HISTORY AND SETTLEMENT The first settlers to the Cook Islands were Polynesians who arrived about 800AD from Raiatea, in what is now French Polynesia. They came in great double hulled canoes, navigating by using familiar stars and wave movements and temperature. These colonizers were believed to have been the last wave of the Polynesian Migration from Asia that began in 1500BC. Pukapuka in the north was the first island discovered by Europeans, sighted by the Spaniard Captain Alvaro de Mendana on August 20, 1595. Another Spaniard, Captain Pedro Fernandez de Quiros on March 2, 1606, stopped for provisions at Rakahanga. There was no further European contact for over 150 years until the voyages of Captain James Cook of the British Admiralty, for whom the 15 island group was eventually named. But despite being the namesake of the group, Captain James Cook noted in his diaries that he personally went ashore only on uninhabited Palmerston Island. The Cook Islands was named Hervey's Isles after a Lord of the Admiralty until 1824, when the Russian cartographer Von Krusentstern changed the name to honor James Cook, who had been killed in Hawaii in 1779. The famed Reverend John Williams of the London Missionary Society landed in Aitutaki in 1821 and in Rarotonga in 1823, and succeeded in converting the natives to Christianity.

Cook Islands
The necklace of 15 tropical islands that make up the Cook Islands lie in the heart of Polynesia, approximately 1,600 miles northeast of New Zealand and mile upon mile of deserted, white beaches provide the perfect place to get away from it all. Divided into two distinct clusters, north and south, the islands cover a landmass of only 240 square kilometres, but are spread out over 2 million square kilometres of Pacific Ocean, so are truly set apart from the hustle and bustle of the urban world. The friendly, laid back attitude of the locals is infectious and time loses all meaning, perhaps not greatly surprising in a country where warmth and sunshine are enjoyed year round and temperatures average 26-28 degrees centigrade. Although tourism is still a relatively young industry in the Cook Islands, the appeal of rugged volcanic interiors, manicured coastlines, white sandy beaches, turquoise lagoons and a vibrant culture is starting to become recognised by European, American and Australasian visitors. Most Cook Islanders live outside of the islands in New Zealand or Australia, however, the 18,000-strong population are proud of their Polynesian identity, which descends from Maori culture. The northern islands are still mostly untouched by tourism and the local economy relies heavily on black pearl farming and other marine resources. The southern islands are larger and blend tradition and culture with modern living and possess much Polynesian charm. We feature accommodation on the two most populous islands in the group, Rarotonga and Aitutaki.

Cook Island Natural Launches New Range of Products Cook Island Natural adds a new range of traditional Maori products, hand-carved by local craftsmen, to its diverse retail inventory. (PRWEB) April 28, 2004 With the box office success of the New Zealand film The Whale Rider, Maori products are set to become the next big thing.
This wonderful story is typical of those that exist among many Maori populations around Polynesia. For example, Cook Islanders believe their ancestors colonized New Zealand more than 650 years ago. The brave sailors set out for New Zealand in seven Vaka’s (canoes) from Muri Lagoon, Rarotonga on what is known as the Great Migration. A monument commemorating this event is located in Ngatangiia Harbour, Rarotonga.
To share this celebration of Maori culture, Cook Island Natural has added a new range of traditional Maori products to the most diverse Cook Islands retail inventory on the internet. Company Director, Adam Murphy said ‘In light of the increasing interest in Maori culture, it is exciting to have an opportunity to share examples of traditional Cook Islands crafts with our customers.’

general introduction The Cook Islands consist of 15 islands (Rarotonga, Manihiki, Aitutaki, Nassau, Atiu, Penrhyn, Mangaia, Pukapuka, Manuae, Rakahanga, Mauke, Suwarrow, Mitiaro, Palmerston and Takutea), scattered over some 2 million square kilometres of the Pacific Ocean. They lie in the centre of the Polynesian Triangle, flanked to the west by the Kingdom of Tonga and the Samoas and to the east by Tahiti and the islands of French Polynesia. On October 26, 1888, Captain Edmund Bourke of the British Admiralty hoisted the British Flag on Rarotonga and other islands of the Southern Group and declared the islands to be part of the British Dominions. The Cook Islands became a self-governing state on August 4, 1965. Despite the political changes, the Cook Islands' culture lives on in the vibrant performance of song and dance. Cook Islanders are considered among the finest Polynesian singers and dancers and awards come often in international contests. Unlike most Western dancers, Polynesians tell a story with their bodies that matches the words of the song. Cook Islands dancing is fast, frenzied and erotic, with hip swinging and suggestive gestures. Another memento of the Cooks could be one of a very colourful range of Cook Islands stamps - sought after the world over. Similarly, Cook Islands banknotes are avidly sought by collectors throughout the world. Some of the older notes include a renowned image of 'Ina and the Shark' by local artist Rick Welland. If you appreciate art vou may like to add something or start a collection of your own. The Cook Islands' superb climate and relaxed lifestyle have attracted a number of fine artists from foreign lands. These artists are keen to welcome visitors to their studios where works range from colourful tropical oil paintings to portraits, sketches and water colours of island scenes.

http://www.traveldocs.com/ck/culture.htm
Cook Islands Oceania
CULTURE The Cook Island people are culturally part of eastern Polynesia although the island of Pukapuka stands out as different in this regard. The people of Pukapuka have a close ancestral tie to the Samoan area and while most communities in the Cooks speak a dialect of the East Polynesian, Cook Island Maori language, Pukapukans speak their own language which is part of the Samoaic sub-branch of the Polynesian language family. First, there is the question of why there appears to be a pause of up to 1500 years between the colonisation of West and East Polynesia. Archaeologists fall into two divergent camps over this issue. There are those who accept the pause in Pacific voyaging and seek to explain it in various ways. Others find it inconsistent with other aspects of Pacific cultural history and consider it, perhaps, to be an artefact of archaeological sampling. Either way, the Cook Islands lie in the border region between the core archipelagos of Fiji/West Polynesia to the west and Tahiti/Society Islands to the east. Whatever happened during the initial expansion out of the Polynesian homelands, part of the story is likely to be found in the archaeological record of the Cook group.

"The Sensual Pulse Of The Tropics!"
A Primer On The Cook Islands! The Pearls Of The South Pacific Region The South Pacific Region's COOK ISLANDERS
When European contact was first made in the late 18th century the southern islands had thriving populations. Rarotonga supported about 8000. However, European diseases virtually wiped out the pure Rarotongans in the mid-19th century and reduced their number to fewer than 2000. Since then, periodic additions of outer islanders have built Rarotonga's population back to about 9000. The total population of all the islands is about 18,000. There are believed to be a further 37,000 Cook Islanders living in New Zealand and Australia.
The islanders are of the Maori race, very closely linked in culture and language to the Maori of New Zealand, the Maohi of French Polynesia, the Maori of Easter Island (known as Rapanui) and the Kanaka Maoli of Hawaii. Current thinking posits that the islands of the South Seas were first reached by a series of waves of brown-skinned migrants from South-East Asia between 5000 and 1500 BC. Recent work by DNA researchers indicates that the forebears of the Polynesians reached P apua New Guinea possibly 7000 years ago. This became the jumping-off point for their first advances into the South Pacific Ocean. The genetic evidence is that these people co-existed with the Melanesians before moving on eastwards to what is now Polynesia without taking any Melanesian genetic elements with them.

Unheralded Destination
The Cook Islands are one of the South Pacific's more unheralded destinations. Perhaps it has something to do with their remoteness and the difficulty in getting there. They are tucked away in the central South Pacific, distant from New Zealand and Australia to the southwest and North America to the northeast.
The Cook Islands became a protectorate of Great Britain in the 1880s at the time when Britain was vying with France for influence and control in the South Pacific. In 1965, they became a self-governing state in free association with New Zealand .
Polynesian legend has it that the Cook Islands were settled several hundred years ago during the great sailing canoe migrations across the Pacific. It wasn't until the 1770s however, and the arrival of Captain James Cook, that many of the islands were "discovered." Cook saw several of the outlying islands, but he never saw Rarotonga.
These wonderful Islands are a mix of some fifteen small islands and atolls scattered over a large area of the South Pacific. The Cooks lie between French Polynesia to the east and Samoa and Tonga to the west. Rarotonga, the main island, is the government and commercial center.
