Learning Opportunities for Families
Deb Richards, Consultant, CT State Department of Education The Bureau of Special Education, in collaboration with the Connecticut Parent Advocacy Center, continues to host introductory training sessions on an overview of the Settlement Agreement. This year, the focus has been on training districts to conduct the training locally. The feedback provided last year suggested parents wanted training conducted in their home district, with parents of children in the same age range. Thirty-three districts have attended training during the 2003-04 school year and received the materials to conduct training locally. This is in addition to the twenty districts that hosted the training last school year. Interactions with districts and families over the past eighteen months have made it apparent to the CT State Department of Education (CSDE) and SERC that many families are not aware of the tremendous efforts that have been made by districts to improve LRE practices at the local level. To assist districts in moving forward with implementing their LRE action plans, and to inform families about the scope and quality of progress being made, the CSDE would like to encourage districts to take advantage of a variety of resources. As part of the training and technical assistance to targeted districts, Barbara Slone, Family Consultant at SERC, can assist district teams with developing methods of reaching out to and partnering with families. SERC Library resources (e.g., books, journals, instructional materials, and videos) are available to help districts provide parents/guardians with information. Families can also obtain information about SERC-sponsored workshops and conferences, and order documents by contacting SERC at its toll-free number, (800) 842-8678, or by downloading documents from the SERC website at

The CT Parent Advocacy Center, Inc. (CPAC) is a statewide nonprofit organization that offers information and support to families of children with any disability or chronic illness, age birth through 21. The Center is committed to the idea that parents can be the most effective advocates for their children, given the confidence that knowledge and understanding of special education law and its procedures can bring. It is CPAC's mission to support families in their efforts on behalf of their children with disabilities. Through outreach efforts and referrals from schools, social service agencies and other parents, the number of families that the Connecticut Parent Advocacy Center serves has grown dramatically over the past 15 years. We continue to take pride in providing prompt and personal assistance to all who contact us.
