RSS Feeds OUR AFFILIATES Thursday, March 18, 2004 Good Enough to Eat: Container gardens can deliver abundant crops in small spaces By CHRIS SMITH SPECIAL TO THE POST-INTELLIGENCER Last weekend, while shopping at Bainbridge Gardens, I ran into Junko Harui, the nursery's genial owner. Among my purchases was some spinach seed, so our conversation turned naturally to that crop. Junko told me his wife likes to plant spinach in pots this time of year. To warm the soil a bit, she puts a tent of floating row cover over each pot. The results, Junko told me, are clean, high-quality leaves. Our conversation got me thinking about container gardening. I suspect too many people who'd like to grow some of their own food believe they can't when they live in apartments or other facilities without grounds for an outdoor garden. If they'd inventory their living space though, they might find places that could grow a surprising amount of fresh produce. I'm thinking about sunny balconies and patios, window boxes and even rooftops. A sunny spot, appropriate containers, the right soil mix and a little know-how are all one needs to be a successful container gardener.

Landscape With Container Gardens
From traditional terra cotta pots to whimsical washtubs, more and more people are using containers both conventional and avant-garde to indulge their green thumbs. "Containers let you garden in the smallest of spaces, inside or outside," said Larry Connelly, a landscaper based in Austin, Texas. "They're great for growing plants that may not thrive in a traditional garden. But best of all, containers let you take a flexible attitude toward gardening and move plants around at the slightest whim without making major revisions to the landscape." With more than 23 years of experience as a landscaper, Connelly, better known as "Landscape Larry," incorporates container gardens into many of his designs.

Brightly colored butterflies can be a welcome addition to your Backyard Wildlife Habitat landscape. To attract the greatest number of butterflies and have them as residents in your yard you will need to have plants that serve the needs of all life stages of the butterfly. They need a place to lay eggs, food plants for the larva (caterpillar), a place to form a chrysalis, and nectar sources for the adult. Most adult butterflies live 10-20 days. Some, however, are believed to live no longer than three or four days, while others, such as overwintering monarchs, may live six months. Over 700 species of butterflies are found in North America. Very few are agricultural pests. Adult butterflies range in size from the half-inch pigmy blue found in southern California to the giant female Queen Alexandra's birdwing of New Guinea, which measures about 10 inches from wing tip to wing tip. Butterfly tarsi or "feet" possess a sense similar to taste. Contact with sweet liquids such as nectar causes the proboscis to uncoil.

Container gardening is one area of gardening that is more popular today than ever before and for good reason. It allows everyone the opportunity to garden regardless of how much space they have. Apartment dwellers can have flowers, vegetables and small trees growing on their balconies just as easily as home owners. Everyone can enjoy the ease and flexibility of containers. Containers can be moved anywhere colour is needed and displays can easily be changed season to season. The keys to successful container growing are a good soil mixture, adequate soil moisture, a steady nutrient supply and good drainage. Poor drainage, wet conditions and lack of water are the #1 killers of containerized plants. Containers Any container can be used provided it is large enough to accommodate the roots and has drainage holes. Clay pots are porous and allow for air and water movement through the pot wall. Plastic containers are light weight and inexpensive and come in many sizes and shapes. Wooden containers are porous and provide some insulation for soil temperature but can be heavy. Soil The medium to use in container growing is a soil-less potting soil. The soil needs to be light, airy, capable of holding water and nutrients and yet quick to drain. Garden soil is a poor choice as it tends to compact, limiting water and air movement which leads to poor plant growth. Also, insects and diseases may be present and cause problems.

An unadorned patio, deck, or balcony is a tantalizing invitation to garden in containers. Each summer, visitors to Cornell Plantations marvel at the colorful spectacle of container plantings assembled around the Lewis Education Center. The bold, sometimes flamboyant flowers and foliage evoke a sense of the tropics and mirror our warm summers. Container gardening is gaining popularity for small spaces, and as a way to accent existing gardens.
Container Selection
There are many varieties of containers to choose from when designing a container garden; gardeners are limited only by imagination. Container choices include clay or terra cotta, plastic, wood, glazed pottery, stoneware, metal, and wire - all of which come in many shapes and sizes. With any container proper drainage is vital for healthy plants. The container should be large enough to support the plants you wish to grow in it.
Care of Container Plants
At Plantations, we use a commercially available soil-less mix, which retains the water, nutrients, and oxygen needed for plant growth in our smaller container plantings. We use a 1:1 ratio of compost and soil-less mix for our larger wooden bin planters. Because the mix contains no nutrients, fertilizing is a regular part of our regimin. During summer, we apply a 20-20-20 liquid fertilizer weekly to our container plantings, and we mix a dry, organic, slow release fertilizer into the wooden bins. All container plants require frequent watering. Pots with established plants exposed to full sun and desiccating breezes may need watering as often as twice a day. Plants should be gradually "hardened off" to prevent sun and windburn prior to being put outside in the spring.

Now is the time to start herbs and vegetables for your kitchen garden indoors with an eye towards moving them to the out-of-doors as soon as the weather permits. Kitchen gardens have a long history, both in the United States and Europe. Few Europeans would be caught without a garden as a serious aspect of the batterie de cuisine, just a stone's throw from the back door, within easy grasp of the kitchen. Herbs, small fruits and vegetables, all of these are perfect for growing in large and small containers to supplement the larder of the kitchen. Nothing can quite touch the freshness imparted by homegrown herbs, and a handful chopped and tossed into a dish can turn even the most vapid meal-from-a-can into a wonderful repast. Fresh basil added to canned tomatoes go a long way towards a perfect red sauce, and thyme and chives crushed and sprinkled over cream-based soups and chowder imparts a flavor that cannot be equaled by any vulgar powder or dead, dried leaves from a bottle. Long, soft, velvety sage leaves rolled, dressed with olive oil, salt and fresh-ground pepper and then tucked into a freshly cleaned trout then thrown on the grill for ten minutes can make even the most experienced palate water in anticipation.

North Carolina State University Many people who live in an apartment, condominium, or mobile home do not grow a vegetable garden because space is not available for a garden plot. Lack of yard space is no excuse for not gardening, since many kinds of vegetables can be readily grown in containers. In addition to providing five hours or more of full sun, attention must be given to choosing the proper container, using a good soil mix, planting and spacing requirements, fertilizing, watering, and variety selection. Containers are available in many different sizes, shapes, and materials. All containers, whether clay, wood, plastic, or ceramic, should have an adequate number of holes in the bottom for proper drainage. Additional holes should be drilled or punched in containers that do not drain quickly after each watering. Drainage is reduced when the container is set on a solid surface such as a cement or patio floor. Raising the container one or two inches off the floor by setting it on blocks of wood will solve this drainage problem. The size of the container will be determined by the vegetable grown. Generally, most vegetables grown in the soil can be grown in containers as long as ample space is provided for root development. Shallow rooted crops like lettuce, peppers, radishes, and herbs need a container at least 6 inches in diameter with an eight inch soil depth. Bushel baskets, half barrels, wooden tubs, or large pressed paper containers are ideal for growing tomatoes, squash, pole beans, and cucumbers.

Tomato Growing Information for "Succession Intensive Square Foot Gardening" The purpose of this page is to explain my planting practices for container growing. I call it
"Succession Intensive Square Foot Gardening" That is planting as much as you can in the smallest of plots.
Learn to feed a family from the smallest of gardens.
They are grown in lotsa compost
Plus other amendments and fertilizer
You can use other soils also, which are explained below
But the part of growing tomatoes I like the best is that you can grow other plants with the tomatoes.
For some examples: onion, carrots, beans, parsley and kale to name a few. Succession: Planting one after another with the timing being imporant. You can harvest the plants and then add a new crop for the fall.
Intensive: Planting types of plants that have compatably rooting systems
By that I mean if your main crop is tomatoes and you plant them deep you can also plant onions which have a shallow root syestem and are harvested right at the time the tomatoes begin to flower. This is when the tomatoes need an extra boost of fertilizer to feed the new fruit and the onions won't be there to suck any of it up..
