Cherryhead Conures Aratinga erythrogenys aka Red-Masked Conure (the scientific common name) aka Red-headed Conure Habitat: Native to northwester Peru and southwestern Ecuador (although feral communities of conures, including Cherryhead Conures, have started inhabiting southern California). Cherryhead Conures are found in arid tropical zones. They gather in flocks of 20 or more birds, making nests ranging from niches carved in sandstone cliffs to tree cavities. Status: Like most parrots, Cherryhead Conures are affected by habitat destruction and other influences from man. Importation of conures to Europe and the United States began well over a century ago and continued well into the present until the US passed strict laws prohibiting the importation of most parrots into the US. Captive breeding programs did not start to become established until the 1980's. Even then, wild-caught birds were more the norm than not. Thanks to the education of the public, new techniques in aviculture, and programs like MAPS that promote educated species breeding programs, people are becoming more aware of these problems and are taking the steps to try to begin helping these birds. For the pet-wanting public, hand-raised captive babies are a better choice than wild-caught birds. A wild-caught bird suffers through a brutal capture, transportation in cramped, dismal, disease-ridden quarters, watching almost 90% of the birds captured with him die from malnutrition, disease, or even shock. These birds tend to be in poor health, and do not adjust well to captivity. They are leery of people and rarely settle down to become a friendly pet.

This was hardly helpful as I knew exactly what the bird looked like but little else. Another topic of no use to me was the detailed information on the breeding of Conures. I am looking for a better source of information and would not reccommend this book to the average pet owner.

We have a daughter, Victoria, one dog, a German Shepherd, Bella, and a handful of parrots as pets. One Amazon, Boo, one Senegal, Samantha and One Hyacinth Macaw, Merlin. We have a pretty big aviary where we have about 50 more birds. Before I started this business I had birds as pets for over 20 years. I also had and have dogs, cats, even a horse, but there's something so very special about parrots. They demand more from you and give you even more in return. It's hard to understand the joy of having a strong bond with a bird until you have experienced such a thing. Parrots are also more helpless as babies than any other pets I know. You must really know what you are doing when you separate the babies from the mothers and get into the hand feeding process, which is both long and time-consuming. It can take from 10 weeks or up to 10 months, depending on the bird you choose. You must have the right tools, and they can be pretty expensive. An incubator is a must have; young babies cannot regulate their body temperatures. All this is done, so you can get a wonderful pet who can bond with you and feel closer to you than other birds. We socialize with these small youngsters in the best way we know how, so the baby parrots are feeling completely at ease with us. When all this is done, it is your turn to continue the process.

At maturity they have a yellow head and body, red cheeks, green and blue tail and distal wing, yellow upper wing, and black feet and beak. There are seven (7) different types or Genus of conures, all are closely related to Macaws. The Conures have essentially the same body shape and some are the same size as the "Mini Macaws". At birth the babies weigh about five (5) grams and have a light coat of fine pale yellow down feathers. The beautiful adulr color takes 18 to 24 months to develop. The juveniles have some green on the head, body and upper wings. As they mature the green is replaced by yellow. A full grown bird weighs three (3) to four (4) ounces and is around twelve (12) inches long.
