Spanish, born in Salamanca, ca. 1510, died in Mexico City, 1554. Coronado was governor of New Galicia (contemporary Sinaloa and Nayarit, Mexico). As such he had already sent out Fray Marcos de Niza on a voyage to the north, to New Mexico. When Marcos returned he told about a wealthy, golden city, called Cibola. Of course this raised Coronado's interest, and he decided to try to get that gold. He set out in 1540, joined by a large expedition of 340 Spanish, 300 Indian allies, and 1000 slaves, both native Americans and Africans. He followed the coast of the Gulf of California northward to the Sonora, then traveled upstream the Sonora, and crossed the Gila to Cibola, in the west of present-day New Mexico. There he was met by disappointment. Cibola was nothing like the great golden city fray Marcos had described, it was just a simple pueblo of the Zuni indians. Marcos was sent back to Mexico in disgrace. Hernando de Alvarado was sent east, and found villages around the Rio Grande. Coronado set up his winter quarters in one of them, Tiguex (present-day Bernalillo near Albuquerque). During his wintering he suffered from fierce attacks by the Indians. He met an Indian, which he called "the Turk", who told him about Quivira, a rich country in the northwest. He decided to look for Quivira, taking the Turk as his guide. He traversed the Texan panhandle, and marched on further north. However, the Turk was found lying about the route, or at least Coronado thought he did so, and was executed. Other guides led him further to Quivira, and he reached a village near present-day Lindsborg, Kansas. But his disappointment was repeated: The Quivira indians (later known as Wichita) were no rich people at all, the village consisted mostly of thatched huts, and not even small amounts of gold could be found. Coronado returned to Tiguex, where his main force had remained behind. Here he spent another winter.

Lucas Vasquez de Ayllon Lucas Vasquez de Ayllon (eyel YAWN) (1480?-1526), a Spanish colonizer, founded the first European settlement in what is now the United States. The settlement, on what is now the nation's southeast coast, survived for only about six months. Ayllon was born in Toledo, Spain. In 1504, he arrived in the Americas and served as a judge for the Spanish government on the island of Hispaniola. Ayllon became wealthy, in part by trading in Indian slaves. He also sponsored voyages to the coast of what may have been present-day South Carolina or Georgia. The first of these voyages, made in 1521, was led by Spanish explorer Francisco Gordillo. Ayllon heard reports that the land Gordillo saw, called Chicora by the Indians, was rich in natural resources and resembled southern Spain.

Introduction Beginning with the Vikings in the 8th century, the Americas have been explored by many people. During the 1500's and 1600's European countries began exploring across the Atlantic Ocean . Christopher Columbus was one of the first explorers to attempt this great feat. His accomplishments sparked the interest of exploration in many other countries. Explorers have had various reasons for risking their lives when setting out across the world. Marco Polo was searching for new trade routes, David Livingston traveled across Africa as a missionary, while others were motivated by the need to chart and map new areas. In this webquest, you will find out what drove the exploration for these significant explorers and how did the motives for explorations differ from country to country?
The Task You will work in your assigned group to search the Internet and use print materials to identify what drove the exploration of your explorers. During your search you will be looking for certain aspects of his exploration. Once you have obtained these aspects, you will be able to complete the following:

The Shamen's Portal Coronado's run in with the Paranormal Francisco Vasquez de Coronado (1510-1554) From the time of the earliest Spanish voyages to the New World, the soils of Texas and Oklahoma have inspired a continuous flow of legends and searches for deposits of gold, silver and mysteries. Francisco Vasquez de Coronado was among the very first of this long line of fortune seekers in the midwest. Coronado was born at Salamanca, Spain in 1510. At the age of twenty-five, he sailed to the New World, and settled in Mexico City. There, he married, started a family, and was appointed in 1538 as governor of the province of Nueva Galicia. In response to reports of riches at the fabled Seven Cities of Cibola, Coronado led an expedition into what is now the southwestern United States and northern Texas. The expedition totaling nearly one thousand men left Mexico in 1540. After months of searching, however, the expedition found no trace of treasure. Most of the party returned to Mexico the following year, but Coronado and a smaller force continued the search. They finally returned to Mexico City, with their saddlebags still empty, in the spring of 1542. Although Coronado lost considerable credibility during the expedition, he regained his post as city councilman on his return to Mexico City, and remained in that position until his death on September 22, 1554.

While many of them focused on the southern latitudes Mexico, Central America, and the Amazon some explorers were tentatively discovering what is now the United States. The first Spanish explorers did not stray far from the Atlantic coast, although Hernando de Soto blazed a cruel path through much of what is now the southeastern part of the United States. But within 50 years of Columbus' discovery, a few adventurous souls would penetrate deep into the interior West. Palmetto near Walton Beach, Florida

    • Christopher Columbus sailed from Spain in 1492. He explored North America. Ferndinand Magellan planned to sail around the world. He left Spain in 1519, and in 1520 reached the coast of Brazil. In 1521 after sailing across the Pacific he reached the Philippines where he died. The remainder of his crew arrived back in Spain in 1522. In 1497, John Cabot became the first European to visit the northeast coast of North America since the Vikings. Sailing in the service of King Henry VII of England, Cabot landed on the east coast of Canada or on the coast of Maine. Cabot's voyage helped lay the foundation of English claims to North America. One of the most important Spanish expeditions in the New World was commanded by Hernando Cortes (pronounced kawr TEHZ), who in 1519 left with more than 600 men. He sailed to what is now the Mexican state of Yucatan, which was a center of Maya civilization. Cortes moved along the coast of Mexico and then inland to Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City), the capital of the Aztec empire. Along the way, he met an Indian woman named Malinche, whom the Spaniards called Dona Marina. Malinche, who knew both the Maya and the Aztec languages, served as an interpreter for Cortes. In 1532 and 1533, the Spanish explorer

Francisco Vasquez de Coronado Francisco Vasquez de Coronado was born in Salamanca, Spain in 1510. He came to the New World in 1535 to seek his fortune. Soon after he arrived in Mexico, he was appointed governor of New Galicia, a part of Mexico north of Mexico City. He became very powerful and well known. In 1540, Coronado was chosen by the Viceroy of Mexico to lead an expedition to find the treasure that was supposed to exist in northern Mexico - called the seven Golden Cities of Cibola. With a group of 336 soldiers and several hundred enslaved natives, he traveled through what is now northern Mexico and the southwestern USA. This journey covered what is now Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. His expedition found only Zuñi, Hopi, and Pueblos, Native Americans who refused Coronado when he demanded that they convert to Christianity. Coronado killed many Native Americans during this expedition. Since he did not find gold, silver, or other treasures, his expedition was considered a failure by Spanish leaders.
Coronado later moved to Oklahoma and Kansas. He had been told that there was indeed a rich Indian kingdom, but it was farther to the northeast, and was call Quivira. Coronado's search for Quivira ended in the same disappointing way as his earlier quest for Cibola. All he found was a hot sun and a group of thatched huts. Disappointed, Coronado returned to Mexico a broken man. He was relieved of his position as governor of New Galicia, but stayed in Mexico until his death in 1554.
