Susan Johnson Lesson Plan Subject: Language Arts Lesson Plan Title: Poetry Co-op The lesson plan: Poetry Co-op Purpose: Cooperative learning techniques familiarize class with dozens of poems. Procedure: After lesson and test on poetic devices and figurative language, I assign each student one poem. I group the poems according to theme: love, death, war, nature, etc. Each group (4 or 5 in a group) discusses all the poems in their group to determine what theme they all have in common. They also must decide how each poet treats the theme differently and come up with reasons why. Then each group presents their poems and leads the class in a discussion. They are required to read their poems aloud and use some kind of visual aids. (One group wore berets and brought in real coffee for a coffeehouse setting.) After all groups are finished, each student writes a critical analysis of his/her poem. When finished, each student has studied his or her own poem in great depth, the poems in his/her group in some depth, and all the other poems in the class briefly.

Home Credits Student-Centered Learning Thematic Instruction ... Example Cognitive Lesson Example of a lesson plan of a theme-based student centered lesson using cooperative learning: Lesson plan for 3 rd year language class in high school. Objectives: Students will use a foreign language in context in cooperative groups to develop their communicative abilities. They will also develop problem-solving abilities through their interactions with group members. Goals: Students will solve a problem by communicating with their group members in a foreign language. Students will focus more on the content of their discussions and less on the language, and as a result, they will learn how to use language to fulfill their needs. They will come to see, first hand, the usefulness of lanugage. Materials: Problem sheet, broken up into individual facts than can be distributed to group members (written in the foreign language, not in English). Activities: 1. The class is broken into groups of 5.

Home Credits Student-Centered Learning Thematic Instruction ... Example Cognitive Lesson Cooperative Learning What is cooperative learning? Cooperative learning, also called collaborative learning, occurs whenever students interact in pairs or groups to share knowledge and experiences. All activities in which students work together towards a common goal, from interacting with daily partners to completing long term projects with learning communities, are cooperative learning activities. How does cooperative learning fit in with other elements of an effective classroom? Student-Centered: Cooperative activities pair students together or place them within groups, allowing each individual student more time and opportunities to participate in the classroom discourse. Thematic Instruction: Active Learning: Cooperative activities naturally get students up and interacting with their environment. Cognitive Apprenticeship: Paired and group activities offer excellent opportunities for teachers to model specific methods or behaviors for their students.

Lesson Plan Format

Lesson plans for cooperative groups are often typed on one page for each hour session. They show exactly what goals you are after (stated in clear, specific performance objectives) and identify what specifically students will do in the cooperative groups to achieve that goal. You will want to know if students really learned the material, so the key is to relate each component to a set of clear, observable objectives. Using consistent lesson plan formats for each of the cooperative-learning lessons can help ensure that the student groups really learn the material well.
Lesson plans for cooperative groups typically include:
Unit title

The title is usually the umbrella topic (e.g., "Graphs").
Overall question
Identify one overall unit question on each lesson plan (in the graph example, "How can graphs help me to defend my position?"). Related lesson question This should frame each specific lesson and relate to the overall unit question listed. Learning standard addressed Find and list specific state, local, or national standards.

What do cooperative lesson plans look like?

There are things common to successful cooperative lessons at any age level. Let's look at what they are.
If you are guided by specific standards for your area or state, you will want to identify one standard you plan to address in each lesson through group learning.
Once you identify an external goal or guiding statement, you are ready to create lessons. We will use examples from a series of lessons for a unit on the Inuit people for grades 6 - 8.
We'll start with a five-phase process to guide lesson-plan creation. It will help ensure that students collaborate and remain actively involved.
The five phases for the teacher are:
Ask a question Identify specific lesson goals Create a rubric (possibly with students) to guide learning. Assign an assessment task Reflect to adjust.
The question is devised by examining the standard or curricular objective you wish to reach or convey. A good question will engage students and encourage discussion and idea sharing. The lesson goals are often expressed as tasks that the learner will do or learn to do. The

Lesson Plan Overview
In response to requests by Georgia Educators, an online data bank of lesson plans connected to QCC standards is being developed by classroom teachers using specific criteria. Multiple collections of lesson plans are included: Department of Education Curriculum Guides, InTech lesson plans, and individual Georgia teacher lesson plans. Unit plans are also available. Teacher and student worksheets and teaching materials for the lesson are included with the plans. Lesson plans can be accessed by using the QCC Search.
Additional collections of lesson plans connected to the QCC standards will be included on this site as they become available. Georgia teachers are encouraged to submit their best lesson plan or unit plan to be included on the GLC site for replication by other teachers. A method for submitting your lesson plans will be available shortly.

Unit Overview
This unit includes four lessons using primary sources to examine continuity and change in the governing of the United States. Lessons one and two are focused on a study of the Constitution and Bill of Rights and provide access to primary source documents from the Library of Congress. Lesson three investigates important issues which confronted the first Congress and has students examine current congressional debate over similar issues. Lesson four features broadsides from the Continental Congress calling for special days of thanksgiving and remembrance. The first three lessons are intended for middle and high school students. Lesson four provides a historical context for elementary school lessons that focus on celebrating national holidays. The unit also includes extension activities for each lesson which may be developed as classroom activities or individual research projects. The lessons do not prescribe specific teaching methods. The primary source documents along with suggested focus questions may be used in a variety of ways, including Socratic seminars, cooperative learning, or individual or group work.
