CT The name "Connecticut" comes from an Algonquin Indian word meaning "on the long tidal river". Connecticut was one of the original 13 states. The Connecticut River cuts through the center of the state, flowing into Long Island Sound, Connecticut's outlet to the Atlantic Ocean. Connecticut's rural areas and small towns contrast sharply with its industrial cities. Many towns center around a small park, known as a "green". Near the green may stand a small white church, a town meeting hall, a tavern and several colonial houses. Forests, rivers, lakes, waterfalls and a sandy shore add to the state's beauty. Connecticut is also an important industrial state. GOVERNMENT:

    Geography
Generally rectangular in shape, Connecticut extends c.90 mi (145 km) from east to west and c.55 mi (90 km) from north to south. The state is divided into two roughly equal sections, usually called the eastern highland and the western highland, which are separated by the Connecticut Valley lowland. The Connecticut River, which flows through only the northern half of this lowland, veers off to the southeast at Middletown in central Connecticut. In the south along Long Island Sound is a low, rolling coastal plain. The western highland, with the Taconic Mts. and the Litchfield Hills, is more rugged than the eastern highland. A few isolated peaks in the west are over 2,000 ft (610 m) high. The Thames and the rivers emptying into it drain the eastern highland, and the Housatonic, with its chief tributary, the Naugatuck, drains the western highland. The Connecticut shore is a popular summer resort area, and the protected waters of Long Island Sound lure boating enthusiasts. Bridgeport is the largest city, with

  • AREA OF SPECIALIZATION
  • Geography is often called the science of where, and geographers use their expertise to figure out where to build a hospital, a bridge, or a highway. By understanding the complicated relationship between human beings and their environment, geographers find real-world solutions to tough problems, making cities and towns better places to live, helping companies market their products, and protecting and preserving the earth's resources. Career possibilities are boundless. A land use planner works to expand a city's downtown, plan parks and open spaces, or route a new highway. A location specialist works for a mall developer, finding just the right spot to build. A mapping specialist uses the latest in computer and remote-sensing equipment to construct maps for the U.S. Department of Defense. A teacher inspires students to explore their world. What connects all of these professionals? There's a good chance they were geography majors. National recognition for geography education is on the rise, too. A recent national education initiative identified geography as one of five core curriculum subjects that Americans will be required to master throughout their elementary and secondary school careers during the next decade.

    Pre-Colonial and Colonial History
Before European arrival, New Haven was the home of the Quinnipiack tribe of Native Americans , who lived in villages around the harbor and subsisted off of local fisheries and the farming of maize . The area was briefly visited by Dutch explorer Adriaen Block in 1614. Dutch traders set up a small trading system of beaver pelts with the local inhabitants, but trade was sporadic and the Dutch did not settle permanently in what would become New Haven.

    Introduction
Watershed Geography Special Designations Special Attributes Issues Confronting The River A Cultural Snapshot Watershed Geography The 410 mile-long Connecticut River is New England's longest river. Its headwaters are Fourth Connecticut Lake at the Canadian border, and it empties into Long Island Sound at Old Saybrook, CT. The watershed encompasses an area of over 11,000 square-miles and includes parts of four states Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. The River is the boundary between Vermont and New Hampshire (but is wholly in NH). The watershed is 80% forested, 12% agricultural, 3% developed, and 5% wetlands and water. There are 390 towns, villages and cities, which are home to 2.3 million people. The River drops 2,400 feet from its source to the sea, and has a daily average flow of nearly 16,000 cubic feet per second (cfs). The flow has ranged as high as 282,000 cfs and as low as 971 cfs. The lower 60 miles of the River are tidal, with the boundary between salt and freshwater about 17 miles from its mouth under normal conditions. Its waters represent 70% of the freshwater inflow to L.I. Sound. The Connecticut has 38 major tributaries, 26 of which drain 100 square miles or more. All told, there are over 20,000 miles of streams in the watershed.

In the early 1800s, it was the intellectual capital of the U.S. It has one of the finest harbors on the east coast. Originally, it was almost an island, connected to the mainland by "Boston neck", a strip just wide enough for one road (one of the reasons it could hold out so long in its rebellion against the English). Over the years, the neck was widened until it became wider than the "head" attached to it. Part of this filling-in process created the Back Bay. See Whitehill, Boston, A Topographical History

State Curriculum Frameworks and Content Standards - Draft September 1995
    The Arts and Geography
    Multidisciplinary Curriculum Frameworks
APPLICATION NO : R215G30026 APPLICANT : Connecticut State Department of Education Division of Teaching and Learning 165 Capitol Avenue Hartford, Connecticut 06106 CONTACT PERSON : Mitchell Chester TELEPHONE : (203) 566-5871 AWARD TO DATE : $747,905 PROJECT PERIOD : 07/01/93-06/30/96 The purpose of this proposal is to provide the State of Connecticut with three new curriculum frameworks: one in geography, one in the arts, and a multidisciplinary arts and geography framework. These frameworks will delineate the curricular, instructional and assessment components of world-class geography, arts, and multidisciplinary geography/arts programs for ALL students. In conjunction with developing the frameworks, the project will produce supporting materials (e.g., examples of good assessment practices) to serve as resources for school districts as they implement the frameworks, provide training for teachers and curriculum specialists in the implementation of the frameworks, and disseminate the frameworks throughout the state. The curriculum frameworks will help the state achieve its goals of significantly reducing racial isolation in the state's public schools, and providing quality, integrated education for all students. The project's design for the development of these frameworks entails a broadly based collaborative process with teachers of geography and the arts, selected school districts, the Connecticut Commission on the Arts, the Connecticut Geographic Alliance, the staff of the State Department of Education, and selected outside experts and resource people. In addition, the process utilizes the expertise of the state's Regional Educational Service Centers, institutions of higher education, professional education organizations, business organizations and community groups.
