Evaluating Quality in Contemporary Art
Rules of Thumbthose pithy sound-bites of distilled experienceare useful decision-making tools:
Buy the rumor, sell the fact.
Bulls make money, bears make money, pigs get slaughtered.
Look at her mother.

In the complex world of contemporary art, such succinct words of wisdom are scarce. Objectively judging the art of ones own time is difficult, but deciding where hype ends and art begins is key to making a satisfying, intelligent art acquisition.
Happily, the extended Biddington's family includes people who not only make art, but who also think about the role and value of art in culture. An artist whose perspective I especially appreciate once suggested to me 3 simple rules for discerning whether or not an artwork has what it takes to stand the test of time. If you are considering a work of art and can't quite make a judgment about it, try using the PPP Test as a decision screen:
PAST PRESENT PERSONAL
Contemporary Art Test
A work of art must balance three elements :
PASTDoes it understand the past?

The CONTEMPORARY POETRY SERIES
Submission Guidelines
Each year the University of Georgia Press selects four books of poetry for publication in its Contemporary Poetry Series. Because the Press is interested both in encouraging emerging talent and in helping to maintain poets in mid-career, two separate rounds of manuscript selection are held. A listing of winners of the Contemporary Poetry Series competition is here Poets who have never had a full-length book of poems published are asked to submit manuscripts during the month of September each year. Chapbook publication does not disqualify a writer from this round of publication, nor does publication of a book in some other genre. Poets with at least one full-length book publication with any press including this one should submit manuscripts during the month of January each year. Publication is open to writers of English, whether or not they are citizens of the United States. Poems included in the manuscripts may have been published in journals or anthologies. Collected or Selected Poems will also be considered in the January selection period. Only good machine copies of typewritten manuscripts at least 50 pages in length will be accepted. Single-spaced manuscripts are acceptable, but winning manuscripts must be double-spaced before the publication process can begin. Submissions must be accompanied by a $20.00 submission fee Please make checks payable to the University of Georgia Press. Only checks drawn on a U.S. bank

Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research
Scientific Study of Consciousness-Related Physical Phenomena
Engineering and Consciousness
The Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR) program was established at Princeton University in 1979 by Robert G. Jahn, then Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science, to pursue rigorous scientific study of the interaction of human consciousness with sensitive physical devices, systems, and processes common to contemporary engineering practice. Since that time, an interdisciplinary staff of engineers, physicists, psychologists, and humanists has been conducting a comprehensive agenda of experiments and developing complementary theoretical models to enable better understanding of the role of consciousness in the establishment of physical reality.

180. Contemporary Philosophy Of Mind: An Annotated Bibliography
Thousands of entries, categorized by subject matter. From David Chalmers.
http://www.u.arizona.edu/~chalmers/biblio.html
Contemporary Philosophy of Mind: An Annotated Bibliography
Compiled by David Chalmers , Department of Philosophy, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721. E-mail: chalmers@arizona.edu . (c) 2001 David J. Chalmers. Last updated: July 15, 2001. This is a bibliography of recent work in the philosophy of mind, philosophy of cognitive science, philosophy of artificial intelligence, and on consciousness in the sciences. It consists of 5702 entries, and is divided into six parts, each of which is further divided by topic and subtopic. Many of the entries are annotated with a brief summary. (I don't necessarily take responsibility for these annotations, many of which I wrote in the distant past.) The bibliography consists mostly of papers and books from the last few decades, with density of coverage increasing with proximity to the present. Most of the core areas of contemporary philosophy of mind are covered, but some areas (e.g. (philosophy of perception, philosophy of action, propositional attitude semantics, moral psychology) receive less coverage than others. A fuller table of contents is below. Part 6 is relatively new and is not annotated. It's not strictly "philosophy of mind", but I've put it here for convenience. Of course the division between parts is inexact. There is plenty of material by philosophers in part 6, and plenty of material by scientists in the other parts (especially parts 1, 4, and 5).
