(Off-Topic, the blog of what's on my mind as a troubled loner, is now at billwalsh.blogspot.com .) The blog format will allow me to sound off much more often than I've been able to recently, which may or may not be a good thing. It will also allow readers to comment on the entries. Which may or may not be a good thing. I f you must buy that book (you know what I'm talking about), at least use this link , which will get me a few pennies of kickback. It's not much of an instruction book, especially if you deal in American English, but it is entertaining as a rant. But there have been better rants over the past half a decade or so. S oon it will be hard to find an unsigned Bill Walsh book in the Washington area. In the closest thing to a book tour that I'm likely to get, I drove around the area, mostly in Northern Virginia, and volunteered to sign books. To my relief, "

The Lot of Journalism's Noble Misfits
C opy editors check written material, usually as the final step before it is set into type, to correct errors in grammar, spelling, usage and style (in this case, style refers to a given publication's guidelines for consistency in how words, phrases, typographical elements, etc., are to be used or not used). Copy editors are not proofreaders , although reading proofs is often part of the job description. The difference is that proofreaders (a job title that scarcely exists anymore) are charged with simply looking for typographical and mechanical errors on copy that has already been typeset. Proofreaders and, indeed, copy editors reading proofs are often criticized rather than praised for making picky changes at that stage in the process, whereas the same changes might well be applauded at the copy-editing stage. This is probably less true of copy editors in other fields, but newspaper copy editors are expected to be fully qualified journalists. Just as judges are lawyers, astronauts are pilots and FBI agents are cops, newspaper copy editors are reporters first. Many, probably most, of us have actual reporting experience, and those who don't are expected to at least have basic reporting skills. It used to be that copy editors were often burned-out (or even

Michael Howard exposed
Prompted by Jackie's remark that 'Michael Howard is as clean as a whistle, and anyone who goes digging to try to discern otherwise will come away very disappointed' - she had this on the authority of a prominent Tory and close friend of Howard's - I thought I might take up the challenge. After a period of wide-ranging and fearless research, in which I left no stone unturned, I'm afraid I have to tell you, Jackie, that I have come away far from disappointed. I have discovered this about Howard, that: His interests are catholic: he likes football (Liverpool is his team)... Well, I stopped my research right there, as any impartial scholar would. It did lead me to reflect, though. Will Howard's succession to the leadership mean that the Tories are only ten elections from power? Will it confirm that their best years are definitely behind them? Such were my thoughts during yesterday. Then, I'm watching BBC 2's Grumpy Old Men last night, and lo and behold John Peel - a Liverpool supporter he - is talking about hatred of Margaret Thatcher and hatred of Manchester United in the same breath; and he says (taken down in haste by me, so possibly not quite exact): All you've got left in life is to hate Manchester United because Liverpool aren't going to win anything.

9. So Long And Thanks For All The Links
Weblog for newspaper copy editors.
http://tommangan.net/printsthechaff/
Prints the Chaff is retired. Some of you probably saw this coming: Increasingly infrequent posts, taking three weeks off for three days' work, etc. Well, as Freddie Mercury once said, it's time to leave you all behind and face the truth. Which is, I don't want to do this anymore. It's taking too much time away from people and other stuff I care more about. And besides, the place I'm moving to has only dialup access, and daily blogging at 33k is madness. I'd rather do this right or not at all that is, post every day and give the topic the time it deserves, rather than let it whither or fade into irrelevance. Burnout vs. rust, as Neil Young would put it. I'll still post now and then to my personal page at tommangan.net look for photos of our new place in a couple weeks. The Banned for Life list my one lasting contribution to the world will survive. Blogging was fun till it started getting to be too much like work: scanning dozens of blogs and news sites every day for blogworthy posts, then thinking up something to say, then saying it, then correcting all my typos. Time spent blogging was not spent with books, music, movies, family, physical fitness (I gained 15 pounds because I had to give up my workouts to free up time to blog). Lately I had come to dread it. Dread's always a good sign it's time to move on. I can't let the moment pass, though, without crediting some of my favorite Web people.

Words About Words
To communicate about their work, copy editors use a number of terms that most people forgot after their last course in English composition (or maybe never knew at all). In addition to knowing how to make a poor sentence better, a copy editor has to be able to defend his or her decisions to writers, editors, and fellow copy editors. That means being able to talk the talk. This list also provides a good indication of the errors that copy editors commonly catch and correct.
antecedent
A word, phrase, or clause to which a pronoun refers, usually (but not always) one that precedes the pronoun.
Gary lives in the suburbs and commutes to his job in the city.
Gary's job is unpleasant because it requires that he deal with rude and surly people.
A possessive is not an appropriate antecedent:
Gary's job is a 45-minute commute from his home.
EDIT: Gary has a 45-minute commute to his job.
EDIT: Gary's job is a 45-minute commute from home.

A Bibliography for Copy Editors Last update: June 2, 2000 Melinda J. McAdams and may not be reproduced in any form for any reason. This is a U.S.-oriented list of reference books that I consider useful for copy editors and wordsmiths in general. You can buy most of them from Amazon.com, an online bookstore, by following the title links. I have used all these books, some of them extensively. An experienced copy editor (I was one, full-time, for eleven years) probably knows more about dictionaries than anyone else who isn't a professional lexicographer. I know we know more about grammar and usage than any English teacher alive, and if we don't know it, we know where to look it up.
