Pacific Explorers Library Captain James Cook (by Michael Dickinson) In 1768 Lieutenant James Cook, RN, set sail in Endeavour on a voyage of exploration and scientific investigation. After observing the transit of Venus across the sun at Otaheite in the Pacific, Cook sailed south-west to disprove or otherwise the existence of a 'Great South Land'. By 1770 Cook had reached New Zealand. He circumnavigated and completely charted the north and south islands before continuing west. In April, he sighted the east coast of New Holland (now called Australia) and sailed north along the coast before anchoring in what he named Botany Bay. He then continued north to Cape York and on to Batavia in the then Dutch East Indies (Jakarta, Indonesia). During the four months voyage along the coast Cook charted the coastline from Point Hicks (Victoria) to Cape York (Queensland) and proclaimed the eastern part of the continent for Great Britain. Cook was not the first person nor even the first European to 'discover' Australia, but he was the first to accurately chart a substantial part of the coastline and to fix the continent in relation to known waters. His explorations have also been given significance because, due to a variety of circumstances, they were followed up within a few years by a British expedition to settle the 'new' continent. For these reasons, Cook is considered a major figure in Australia's modern history. Numerous places in Australasia, particularly on the east Australian coast and New Zealand, have been named after him or his vessel, and many of the names he gave to parts of the Australian east coast in 1770 are still used (eg Cape Tribulation, Botany Bay, the Whitsunday's).

Explorers of the Millennium
Our web site, "Explorers of the Millennium," will provide students with a wealth of information about the most important explorers of the past thousand years in a simple, easy-to-use format. We included reports on nineteen explorers, chosen by members of our team. We organized the explorers on separate "Hall of Fame" and "Timeline" web pages, so that users can look for a particular explorer by name or by century. We have a links page to help students find other helpful Web sites that relate to the explorers selected. A quiz section gives visitors a chance to see what they know about some of our explorers. A feedback page invites visitors to submit their own nominations for our Explorers' Hall of Fame. We hope that a visit to "Explorers of the Millennium" will answer students' questions about explorers, lead them to new sources of information, and encourage them to think critically about which explorers were the "greatest" and why. Welcome to Great Ayton, Captain Cook's boyhood home
For more information, visit the Captain Cook Country website Captain Cook Country, named in honour of Britain's greatest seafarer and explorer, stretches from his birthplace in Marton, through his childhood home of Great Ayton to Whitby where he went to sea.
Captain James Cook RN FRS 1728 - 1779
James was born in Marton, now part of Middlesbrough, on 27th October 1728. After leaving Great Ayton in 1745, he travelled to Staithes where he worked as a draper's assistant. He soon journeyed to Whitby and was apprenticed to the Walkers, working on their coal vessels plying up and down the east coast. In 1755 he joined the Royal Navy and so began an illustrious career as explorer, navigator and scientist. His three voyages of exploration on the Endeavour and Resolution charted previously unknown lands and discovered thousands of plant species. James died in Hawaii on 14th February 1779 when he was attacked by natives. He was buried at sea.
This is a land of legend, natural beauty, religious and maritime heritage mixed with a modern shopping experience at Middlesbrough's four indoor shopping centres. Coastal walks, forest trails, market towns and seaside resorts offer activities to suit the most discerning visitor. The area wide Captain Cook Festival held in late October is an annual celebration of both maritime culture and music and is great family fun.

In my opinion, to be a great explorer doesn't have to mean that you have take big ventures as climbing high mountains without oxygen, flying in a air balloon and take other risky acrobatic stunts.
Of course I am "extremely" impressed by people who have achieved such fantastic performances. But our life and universe have to be seen in a wider view than this. In my terms, explorations means penetration of new geographical areas, getting in contact with indigenous people for the first time, experience unknown languages and ancient cultures, and do scientific researches on animals, plant life and the space.

Captain Cook (1728-79)
Captain Cook is arguably the most famous explorer of Australia. He was born in Marton, England and spent several years working for a shipbuilding firm before enlisting in the navy in 1755. Between 1756 and 1767 Cook set about charting the North Atlantic coastal waters off Newfoundland and Nova Scotia and the Saint Lawrence River.

In 1741 he discovered Alaska and traded with the First Nations peoples, collecting large numbers of sea otter pelts which could be sold for very high prices in China. For this reason Russia established trading posts in Alaska. Alaska remained Russian territory until it was sold to the United States in 1867. View one of Bering's charts [51K]
Captain James Cook 1728-1779
Cook's early training as an apprentice, seaman, and Master's Mate with a Whitby coal shipping company provided him with solid experience for assuming the responsibilities of captain in the merchant navy. However, in 1755 Cook chose to volunteer for the Royal Navy as an able seaman. Why he chose to take on a lower position and endure the poor conditions and low pay is not clear, but perhaps he preferred the opportunities the Royal Navy offered in the area of exploration.

James Cook; explorer and scientist. Extract from 1775 portrait by Nathaniel Dance These stunning geographic achievements would alone be sufficient to give Cook a high place in any millennial hall of fame. But Cook was far more than an explorer. He was a scientist, an observer, and a man of great humanity and compassion. Bounty . He epitomised the philosophy of leadership implicit in Francis Drake’s dictum "have the gentleman to haul and draw with the mariner". Cook asked nothing of his men that he was unwilling or unable to do himself. He led from the front, and insisted that his officers did so too. Over matters to do with health and hygiene he was uncompromising. Perhaps the best illustration of this is in his insistence that the seamen should eat sauerkraut as part of a varied diet to ward off scurvy. Because of its unpleasant odour, the men were unwilling to eat sauerkraut. Rather than punishing those who would not accept the sauerkraut, Cook insisted on the officers eating it, and treating it as a great delicacy. The men were persuaded by their officers’ example, and sauerkraut became a part of their regular diet.

Introduction
Captain James Cook was the most prominent of the explorers of the Pacific. He discovered many Pacific Islands and was the first European to explore Australia's east coast. In one of his journals, Captain Cook wrote that his goal was to go 'farther than any other man has been before me and as far as I think it possible for a man to go.' (Doesn't this sound like Star Trek?!) Come join our treasure hunt and find out more about this interesting explorer.

While exploring the world, Cook also explored ways to keep his crew from dying of the shipboard diseases of the day.
by Clarice Robinson Cox Before the epic voyages of Capt. James Cook, the British Admiralty routinely signed on twice the number of sailors needed for a voyage, expecting half to die en route. Those expectations were all too often realized. Cook helped change that. He pioneered clean decks, drier quarters, warmer clothes and a better diet. His journals give the facts. They show he forced a radical new diet on his crew. Fresh onions were just the beginning. "We had besides many articles such as malt, sauerkraut, salted cabbage, potable broth, saloup, mustard, marmalade of carrots and inspissated juice of wort and beer," wrote Cook in his log. Lots of vitamins, right? He even took strange grasses and foods to try en route. The men hated the stuff, longing for the familiar diet of salt beef and hard tack (weevils and all), but Cook told his men, eat this or else ... and the convincer was a lashing. Tough cookie, Cook, but at the end of his first important trip, he was able to write, "For the first time in recorded history of a long sea voyage, not one man was lost from scurvy." Not only the diet was unusual. Cleanliness was as rare as Godliness on other ships. Decks were customarily painted red, the better not to show blood and dirt, but Cook insisted on constant scouring. The hold on these ships invariably stank. He ordered The Endeavor's hold ventilated or at least dried out somewhat by fire in an iron pot. A bit of gun powder was touched off now and then to vary the stench. Hazardous smoke? Cook felt it purified the air. Who could argue?
