10th Grade Math/English
Lesson Plan Topic: Mathematicians and their Contributions
Lesson Plan Title: The Life and Works of a Famous Mathematician
Rationale and Goals:
By working together with their peers, students will practice compromising, listening to others, and sharing their own thoughts, which are important life skills. By seeing how two seemingly different subjects interconnect, students will develop a more holistic view of subject matter and begin making connections on their own. Students will enhance their creativity by writing an original script, and will gain appreciation for math concepts by examining the stories behind them. Behavioral Objectives:
Students will:
Cognitive:
* Recognize the contributions of mathematicians throughout history, and briefly explain their mathematical theories.
* Research the life of a mathematician.
Affective:
* Select an appropriate format to reflect the group's personality. * Connect the mathematician's contributions to his or her own life. Psychomotor: * Write and perform an original script.

They will be using a variety of research sources. OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to:

Grade Level: 4th grade
Objectives:
  • Students will learn that matter has measurable properties. Students will learn to use a balance and measure mass with standard units. Students will learn that in order to make a fair comparison of mass, you need to have equal amounts.
NY State Standards: Standard 4: The Physical Setting Key Idea Three-Matter is made up of properties whose particles determine the observable characteristics of matter and its reactivity. Every lesson plan that I create is in line with New York standards or national standards. This lesson also fit into the SCSD curriculum guidelines for fourth grade science. Materials -4 balances -gravel in zip-lock containers Putting the materials in the containers for each group made gathering the materials very easy. The use of plastic bags is another way to help organize materials. When materials are organized it starts the lesson off in the right way and clean up easier. -cornstarch in zip-lock containers -equal sized containers of rice and oatmeal -mystery substance -gram cubes -beakers Advanced Preparation Reminders: Get the four balances, put rice and oatmeal in zip-lock containers.
