Crimson Star's Sun Conures Page
Sun Conures are without doubt the most attractive members of the conure family. In fact, their rich golden- yellow bodies and pronounced red cheeks, make them a sure standout in any bird collection. Until quite recently, these birds were very rare, very expensive and very noisy! Fortunately for parrot breeders everywhere, domestically raised Sun Conures are now usually readily available, not quite so expensive anymore and, if hand-raised, they are not objectionably noisy. I have been breeding Sun Conures for about eight years and have found them capable of nesting at one year of age. It therefore surprises me to keep hearing from people whose birds have done nothing after several years, except for roosting in the nestbox. In most of these cases, the owners report that both of the conures are identical in appearance, as far as they can tell. From my experience, the male and female Sun Conures can be sexed by the time they are fully feathered, at about eight weeks. At this time, the males are the ones with less red showing on the face and head; the females will appear to have more red or brighter red by comparison. By the time the babies are between four and six months old, the colors start to change and the males suddenly acquire more red on the cheeks, head and nape. The females do not lose any of their red, it's just that the males end up with more.

144. Stealth Conures Of The Genus Pyrrhura

Stealth Conures of the genus Pyrrhura
By Donald Brightsmith Originally Published in Bird Talk Magazine October 1999 Quiet and retiring may not be two words that spring to mind when you think of conures, but that is because most of us are more familiar with the Sun, Jenday, and other conures of the genus Aratinga. But don't let the name "conure" fool you, the conures of the genus Pyrrhura are different. As a researcher working on parrots in South America I have had the pleasure of seeing a large number of parrot species flying free in the wild. While one can't help but be impressed by the majestic macaws and boisterous Amazons, it is the diminutive Pyrrhura conures that repeatedly catch my eye and arouse my curiosity as they dart quietly among the forest trees. There are 18 species in this genus, but I have seen only a few in the pet trade including Green-cheeked, Maroon-bellied, Black-capped and Painted Conures. They are quiet (compared to Aratinga conures), and many of the species contain a pleasing mix of bright and subtle colors and intricate scaled patterns. These same characteristics that make them so endearing as pets, make them difficult to detect in the towering forests in which they live. As a result, the habits of these species are poorly known. While working in south eastern Peru I have been fortunate enough to observe Black-capped (P. rupicola) and Painted Conures (P. picta) on a number of occasions. From my observations, it is obvious that these birds are the masters of stealth. I spent many mornings censusing parrots from the center of a small lake in Manu National Park. Many times I would hear the quiet pic' pic' calls of a group of Painted Conures just in time to focus my binoculars and count the flock before they disappeared into the forest on the other side of the lake. Of the dozen species of parrots and macaws I recorded during these censuses only the Pyrrhuras were the only ones able to sneak across the lake without me knowing.

About Pyrrhura Conures Pyrrhura Conures are beautiful, feathered gems with an inquisitive nature and a seemingly endless amount of energy. These entertaining little birds have big bird attitudes and combine the playful nature of the larger, more vocal Conures with the strong, independent, often dominant manner of Macaws.
As a group, Pyrrhura Conures can be found all over South America as well as Costa Rica and Panama in Central America. They are forest dwellers for the most part and seem most comfortable playing and feeding high in the forest canopy. They are strong, swift flyers, gregarious, and sometimes quite raucous. Their wild diet consists of seeds, fruits, nuts, berries, some insects and their larvae. In captivity, most species of Pyrrhura Conures make enthusiastic and prolific breeders given the right environment.

Coxen's Fig-Parrot - A Bird on the Edge
By Dr Ian Gynther of the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service Southern Region Yet Coxen's Fig-Parrot still occurs in at least parts of its former range. This much we know from brief but unmistakable glimpses of individuals flying overhead, together with a number of highly credible, recent sighting reports from localities in both States. Nevertheless, no population estimates exist. Therein lies the immense challenge for the recovery team established in 1993 to reverse the bird's decline towards oblivion. Distribution and Habitat Recent observations indicate the habitat tolerance of Coxen's Fig-Parrot may be broader than simply rainforest. It now seems likely these birds occur wherever there is an abundance of fruiting figs. Such places include isolated trees in cleared paddocks, parks, gardens, open forest behind coastal dunes, and strips of vegetation along rivers and creeks. Some riparian situations in eucalypt woodland are surprisingly dry environments for what was thought to be a rainforest parrot Food So just what does this bird eat? Apparently figs, figs and more figs, with a few other things thrown in. Known food species include Moreton Bay Fig Ficus macrophylla, Green-leaved Strangling Fig F. watkinsiana, Rock or Rusty Fig F. platypoda, Small-leaved Moreton Bay Fig F. obliqua, Deciduous Fig F. superba, White Fig F. virens and Cluster Fig F. racemosa, as well as the smaller sandpaper figs F. coronata, F. fraseri and F. opposita. Other food types such as lilly pillies and certain exotic fruits have been documented too.
