By Lisa Harrison ( editor@plumliving.com Container gardening makes it possible to have a garden where plants wouldn't otherwise take root and gives those of us without a "real" garden a chance to flex our green thumbs! A balcony or deck can be easily transformed into a lush oasis. We've all seen spectacular displays of flowers overflowing pots but now it's time for vegetables to take center stage. Don't think vegetables can be attractive? You'll be surprised! Not only will you have a striking garden you'll have some delicious produce as well. Here are a few tricks to keeping your container garden healthy:

by John Tsutakawa, San Francisco There is a rich tradition of European and American alpine and rock gardening using containers, raised beds, alpine houses, and open gardens. "Trough" gardening, or the use of stone troughs for miniature gardens, is the most popular, yet only one of several alpine gardening forms. This article explores growing alpine plants in containers in general. Alpine container gardening incorporates many styles and forms, as specimens or collections, miniature gardens, living art, bonsai-like creations, and even tiny, picturesque landscapes. As single specimens or in groupings, containers accentuate the beauty of certain species in their unusual forms and rich blooms. Combinations of alpines can create finely-detailed, miniature gardens or artistic collages with striking contrasts in color, texture, foliage, and shape. As focal points or as part of a miniature landscape, dwarf trees and shrubs can add further detail and contrast with the other elements. What are alpine and rock garden plants?

What and How to Plant Deciding What to Plant Choosing plants is somewhat like choosing containers: before you choose, consider your requirements and the requirements of the plants. Consider the potentials and constraints of your growing site.
What kind of light does your site receive? Whether the site is sunny or shady, it's important to select plants adapted to your conditions. If it's shady, you'll be wasting your time if you plant tomatoes and certain flowers. Group plants with similar care requirements. For example, a sun-loving, drought-tolerant herb and a thirsty, shade-dependent fuchsia could not both thrive in the same container.

Container Gardening for Wildlife
Provide food for pollinators in small spaces. by Marlene Haas Container gardening is ideal for the urban naturalist trying to maximize blooms per square inch, but is also a welcome addition to a larger yard. Following a few simple guidelines will result in healthy plants cascading over pots and enticing wildlife to visit. First one must find the appropriate home for a floral occupant. When choosing a container, keep in mind what plant you want to grow in it. The size and shape of the root system and the growth rate are factors determining how big and deep of a pot you want. Large pots stay moist longer, are less subject to temperature fluctuations, and allow for more root growth and multiple plant displays. Hanging pots are the most susceptible to drying out. Pots can be made out of a number of materials. Depending on your taste and setting, you might try clay, terra-cotta, cast concrete or wood. Wood can be pressure-treated and painted, just do not use creosote, which is toxic to plants. Line pressure-treated wood with plastic if using the pot for edibles. Be creative and recycle a wooden barrel or watering can. If you’re not familiar with your locally native plants, you can experiment with them in containers before setting them loose in your yard. In many cases, local natives will be hardier than non-native plants. Locally native flowering plants will attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators. Non-hardy plants will need to have winter protection or be moved to a sheltered location. If plants are combined in one pot, just be sure that their growing conditions and growth forms are compatible.

VEGETABLE GARDEN: CONTAINER GARDEN
MG Manual Reference
Ch. 10, pp. 47 - 54
If you don't have space for a vegetable garden, or if your present site is too small, consider raising fresh, nutritious, homegrown vegetables in containers. A window sill, patio, balcony, or doorstep can provide sufficient space for a productive container garden. Problems with soil-borne diseases, nematodes, or poor soil can also be overcome by switching to container gardening. Grow vegetables that take up little space, such as carrots, radishes and lettuce, or crops that bear fruits over a period of time, such as tomatoes and peppers, for best use of space and containers. Dwarf or miniature varieties often mature and bear fruit early, but most do not produce as well overall as standard varieties. With increasing interest in container gardening, plant breeders and seed companies are working on vegetables specifically bred for container culture. These varieties are not necessarily miniature or dwarf and may produce as well as standard types if properly cared for. The amount of sunlight that your container garden spot receives may determine which crops can be grown. Generally, root crops and leaf crops can tolerate partial shade, but vegetables grown for their fruits generally need at least 5 hours of full, direct sunlight each day, and perform better with 8 to 10 hours. Available light can be increased somewhat by providing reflective materials around the plants, e.g., aluminum foil, white-painted surfaces, marble chips.

ANR-1139, New Nov 1998. Mary Beth Musgrove, Extension Program Associate, Horticulture, Auburn University O ne of the most versatile and creative forms of gardening is container gardening. Planting a container garden is much like creating a floral arrangement. However, live plants can be enjoyed for a season or longer period of time. Almost any plant can be grown in a container when proper growing conditions are provided and can add a temporary splash of color and art wherever desired. Some other reasons for container gardening are:
    • Your backyard or traditional gardening space is limited or unavailable.
    • Your time for gardening is limited.
    • Your mobility is limited to working in raised beds or containers.
    • Your gardening site is unsuitable for growing the plants you want to grow because of poor drainage, soil conditions, or too much shade or sun.
    • You have a desire to be a creative garden artist!

container gardening. Aggie Roberts, Vocational Education Instructor. A good planting mix is probably the most important element in container gardening.
    http://www.unce.unr.edu/publications/FS00/FS0042.htm
Fact Sheet: 00-42 Container Gardening Aggie Roberts, Vocational Education Instructor Container plants usually require more attention than those growing in the ground, but their potential advantages may make the extra care worthwhile. For the gardener with little or no garden space, planting in containers is the only way to have a garden. Even those with plenty of garden space can enjoy plants such as seasonal flowers, vegetables, herbs and even small shrubs or trees, grown in containers. Choosing a Container Pots, boxes, baskets or anything that holds soil in which a plant will grow may be used. The function of a container is many fold: hold a plant and its root system together; provide a reservoir for water and nutrients; provide stability for the plant as it gets bigger, and compliment the plant with its color, texture, shape and size. Materials Each type of container has its advantage and disadvantages. Clay Or Terra Cotta Clay or terra cotta containers are attractive but breakable and more easily damaged by freezing and thawing. Clay has salt accumulations over time. Using a tablespoon of white vinegar to each gallon of water helps remove this salt crust easily. Also, sealing with a commercial sealer helps reduce this problem. Cast Concrete Cast concrete is long lasting and comes in ranges of styles and sizes. It is easy to make an attractive container with this material. Plain concrete is too heavy.
