    VERMONT'S BRIGADOON
It was here that vacationing Vice President Calvin Coolidge received an urgent message from Washington D.C. informing him of the death of President Warren Harding. Coolidge was immediately sworn in as the 30th President of the United States by his father, a Notary Public. Unique in American history, this event occurred by the light of a kerosene lamp in the old family homestead on August 3, 1923 at 2:47 a.m. The birthplace of the 30th President is a nearly perfect example of an early 20th century
Vermont hill town. Plymouth Notch , Vermont, the birthplace and boyhood home of Calvin Coolidge, remains virtually unchanged since the early twentieth century. Even during the Roaring Twenties, its rural simplicity appealed to scandal-weary Americans. The homes of Calvin Coolidge's family and neighbors, the community church, cheese factory, one-room schoolhouse, and general store have been carefully preserved, and many buildings have their original furnishings. The President is buried in the town cemetery with seven generations of Coolidge s. Visitors are sometimes surprised that a president should be buried in such plain surroundings, but when Coolidge left the White House, he said, "We draw our Presidents from the people...I came from them. I wish to be one of them again."

More recreation plus sightseeing, theater, shopping and restaurants in area. White Pine Camp is one of the Adirondack Park's most outstanding "Great Camps" - rustic yet elegant retreats built by wealthy families at the turn of the century. Built in 1907 and expanded in 1911 by William Massarene and Addison Mizner, White Pine Camp is unique in its "pre-modern" yet rustic architectural style, extensive landscaping, and interesting history. It was owned by a number of prominent families and served as President Calvin Coolidge's Summer White House from July 7-September 18, 1926. From 1949 to 1983, under institutional ownership, the camp experienced serious abuse and neglect, then a 10-year holding action. Recently purchased by a private group, the camp is now mostly restored and open to the public for cabin rentals, historic tours, and special events.

      John Calvin Coolidge Born: Birthplace:
Plymouth, Vt. (John) Calvin Coolidge was born in Plymouth, Vt., on July 4, 1872. An Amherst graduate, he went into law practice at Northampton, Mass., in 1897. He married Grace Anna Goodhue in 1905. He entered Republican state politics, becoming successively mayor of Northampton, state senator, lieutenant governor and, in 1919, governor. His use of the state militia to end the Boston police strike in 1919 won him a somewhat undeserved reputation for decisive action and brought him the Republican vice-presidential nomination in 1920. After Harding's death Coolidge handled the Washington scandals with care and finally managed to save the Republican Party from public blame for the widespread corruption. In 1924, Coolidge was elected without difficulty, defeating the Democrat, John W. Davis, and Robert M. La Follette running on the Progressive ticket. His second term, like his first, was characterized by a general satisfaction with the existing economic order. He stated that he did not choose to run in 1928.

After learning of his ascendancy to President on the death of Warren Harding in 1923, Coolidge was sworn in by his father, a justice of the peace, and promptly went back to bed. Calvin Coolidge was born on Independence Day, 1872, and raised in Plymouth Notch, Vermont. His father was a pillar of the community, holding a variety of local offices from tax collector to constable. From him, Coolidge inherited his taciturn nature, his frugality, and his commitment to public service. The early death of his mother and sister also contributed to his somber public image.

The Coolidge Homestead by Mimi Baird [click on photographs to see larger versions] T he Coolidge Homestead is an important component of the activities of the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation. It is also the centerpiece of the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site in Plymouth . The house was the setting for many significant events that affected the life and times of Calvin Coolidge. He moved there when he was four. T he character of young Coolidge was formed in this house. The shyness that followed him over the years became apparent. He would enter the house after completing a chore and, upon hearing the voices in the kitchen, would immediately dread having to meet people and engage in conversation. Wrenching sadness entered Calvin’s life at 12, when his mother, Victoria Josephine Moor, age 39, died in March of 1885. Calvin, his father, Col. John Coolidge, and sister Abigail were at her bedside. "The greatest grief that can come to a boy came to me. Life was never to seem the same again." O n March 6, 1890, at the Homestead, while Calvin was at Black River Academy in Ludlow, his sister, Abigail, 14, also died. "I am having a very good time this spring but will be glad when I can go home and be with you. It is lonesome here without Abbie."

Coolidge attended a one-room school until he entered Black River Academy at 13. He graduated with honors from Amherst College in Massachusetts, decided to become a lawyer and passed the bar examination in less than two years. His Presidency: As president during the roaring 20s, Coolidge was a symbol of prosperity. He was thrifty, conservative regarding economics, and had common sense which people admired. He was not very interested in foreign affairs, but took measures to protect American interest in Nicaragua and improve relations with Mexico. His Life: At 2:30 on the morning of August 3, 1923, while visiting in Vermont, Calvin Coolidge received word that he was President. By the light of a kerosene lamp, his father, who was a notary public, administered the oath of office as Coolidge placed his hand on the family Bible.

Served as president from 1923 to 1929 Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933), was a shy, silent New England Republican who led the United States during the boisterous Jazz Age of the 1920's. He was the sixth vice president to become president upon the death of a chief executive. Coolidge was vacationing on his father's farm in Vermont when President Warren G. Harding died in 1923. The elder Coolidge, a notary public, administered the oath of office in the dining room. Never before had this ceremony been performed by such a minor official or by a president's father.
In 1924, Coolidge was elected to a full four-year term. He enjoyed great popularity and probably could have been reelected. But he decided to retire. His terse announcement became his most famous statement: "I do not choose to run for president in 1928." Herbert Hoover succeeded him.
Americans respected the views of the close-mouthed Coolidge. His reputation for wisdom was based on his common sense and dry wit. He issued few unnecessary public statements and rarely wasted a word.
