Coolidge was one of two Presidents born in Vermont. During the Garfield-Hancock campaign of 1880, he asked his father for a penny to buy candy. John Coolidge refused, explaining that if the Democrats should be elected, hard times could be expected. After Garfield won, Calvin reminded his father that the Republicans had stayed in power. He got the penny.
On August 2, 1923, Coolidge was vacationing at his father's home in Plymouth, Vermont. It took several hours for the news of President Harding's death in California to reach the small town. Traditionally, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court swears in the president, but he was 500 miles away. So at 2:30 a.m., Coolidge's father, a notary republic, administered the oath of office to his son by the light of a kerosene lamp. Called "Silent Cal," Coolidge was once challenged by a reporter, saying, "I bet someone that I could get more than two words out of you." Coolidge responded, "You lose." He was the first president to have his inauguration heard on the radio and the first president to make a radio broadcast. The first presidential political speech on the radio originated from New York City and was broadcast on 5 radio stations. An audience estimated to be about 5 million people listened in to hear Coolidge speak.

    • President Arthur signed the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. It broke the Treaty of 1880 with China which allowed Chinese immigrants to enter the U.S. While the Chinese Exclusion Act did halt immigration for 10 years and kept already immigrated Chinese from becoming citizens, Arthur had already vetoed a bill which would have banned any Chinese immigration for 20 years. In 1883 Buffalo Bill, who had become famous hunting buffalo to feed the crews who were laying track for the Transcontinental Railroad by the Union Pacific, organized the first of his wild west shows. These shows featured sharpshooter Annie Oakley and Sioux chief Sitting Bull. In 1883 President Arthur signed the Pendleton Act. This act reformed civil service, which was believed to be filled with politically connected individuals who didn’t really do any work. The Pendelton Act created exams for government jobs. It also created a Civil Service Commission to oversee the new competitive merit system. Chester Alan Arthur - portrait and biographical information at the White House web site.

Citation awarding the Medal of Honor to Commander Richard E. Byrd for his participation in first flight over the North Pole Courtesy of: National Archives and Records Administration JOHN CALVIN COOLIDGE was born July 4, 1872 in Plymouth Notch, Vermont. He was the only son of John Calvin Coolidge, a jack-of-all-trades, teacher, storekeeper, farmer, politician, and even mechanic when necessary and Victoria Josephine Moor, a handsome woman who loved poetry and natural beauty, who died when Calvin was 12. The Coolidges lived in the rear of the combined general store and post office, and young Coolidge attended the local school. He was later enrolled in the Black River Academy in Ludlow, Vermont and in 1891, attended Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts, being the first of the Vermont Coolidges to attend college. Following his graduation cum laude from Amherst in 1895, Coolidge read law in the offices of John Hammond and Henry Field in Northampton, Mass. Two years later he was admitted to the bar. He decided to practice law in Northampton, and although he never prospered as an attorney, he was able to earn enough to become financially independent in a short time. On October 4, 1905 Coolidge married Grace Anna Goodhue from Vermont, who taught at the Clarke Institute for the Deaf in Northampton. Vivacious, witty, and friendly, with a pleasant smile, she was the opposite of her quiet husband. They had two sons, John Coolidge (1906 - ) and Calvin Coolidge, Jr. (1908 – 1924).

Unless the people believe in these principles they cannot believe in our government. There are only two main theories of government in the world. One rests on righteousness, the other rests on force. One appeals to reason, the other appeals to the sword. One is exemplified in a republic, the other is represented by a despotism." speech at the unveiling of the equestrian statue of Bishop Francis Asbury, 15 October 1924 "But if we wish to continue to be distinctively American, we must continue to make that term comprehensive enough to embrace the legitimate desires of a civilized and enlightened people determined in all their relations to pursue a conscientious and religious life." Inaugural Address, 4 March 1925 "The fundamental precept of liberty is toleration. We can not permit any inquisition either within or without the law or apply any religious test to the holding of office. The mind of America must be forever free." Inaugural Address, 4 March 1925

If the Vice-President is a man of discretion and character so that he can be relied upon to act as a subordinate in that position, he should be invited to sit with the Cabinet, although some of the Senators, wishing to be the only advisers of the President, do not look on that proposal with favor.
—Calvin Coolidge Calvin Coolidge Babylon Youth Calvin Coolidge grew up in the bucolic setting of rural Vermont in the late nineteenth century. He was a slight, red-headed, blue-eyed boy whose decided nasal twang was made worse by numerous childhood allergies until it gave his voice a quacking sound. His invalid mother died when he was just twelve years old, and he was raised by his father, Colonel John Coolidge, a talented jack-of-all-trades, who ran a general store and farmed, as well as serving as justice of the peace and a member of the state legislature. For all these accomplishments, Colonel Coolidge was not a man who could express his emotions openly, and one senses from reading Calvin Coolidge's Autobiography that he spent much of his life trying to earn his father's respect and approval. As Coolidge later noted, "A lot of people in Plymouth can't understand how I got to be President, least of all my

    COOLIDGE, CALVIN
, thirtieth president of the United States. Coolidge presided over an era of governmental frugality and probusiness policies that were popular at the time but later regarded as misconceived. Born in Plymouth Notch, Vermont, Coolidge graduated from Amherst College in 1895 and three years later established a law practice in Northampton, Massachusetts. A conservative Republican, he rose rapidly in politics, serving successively as city councillor and solicitor (1899-1902), state legislator (1907-1909), mayor (1910-1911), state senator (1912-1915), lieutenant governor (1916-1918), and governor (1919-1921). In 1919 he gained national prominence by intervening to restore order during a Boston police strike and in 1920 was the surprise nominee of his party for vice president. Coolidge was noted for his cautious reserve, public taciturnity, and pronounced frugality, but he was also a competent administrator, a skillful manipulator of the media, and a man devoted to career and family. In 1927 Coolidge announced that he would not run for president again, and in March 1929 he returned to Northampton. There he busied himself with writing his autobiography and a daily newspaper column entitled "Thinking Things over with Calvin Coolidge."
