education, all such non-degree granting business, trade, and correspondence schools are required to submit financial statements to the OSA. This information is evaluated to determine the solvency of each applicant. Those schools determined to be financially qualified for licensure or registration must then secure tuition protection in the amount recommended by the OSA.

The word Gnosis is a Greek word meaning ultimate knowledge , obtained by direct inner experience. Gnosis is the perennial philosophy that enlightened Jesus, Mohammed, Krishna, Buddha, Hermes, Pythagoras, Moses, Socrates, Orpheus, Quetzalcoatl, etc. Gnosis has been expressed in many forms in different civilizations, through a variety of symbols and structures. Nonetheless, beyond this illusory veil of differences exists the Golden Thread that is Gnosis - the pure universal expression of Love and Wisdom. Gnosis is the path of self realization through experience. With the awakening of higher consciousness, we can obtain direct experience of our inner Truth. The Gnostic teachings are based on four pillars of study: Science, Art, Philosophy, and Mysticism/Religion and consist of a wide variety of esoteric disciplines, all of which are presented in a very practical way. Practices are given to the students by Gnostic Instructors to verify what is learned, so that the knowledge can be experienced directly. We study and practice many subjects such as: Meditation, Gnostic Psychology, Dream Yoga, Subtle Anatomy of the Human, Hermetic Astrology, Medieval Alchemy, etc.
Samael Aun Weor [Victor Manuel Gomez Rodriguez, 1917-1977] published over sixty books on Gnosis and the Esoteric Path, as well as a vast collection of lectures. Samael Aun Weor lectured widely, wrote extensively on a broad range of esoteric, philosophical and anthropological subjects, taught and oriented many people in their esoteric studies, and conducted numerous seminars and international conferences on Gnostic studies.

Revisions to 19 TAC Chapter 74, Curriculum Requirements
STATEMENT The State Board of Education adopted a revised 19 TAC Chapter 74 on May 8, 1998. These revisions address the courses that schools are required to offer, the three high school graduation plans, options for awarding credit, correspondence courses, award of credit, innovative courses and programs, and identification of advanced courses for extracurricular activities. Explanations address the issues of immediate import to students, administrators, and parents at the end of the 1997-98 school year. A more comprehensive question and answer document for the 1998-99 school year will be distributed at a later date. If you would like to ask a question regarding Chapter 74, please call the department of Curriculum and Professional Development at 512-463-9581. Q. Why has 19 TAC Chapter 74 been revised? A. The State Board of Education's adoption of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in 1997 necessitated revisions to Texas Administrative Code (TAC), Chapter 74, which previously included references to the Essential Elements (EEs). The TEKS replace the EEs effective September 1, 1998. Additional changes were made to graduation requirements based upon actions by the State Board of Education. Q. With what class does the revised Chapter 74 take effect?
