The Sensibilities of Our Forefathers
The History of Sodomy Laws in the United States
By George Painter
Connecticut
"[A] leud, prophane, corrupting, incorridgable pson, a notorious lyar, besides that sodomitticall attempt so proved, and other filthy defying wayes, tending to the very destruction of mankinde[.]" The Colonial Period, 1607-1776 provided that laws adopted by the Connecticut authorities could not be inconsistent with those of England. This recognized sodomy as a capital offense for males only. A sodomy statute was enacted in 1642 paraphrasing Leviticus 20:13. "If any man lyeth with mankind as hee lyeth with woman, both of them have committed abomination, they both shall surely be put to death" and citing Leviticus as its authority. Apparently under this statute, one William Plaine of Guilford was executed in 1646 for masturbating a number of young men in the town. In a case from 1653, six young males in New Haven were sentenced to a public flogging for "much wickedness in a filthy corrupting way" with each other. Their acts were "of such a filthy nature as is not fit to be made known in a public way[.]"

Dear Representatives Hansen and Berman: This letter constitutes a formal ethics complaint against U.S. Representative Corrine Brown (D-FL), and a request for an inquiry into whether Rep. JESSE ROOT, 1798 Our ancestors, therefore, as a free, sovereign, and independent people, very early established a constitution of government by their own authority; which was adapted to their situation and circumstances, and enacted laws for the due and regular administration of justice, for the propagation of knowledge and virtue, for the preservation of the public peace, and for the security and defense of the state against their savage enemies. New Haven did the same with little variation in point of form. Their common law was derived from the law of nature and of revelation - those rules and maxims of immutable truth and justice, which arise from the eternal fitness of things, which need only to be understood, to be submitted to, as they are themselves the highest authority; together with certain customs and usages, which had been universally assented to and adopted in practice, as reasonable and beneficial.... This constitution of our government, framed by the wisdom of our ancestors about 160 years ago, adapted to their condition and circumstances, was so constructed as to enable the legislature to accommodate laws to the exigencies of the state, through all the changes it hath undergone. And [it] is nearly coeval with our existence as a community, and analogous to the spirit of which all our laws have been made, from time to time, as cases occurred and the good of the public requires. And can it be said, with the least color of truth, that the laws of the state are not adequate to all the purposes of government and of justice?
