ILS Career Night Professor Nancy Disbrow and Dr. Jane McGinn organized a career night for SCSU MLS students. On April 6, 2004, the Information and Library Science department hosted eleven distinguished guests from the Connecticut library community. Featured guests included Ken Wiggin, Connecticut State Librarian, and Chris Bradley, the President-elect of the Connecticut Library Association. Professor Disbrow kicks off Career Night Dean Harris addresses a gathering of ILS students Students were provided a resource packet containing information regarding library careers, and all of this information is available online. The packet contained information on student membership in the American Library Association Guide to Employment Sources in the Library and Information Professions and the Bibliography of Traditional and Web-based Library Career Resources . Information on how to apply for a library job was also provided. Chairperson Bielefield greets students. From left to right: Ken Wiggin, Dawn Higginson, Chris Bradley Student attendance of the event was strong Ken Wiggin noted that Connecticut leads the nation in the number of MLS recipients working in their libraries. He spoke with optimism of the future of librarianship, noting the role of technology in the rising demand for archivists and record managers. The changing nature of patron interaction from in person to online was discussed, as was the advantage the online students will have regarding this trend. Services to elderly patrons were also cited as another area of significant expansion and change.

    The library, located in the town office complex on Main Street South, has a collection of over 50,000 items including: large print books, periodicals and daily newspapers; videos; books on tape and other audio cassettes; compact discs; cameras; photographs and puzzles. As a member of a computerized circulation network, the library has access to the collections of 40 member libraries. Special services include telephone and walk-in reference; interlibrary loan, data base searches, and availability of a copy machine, word processor and typewriter. The gallery may be reserved for community meetings and gatherings. Programs include year-round programs for children; an August concert series; art exhibits; book discussions and other special events. The library is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays, October through May.
