Geography and Economy
by Guidez.net (source: CIA WorldFactBook)
Named after Captain Cook, who sighted them in 1770, the islands became a British protectorate in 1888. By 1900, administrative control was transferred to New Zealand; in 1965 residents chose self-government in free association with New Zealand. The emigration of skilled workers to New Zealand and government deficits are continuing problems.
Location: Oceania, group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean, about one-half of the way from Hawaii to New Zealand
Climate: tropical; moderated by trade winds
Terrain: low coral atolls in north; volcanic, hilly islands in south Natural hazards: typhoons (November to March) Like many other South Pacific island nations, the Cook Islands' economic development is hindered by the isolation of the country from foreign markets, lack of natural resources, periodic devastation from natural disasters, and inadequate infrastructure. Agriculture provides the economic base with major exports made up of copra and citrus fruit. Manufacturing activities are limited to fruit-processing, clothing, and handicrafts. Trade deficits are made up for by remittances from emigrants and by foreign aid, overwhelmingly from New Zealand. Efforts to exploit tourism potential, encourage offshore banking, and expand the mining and fishing industries have been partially successful in stimulating investment and growth.

Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java(tm). Volunteer in the glorious isolation of the South Pacific Ocean... working on a variety of community development projects alongside islanders. Historically self-reliant, modern-day Cook Islanders' resiliency and natural resourcefulness are challenged by new realities: distant foreign markets, lack of natural resources, periodic natural disasters, and inadequate infrastructure. Work one-on-one with
youth, seniors and families striving to improve their futures on education, social service and conservation projects!
"It is at this level, when people from very different cultures mix and share experiences... that true harmony and understanding can develop."
~ Patricia Numa, Cook Islands Ministry of Education
Cook Islands Volunteer Program Dates

On Oct. 12 - Nov. 12, 2004, the Tivaevae Exhibition will be held on the island.
This is a great way to experience this historic quilting artform in the land of its origin! Cook Islands Volunteer Work Projects There are a number of ways you can help restore the Cook Islands' vitality. The Cook Islands Ministry of Health and several local organizations invited Global Volunteers to the main island of Rarotonga to bolster educational, health-care, environmental and cultural services. Following are some work projects that are usually available. While we always ask our volunteers to be flexible, those serving on Rarotonga must be especially so, due to the wide range of projects.

You can stroll along beaches edged with swaying palms and swim in warm lagoons protected by coral reefs. The islands are divided naturally into two groups. The eight islands of the southern Cooks include the destinations of Rarotonga and Aitutaki. The Cook Island group was named after Captain James Cook, who sighted the Manua atoll (Hervey Island) in 1773.. The ill fated Captain William Bligh sighted Aitutaki in 1789, and mutineer Fletcher Christian, Rarotonga, on the same boat (the Bounty), shortly after the famous mutiny on April 28.1789. Aitutaki is the second most visited of the magical Cook Islands and is recommended as a "must see"extension to your Rarotonga holidays. Atiu is a fascinating island riddled with caves and surrounded with raised coral cliffs and white sand beaches. Mangaia is the southernmost island of the Cook group and is also surrounded by coral cliffs with an interior of several swamps and a small lake. Limestone and volcanic samples on the island date back eighteen million years.
