The Perl Review: The roles of editors
The editorial process involves many steps and many different people who prepare an article for publication. The process is a pipeline along which editors assert different levels of quality control. This list is roughly in order of a typical editorial pipeline.
Acquisition Editors
Acquisition editors solicit articles from authors and help them develop the topic. Expectations of acquisition editors
  • identify interesting topics
  • solicit articles from potential authors
  • guide authors in the submission process
  • help authors identify the audience
  • help authors develop the abstract
  • pass article on to an article editor

Technical Editors Volunteer to be a technical editor (editors@theperlreview.com)
Regular technical editors get the article first and act as a filter. Before any other editing is done, the technical editors judge the ideas and concepts of the article. They may correct mistakes, point out additional technical points, illuminate sublties, and so on. They give the article editors their opinion on the merit of the topic and general worthiness of publication. Subject matter experts may serve as technical editors for specific articles.

Reporters generally know how to write. Copy editors generally know grammar, spelling and punctuation. But people in neither group got their necessarily jobs because they were good at math. Here is a primer for those editors and reporters facing deadline math.
  • To figure a percent, divide the small number by the larger and multiply by 100. For instance:

Those damn copy editors
Joke that was just sent my way (and only folks who have worked in newsrooms will really appreciate this): A reporter dies and goes to journalist heaven, where St. Peter issues him a harp and a set of moderate-sized wings. "These seem kind of small," the reporter complains. "Well," says St. Peter, "Wing size here is determined by how much abuse you suffered in your earthly life. See that guy with the butterfly-sized wings? He was a publisher. And the person with condor-sized wings? She was a night city editor." Just then a squadron of F-16s roars overhead, forcing the two to hit the dirt.
