The coalition is one of 15 statewide partnerships to receive funding under a new program encouraging state and community groups to reshape public policy to improve end-of-life care. Through its new grant program, Community-State Partnerships to Improve End-of-Life Care, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation will award a total of $11.25 million over three years to up to 25 such coalitions, each of which will receive either a 3-year project grant or a 1-year planning grant. The grants will support broad-based, multidisciplinary coalitions that tap citizens, health care professionals and policymakers to identify problems, make recommendations and build public support for practical policies, regulations and guidelines to improve care of the dying. Planning grant recipients will have the opportunity to apply for funding later to implement their plans.

The Impact of School Library Media Centers on Academic Achievement. ERIC Digest.
Advocates of school library media programs have long been convinced of the relationship between quality library media programs and academic achievement. Most studies of this relationship were conducted between 1959 and 1979, were limited in scope, and usually used a small number of subjects in a limited geographical area. This study was designed both to update the existing research and to examine the relationship between library media programs and student achievement.
METHODOLOGY
Ideally, schools included in the sample for a study such as this would be selected on a random, stratified, or quota basis. None of these sampling designs was possible, because schools included in the sample had to have library media centers that responded to the 1989 survey of school library media centers in Colorado and had to use the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) or Tests of Achievement and Proficiency (TAP). These data were available for only 221 of 1,331 public elementary and secondary schools in Colorado during the 1988-89 school year. The study relied entirely upon available data about school library media centers and their school and community contexts to predict norm-referenced test scores.

The Entry Portfolio Requirement
The entry portfolio will become the students' academic portfolio. Throughout their program of study, students will be encouraged to add to their academic portfolio:
1) Career and academic goals,
2) Periodic self-assessment of their progress toward degree and career goals, and
3) The best of their work in the program.
Included in the portfolio will be descriptions of field experiences such as internships, independent studies, field projects, mentoring experiences, course projects, and research studies.
Students in the School Media Program will also need to prepare materials for the portfolio that relate to certification. Students in the School Media Program will need to show how they meet the certification requirements by including examples of work completed (narratives, papers, media) which exemplify the certification criteria. It is recommended that the criteria and materials be organized around the values of scholarship, attitude, integrity, leadership, and service. Requirements for school media certification in Connecticut include:

Austin Readers for School Libraries,
Austin, TX The mission of the Austin Readers for School Libraries is to "encourage and facilitate children's reading, to instill a passion for books, and to promote libraries as strong, vital institutions that are central to the well being of their schools and community." In 1995, the Board of the Austin ISD threatened to cut library positions in several of the city's smaller elementary schools. One parent, Virginia Raymond, made an impassioned plea before the Austin Independent School District Board to retain the staff. A school library supporter on the board was so impressed with Ms. Raymond that he suggested she reach out to other parents who shared her belief in the importance of quality library service in the schools. Thus the Austin Readers for School Libraries were born. Georgia O'Keeffe Elementary School Friends of the Library
