Container Gardening
Container Gardening Offers the Benefits of a Large Garden - Only Smaller!
Container gardening is simply growing your garden in - you guessed it - containers! It was born of a strong desire, and in some cases a need, to produce herbs, vegetables, and flowers within a limited amount of space and/or poor soil conditions. Container gardening can be beneficial for many individuals and situations:
Your container gardening secrets:
1) Determine how much space you have available.
2) Determine what types of plants you want to grow.
3) Select your containers accordingly.
4) Choose your soil mixture.
5) Take into account the availability of sunlight and shade.
6) Shop around for just the right plants, soils, and containers, at just the right price. Container Gardening Plant selection

Small Space and container gardening. These treatments are toxic to plants. Containers that drain poorly can mean the failure of a container garden.

Small Space and Container Gardening
Contact: Diane Relf, Extension Specialist, Environmental Horticulture August 1996 If lack of space is the only reason for not having a vegetable garden, you no longer have an excuse. Plant breeders and seed companies are offering a wide variety of vegetables that are suitable for containers. Even apartment dwellers with only a balcony can enjoy fresh vegetables grown by their own hands. Any space with ample light and access for watering and fertilizing is appropriate for container gardening, including a window sill, patio, doorstep, or rooftop. One advantage of gardening in containers is freedom from soil-borne diseases, insects, nematodes, and poor soil, all of which threaten plants in a traditional garden. There are three important considerations when choosing containers; they must 1) be large enough to support fully grown plants, 2) have adequate drainage, and 3) never have held products that are toxic to plants or people. A wide variety of containers can be used including hanging baskets, clay or plastic pots, barrels, trash cans, milk containers, and bushel baskets or wooden crates lined with plastic punched with drainage holes. Even drain pipes and cement blocks have been used to grow vegetables! When using wood products, it is important to avoid those treated with creosote or pentachlorophenol (Penta). These treatments are toxic to plants. Containers that drain poorly can mean the failure of a container garden. Always be sure there are plenty of drainage holes in the bottom or along the sides of the container. It is a good idea to raise containers off the ground with slats or bricks to allow excess water to drain freely.

Four Keys to Successful container gardening. Use Simple Maintenance Procedures. The most common problem with container gardens is too little or too much water.

Four Keys to Successful Container Gardening
Contact: Diane Relf, Extension Specialist, Environmental Horticulture April 28, 1997 If you as a gardener do four things right, your container garden will give you spectacular success: select the right container, use the proper soil, select the right plant for your site, and use simple maintenance procedures. Select Right Container A good container should be large enough to provide room for soil and roots, have sufficient head room for proper watering, provide bottom drainage, and be attractive without competing with the plant it holds. Drainage holes are the secret to success by making sure the plant never stands in wet soil. Roots require air space in the soil to live. If the desired container does not have drainage holes, consider growing the plant in another container, perhaps a plastic pot, and displaying it in the more attractive container. Size and appearance of the container should be in visual proportion to the plants grown in it and the setting where it is used. Avoid excessively heavy containers on balconies and display shelves. The container should also be of a compatible color and design or style for the setting where it is to be used. Use the Proper Soil The potting soil, or medium in which a plant grows, must be of good quality. It should be porous for root aeration and drainage, but also capable of water and nutrient retention. Most commercially prepared mixes are termed artificial, which means they contain no soil; therefore, no insects, diseases, or weeds.

Container Gardening go back to thousands of years in ancient China where Bonsai are originating, and to one of the Seven Wonder of the world, the Babylon Hanging Garden ! The modern gardeners use all types of materials to make their own containers for their gardening needs. Woods, stoneware, and plastic are the most common types. Wood are the most natural and blend into the garden seamlessly, while stoneware provides colors to the mix, plastic is less expansive but seemed to be odd in the natural setting,

Introduction
If you don't have space for a vegetable garden, consider raising fresh, nutritious, homegrown vegetables in containers. A window sill, patio, balcony, or doorstep can provide sufficient space for a productive container garden. Problems with soil-borne diseases, nematodes, or poor soil can also be overcome by switching to container gardening. Grow vegetables that take up little space such as carrots, radishes, and lettuce, or crops that bear fruits over a period of time such as tomatoes and peppers for best use of space and containers. Dwarf or miniature varieties often mature and bear fruit earlier, but most do not produce as well overall as standard varieties. With increasing interest in container gardening, plant breeders and seed companies are working on vegetables specifically bred for container culture. These varieties are not necessarily miniature or dwarf and may produce as well as standard types if properly cared for.

Container Gardening
Everybody can grow flowers and vegetables. Yes, we mean everybody. No matter where you live, no matter how small your space. For people with little space for their favorite plants, container gardening is often the answer. You can grow almost anything in a container garden. Small and compact, you can put a container on your balcony or deck, or in a sunny window. Think two dimensional. A container garden does not have to sit on the patio or deck. Many people hang containers from a ceiling or against a wall. This is called "vertical gardening". Imagination is the key to container gardens. First imagine what kind of plants you want to grow. Second, imagine the type of containers. Then, imagine the bountiful harvest of flowers and/or vegetables that you will enjoy because it is certainly within your reach. Selecting the right plants: The right plants are the ones you select to grow. They can be flowers, vegetables or even small bushes. While most people traditionally think of small plants, if you really want to grow a particular plant, give it a try. Very few plants are not suited for container gardens. Corn for example, may make an unsuitable vegetable as it takes numerous plants to properly pollinate the ears. But, most others are just fine. Even vining plants can be used. Some people grow pumpkins and squash in containers from their deck and let the vines hang down the deck or sprawl across the floor. One woman I know just had to grow pumpkins. So, she planted them in an old kiddie pool...on top of her apartment complex in downtown Los Angeles!

34. Designing A Container Garden
Learn the basics of container gardening. What types of containers should you use? What kind of soil is best? And what plants should you grow?
http://www.my-container-garden.com
Gardening for Small Spaces When one thinks of a garden, the first image to come to mind is likely to include manicured lawns and spacious flower beds. Yet in the world of the twenty-first century, where many living spaces lack the space to create such a natural panorama, the popularity of smaller, mobile, and more creative expressions of the love of nature is on the increase. Container gardens are, for many, the preferred approach to bringing to life plants of all descriptions.
Various aspects of container gardening are explored on this site. You can read about containers, their location, the selection of plants, and issues such as color, soils watering and lighting . The versatility of the container garden is illustrated. The limits of the container garden are only bound by the imagination of the container gardener.
Where Does My Garden Grow?
A container garden is an excellent option for apartment dwellers, people who live in homes with tiny yards (you know, concrete slab with a six-inch grass border), and gardeners who are renting houses whose owners don't welcome renter personalization.

  • Reader's Tip : Put "styrofoam peanuts" about four inches deep in a large pot, then cover them with landscape fabric. Fill the rest of the pot with soil and plant roses or hibiscus. This is wonderful drainage for these large plants and keeps the pot from being so heavy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! from Ethel H., anglyoggly@digitalexp.net
  • Take care not to place a plant in a container that is too large. If you put it in a pot that is too big, it will spend lots of time filling the pot with roots, and little time growing foliage.
  • A bottle cap placed crimped-edge down makes a good cover for the drainage hole in the bottom of a pot. The cap keeps soil from washing out the hole, yet the crimped cap edge allows just enough room for extra moisture to escape.
  • If a plant is too heavy to move easily, mount it on a platform with wheels or in a child's wagon painted to fit with your decor. Now it can be wheeled to the sink for watering!
  • If a plant is top heavy and keeps tipping over, try double-potting it. Put the plant and its original pot inside a larger pot, and fill the space between the two with rocks or gravel.

Any vessel is suitable for container gardening if it has drainage - even an old boot will do if there is a hole in the sole. Drainage is to container gardening as location is to real estate. It's everything. The quality makes container gardening a good starting point for gardeners with disabilities. The major considerations given to container gardening are the size of the container, adequate drainage, and the requirements of the plants. Small containers such as ceramic pots and large institutional food cans can be placed on benches for accessibility. There are a number of commercially produced plant containers available, but wooden boxes, barrels, and even old bathtubs work equally well. The benefits of container gardening including the following:
  • Mobility - Containers are especially good because they can be moved around and even started indoors before the weather is warm outside. Containers can be moved...into the sunlight, out of the sunlight, the front yard, to the back yard, wherever you want. If you container plant start to wilt, don't worry. Just move it to a less-conspicuous spot.
  • Flexibility - Containers are great for small backyards, decks and apartment balconies or patios. Containers also let you grow plants that might not otherwise be suitable for your garden. Again, the container should be at a comfortable width and height for working.
