Cook, James
British explorer and navigator
Popularly known as "Captain Cook," James Cook was a legendary explorer whose epic voyages prompted the Royal Navy to dub him a man of "genius and capacity."
The son of a Yorkshire farmhand, he was apprenticed to a shipowner at age 18 and worked on coalboats in the North Sea. In 1755 he joined the Royal Navy, and was quickly promoted to become a master.
The first of his great Pacific voyages was a scientific expedition on which he became the first person to chart New Zealand and the east coast of Australia. On later voyages he sailed along the edge of Antarctica, proving that a speculated southern continent existed only as an ice mass, and crossed the Antarctic Circle.
He also discovered several Pacific island groups, and searched for a northeast passage between the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans.
Cook set new standards of health and lost few of his crew; he brought a scientific approach into exploration; most of all, he changed the map of the world. Killed by natives in Hawaii, his explorations led the way for the colonization of the Pacific.

Captain James Cook by Michele K. My report is on Captain James Cook. First, I will tell you facts about his life. Then I will tell you about his explorations. After that, I will tell you of the dangers he faced. Next, I will tell you why Captain James Cook should win the "Explorer of the Century" award. Finally, I will discuss me as an explorer. Captain Cook had an exciting life! Captain Cook was born on October 27, 1728, in Yorkshire, England. He was the son of a farm worker. In 1775, he joined the British Royal Navy. He was an expert navigator! After only two years in the navy, the British government chose him to be a captain for an expedition. He also helped map Quebec. Captain Cook made three voyages. The purpose of the first voyage was to observe the transit of Venus and to discover "Australia". The transit of Venus is when the Earth and Venus are exactly lined up, like an eclipse. During the second part of this voyage, Captain Cook became the first European to see Australia. He named the east coast of Australia "New South Wales" and claimed it for Britain. The aim of the second voyage was to determine whether there was a south continent (Antarctica). He did his by sailing as far south as possible. He made the first recorded crossing of the Antarctic Circle in January, 1773. On his third voyage, Cook and his crew were the first Europeans to sight the Hawaiian Islands. Even though Cook was protective of his crew, they still faced many dangers, At that time, there was no communication between ships and land. Once a person was at sea, that person had great risk of getting lost. A second danger Cook faced was when he was at the Hawaiian islands. Some of Cook's crew were killed and used for food by islanders, and Cook was killed by an islander. Also, Cook was exploring unknown territory and did not know what to expect. Those were some of the dangers Captain Cook faced.

The Voyages of Captain James Cook
Captain James Cook may well be the founder of modern oceanography. His list of accomplishments are staggering, the range of his voyages, most impressive. Not only was he a master seaman, skilled navigator, accomplished cartographer, eloquent writer, fine artist, respected diplomat and clever dietician (another example of oceanography's far-reaching subject areas), he was a brave leader and careful scientist. (I wouldn't mind those credits..!) Perhaps more than any other explorer or oceanographer in history, Cook laid the foundations for our scientific understanding of the seas. Only a little is known of Cook's developmental years. He was born in the Yorkshire Village of Marton on October 27, 1728, to parents of modest means. They soon moved to Ayton and, as was common in those days, James was apprenticed (i.e. indentured) to a store-keeper, for whom he worked for about year and a half. But ever an ambitious lad, and undoubtedly influenced by the salty pub-side tales of sailors from a nearby harbor, he soon ran away to Whitby, a small port some thirteen miles from Ayton, and offered his services to the mate of a coal fleet. Charmed by his enthusiasm, he was hired aboard and thus began his career as a man of the sea, a sailor. Cook worked his way up the ranks and apparently studied astronomy, mathematics and map-making on his own. During the Seven Years war between England and France, Cook was sent to the St. Lawrence Seaway aboard the king's ship, Mercury, where he endeavored to map the waterway in between battles with the French in Quebec and the occasional Indian. Having already earned his Master's (Captain's) Certificate and having demonstrated his skills at cartography, he was the Captain of choice for the Queen's mission to show the British flag on a voyage to Tahiti with members of the Royal Society, who were to observe the transit of Venus across the sun (as good a reason for a voyage as any, I guess!).

By the end of the 17th century, the coastlines of Newfoundland and Labrador were generally known but imperfectly mapped. However, European knowledge of the interior, both of the island and of Labrador, was very limited. During the 18th century, the coastlines became known more accurately and in greater detail, and there were some initial probes inland. At the end of the Seven Years' War in 1763, Britain found itself in control of northeastern America, including what had been New France. A part of the process of taking control of these territories, the British government instituted a series of surveys. So far as Newfoundland was concerned, the authorities were concerned to delineate as accurately as possible the areas where the French could still fish - the French Treaty Shore between Cape Bonavista and Point Riche, and the waters around St. Pierre and Miquelon, which had been ceded to France in 1763 as a fishing base. In 1763, therefore, James Cook RN (1728-1779) was appointed marine surveyor. James Cook From James Cook, The Circumnavigator

He commanded the Mercury in , which he sailed to Canada and up the St. Lawrence River. In , he led a number of surveying missions on the coast of Labrador, Newfoundland, and Nova Scotia. Cook was long interested in astronomy , publishing some of his findings in the Transactions of the Royal Society . In the Society called on him to lead a voyage to Tahiti to establish an astronomical observatory, since the southern hemisphere would allow a better view of the planet Venus. Cook was accompanied on the exhibition by several botanists, including Sir Joseph Banks In he arrived in the terra australis incognita , the "unknown land in the south," now known as Australia. There he continued his scientific research. The wealth of plant species his team discovered led him to name his point of landing Botany Bay . He returned to England in . After another successful expedition to the South Pacific, he was elected to the Royal Society In , Cook set off on his last voyage, on which he discovered Christmas Island and the Hawaiian islands (which he called the Sandwich Islands). JAMES COOK
COOK, JAMES (1728-1779), English naval captain and explorer, was born on the 28th of October 1728, at Marton village, Cleveland, Yorkshire, where his father was first an agricultural laborer and then a farm bailiff. At twelve years of age he was apprenticed to a haberdasher at Staithes, near Whitby, and afterwards to Messrs Walker, shipowners, of Whitby, whom he served for years in the Norway, Baltic and Newcastle trades. The discoverer reached Plymouth on the 25th of July 1775, and his achievements were promptly, if meanly, rewarded. He was immediately raised to the rank of post-captain, appointed a captain in Greenwich hospital, and soon afterwards unanimously elected a member of the Royal Society, from which he received the Copley gold medal for the best experimental paper which had appeared during the year. Had Cook returned from his third voyage, there is ground for believing King George would have made him a baronet. Distinguished honors were paid to his memory, both at home and by foreign courts, and a pension was settled upon his widow. But in his life a very inadequate share of official, reward was dealt out to the man who not only may be placed first among British maritime discoverers, but also gave his country her title, and so her colonies, in Australasia. As a commander, an observer and a practical physician, his merits were equally great. Reference has been made to his survey work and to his victory over scurvy; it must not be forgotten thatalong with a commanding personal presence, and with sagacity, decision and perseverance quite extraordinary, went other qualities not less useful to his work. He won the affection of those who served under him by sympathy, kindness and unselfish care of others as noteworthy as his gifts of intellect.
