NativeTech: Native American Technology and Art NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY OF CORN Read about some Uses of Indian Corn Try some Recipes from the Woodland Culture Area Evolution of Maize Agriculture Corn or maize (zea mays) is a domesticated plant of the Americas. Along with many other indigenous plants like beans, squash, melons, tobacco, and roots such as Jerusalem artichoke, European colonists in America quickly adopted maize agriculture from Native Americans. Crops developed by Native Americans quickly spread to other parts of the world as well. Over a period of thousands of years, Native Americans purposefully transformed maize through special cultivation techniques. Maize was developed from a wild grass (Teosinte) originally growing in Central America (southern Mexico) 7,000 years ago. The ancestral kernels of Teosinte looked very different from today's corn. These kernels were small and were not fused together like the kernels on the husked ear of early maize and modern corn. By systematically collecting and cultivating those plants best suited for human consumption, Native Americans encouraged the formation of ears or cobs on early maize. The first ears of maize were only a few inches long and had only eight rows of kernels. Cob length and size of early maize grew over the next several thousand years which gradually increased the yields of each crop. Eventually the productivity of maize cultivation was great enough to make it possible and worthwhile for a family to produce food for the bulk of their diet for an entire year from a small area. Although maize agriculture permitted a family to live in one place for an extended period of time, the commitment to agriculture involved demands on human time and labor and often restricted human mobility. The genetic alterations in teosinte changed its value as a food resource and at the same time affected the human scheduling necessary for its effective procurement.

Boosting Vitamin E in Corn and Other Crops
By David Elstein
October 9, 2003 An Agricultural Research Service scientist and cooperators are developing new varieties of corn and other food crops that have higher levels of vitamin E. Twenty-five percent of Americans do not get enough vitamin E. It is particularly important for pregnant women, and some researchers have shown that it can decrease the risk of heart disease. The research was done by molecular biologist Edgar B. Cahoon of the ARS Plant Genetics Research Unit at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis, along with his former colleagues at DuPont Crop Genetics, Wilmington, Del. The scientists used genes found in rice, barley and wheat, each of which contains high levels of vitamin E. Now that their three years of research have led to a safe, healthful variety of corn, Cahoon and his colleagues are working on similar studies with soybeans. He believes many other crops would benefit from the new approach. Vitamin E is a generic name for naturally occurring compounds called tocotrienols and tocopherols. Cahoon looked at the pathway that leads to tocotrienols, something that had not been studied much. The scientists were able to isolate a gene for the enzyme homogentisic acid geranylgeranyl transferase. This enzyme is responsible for producing a tocotrienol form of vitamin E in cereal grains. When the gene was added to corn plants, the kernels' vitamin E content increased sixfold.

http://www.springforkfarms.com/
FARMING IN PIKE TOWNSHIP MADISON COUNTY, OHIO On the banks of the Spring Fork in Pike Township, amidst some of the prettiest crops in the county, Roger and Lila Stewart farm some 2000 acres assisted by their son, Danny, and grandson, Aaron Boerger. Their daughter, Lynne Whatley, Aaron's mother, works off the farm as does their granddaughter, Amanda Boerger Willett. Lila works on and off the family farm. On the farm she is bookkeeper with the farm records completely computerized and off the farm she is Pike Township Clerk. Roger, a native of Butler County, came north with his brother, Kenneth, when their children were young. As their sons grew up and started to farm, the partnership amicably dissolved so that each brother had his own farm. In 1979, Roger and Lila incorporated Spring Fork Farms, named for the adjacent creek, with Roger as manager. Son Danny, who graduated from Fairbanks High School in 1973, became assistant manager of the new corporation. About Us Search Contact Us Site Map
