    Geography
Generally rectangular in shape, Connecticut extends c.90 mi (145 km) from east to west and c.55 mi (90 km) from north to south. The state is divided into two roughly equal sections, usually called the eastern highland and the western highland, which are separated by the Connecticut Valley lowland. The Connecticut River, which flows through only the northern half of this lowland, veers off to the southeast at Middletown in central Connecticut. In the south along Long Island Sound is a low, rolling coastal plain. The western highland, with the Taconic Mts. and the Litchfield Hills, is more rugged than the eastern highland. A few isolated peaks in the west are over 2,000 ft (610 m) high. The Thames and the rivers emptying into it drain the eastern highland, and the Housatonic, with its chief tributary, the Naugatuck, drains the western highland. The Connecticut shore is a popular summer resort area, and the protected waters of Long Island Sound lure boating enthusiasts. Bridgeport is the largest city, with

GEOLOGY AND GEOGRAPHY OF NEW YORK BIGHT BEACHES
A "Bite" of the Big Apple
This web site is a collection of short reports and image libraries about the natural history of the New York Bight region. The goal of this project is to provide basic information about the beaches scattered throughout the New York Bight, emphasizing those within Gateway National Recreation Area (New York and New Jersey). Each web page linked to this report carries a theme related to the topics listed below. The web pages can be followed in a chronological order by clicking on the NEXT PAGE web link on the bottom of each page. But first...
Check out the "new stuff..." A Brief Geologic History of Raritan Bay. "Lost Culture..."
A bight is a general term for a bend or curve in the shoreline of an open coast. In the New York region it refers to the great expanse of shallow ocean between Long Island (to the north and east) and the New Jersey Coast (to the south and west). Because Long Island trends generally east to west in relation to mainland of New Jersey it creates a great right angle in the general geometry of the Atlantic coastline. The Hudson River's outer harbor and the Raritan Bay (shown in the image above) constitute only a fraction of the greater New York Bight region. NEWARK BASIN AND CONNECTICUT RIVER BASIN
The Palisades rise above the western edge of the Hudson River. The Palisades mark the eastern margin of the Newark Basin in Northern New Jersey. The George Washington Bridge and Midtown Manhattan are in the distance.
The Newark Basin (in New Jersey and Pennsylvania) and the Connecticut River Basin are both "aborted rift" basins (rift basins that are no longer actively widening via rift-style tectonism - see map below). Both basins contain characteristic sedimentary sandstones and mudrocks that usually bear a red or brownish appearance from an abundance of iron oxide minerals (hematite and limonite). (Homes built of stone from the Newark Basin are called "brownstones.") Fossils are not abundant, but early Mesozoic dinosaur skeletons and trackways have been found. Freshwater shell material and poorly preserved fish and plant remains are also found in some areas. Formation of the Newark Basin and Early Atlantic Basin Both the Newark and Connecticut river basins contain "traprocks." Traprocks are mineral-rich mafic volcanic rocks. Their resistance to erosion (relative to the surrounding sandstone and shale produce elevated regions above the surrounding terrain. They form the core of gently dipping cuestas throughout the Mesozoic basins along the Atlantic Margin. The volcanic rocks formed in three ways:
    • 1. The mafic igneous bodies intruded upward between sedimentary layers forming sills and stocks, cooling in the subsurface. The classic example of a volcanic sill is the Palisades along the western side of the Hudson River.

In comparison with most states, Vermont is small in total area. Still, Vermont is the second largest state in New England after Maine, just a few hundred square miles larger than New Hampshire. The Green Mountain State is bordered by Canada, New York, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. It is 157.4 miles in length, 90.3 miles wide at the Canadian border*, and 41.6 miles along the Massachusetts border. The Connecticut River forms the eastern boundary, while the western boundary runs down the middle of Lake Champlain for more than half of its length. The state has 223 mountains over 2,000 feet in elevation. The mountainous areas of the state are primarily forested. In fact, although Vermont was virtually clear-cut of timber during the late 19th century, more than 75 percent of the state's total area is now forested. Beneath the mountains and rolling hills are the fertile valleys that support an extensive dairy industry.
