The Cook Islanders are Polynesians, people of the 'many' (poly) islands of the South Pacific. They are Maori people, distantly related to the New Zealand Maori. Over 90% of the population is Polynesian, with small minorities of Europeans, New Zealanders, Fijians, Indians and Chinese.

On the afternoon of April 29, 2004, President Hu Jintao met with the Cook Islands' Prime Minister Hon.Dr.Robert Woonton at the Great Hall of the People. Hu said that China and Cook Islands, though separated by vast oceans and different in historical backgrounds and cultural traditions, have maintained good relations. Just as a Chinese saying goes, "if you have a friend who knows your heart, distance can't keep you two apart". In recent years, with the joint efforts by the two sides, China and Cook Islands have achieved remarkable results in exchanges and cooperation in such fields as economy and trade, agriculture and culture, and have maintained good communication and coordination in international and regional affairs. China appreciates and thanks the government of Cook Islands for its resolute adherence to the one-China policy and its support for China's just position on issues involving Taiwan in the South Pacific region.

Contacts Home ... Places Making like a washing machine in the Cook Islands By Jonathan Harwood , our South Seas correspondent. Send this article to a friend Printer friendly version 24 December 2003 The Cook Islands may not be able to boast that they lead the world in many things – but when it comes to dancing they are top of the pile. Like the rest of Polynesia, the islands have an oral tradition with legends and learning passed down the generations through dances and songs rather than dusty old library books, and even now memorable events like cyclones prompt a new spate of routines. Almost everyone here dances or sings and when the limbs can’t take the pace any more the dancers generally pick up an instrument, maybe a coconut shell ukulele or one of the intimidating array of slit drums that create a wall of sound Phil Spector would kill for. Add to that the close harmony singing, which entices even the most cynical atheists to church on a Sunday morning, and it is clear that the Cook Islands is a nation blessed with a vibrant musical pedigree. For someone more used to traditional English dancing performed by men armed with bells, hankies and sticks, and where mass sing-a-longs tend to question footballers’ parentage, the contrast is stark.

The island is 20 miles in circumference with a population of 9,678. It's a magical place. The island is lush green, with a dense tropical rain forest in the center on rising mountain peaks. Flat coastal land is covered with tropical trees and flowers. It is perfect for cycling and you can travel around the island in approximatley 2 hours at a leisurely pace. The island's interior provides interesting hiking trails through the lush jungle.
Avarua is an attractive town strung along the north coast beneath the green, misty slopes of Maungatea and retains the air of a 19th century South Seas trading post. Off shore, the rusting hull of the Yankee lies on the reef where it was beached in 1964 when the wind shifted while the charter crew and a group of tourists partied with bar girls below. Farther out is the engine of the SS Maitai, wrecked in 1916. It was carrying a shipment of Model T's bound for New Zealand. Click Here For Larger Map Two roads circle Rarotonga: the new coastal road and the old inland road, the Are Metua. Try going around the Ara Metua by rental car, bicycle or by foot. Along the way you'll pass lush gardens, paw paw plantations, orchards, good viewpoints and smiling people. This inner road is said to be the oldest in Polynesia.
