In the late summer of 2003, about 50 members of the MiddleWeb Listserv joined school/family expert Anne Henderson for an important conversation about strengthening the linkages between middle schools and the families of the students they serve. TWELVE THINGS PARENTS SHOULD KNOW
The complete title of this excellent handout from Parent Leadership Associates, Inc. is "As a Parent, Here are 12 Things You Should Know About and Expect From Your Schools and Yourself." It describes why parent involvement is important, what parents should expect from schools, and what schools hope for from parents. Poorly run schools will want to avoid this one! Here's a quote: "You're more likely to get what you want for your child if you work with other parents. If you are in a school that is not parent-friendly, administrators might perceive you as a fruitcake or a member of a powerful organization, depending on how many allies you have." Middle School Helps Parents With Resource Center
Part of a national partnership program to encourage parent and community involvement in schools, a parent resource center in a Connecticut middle school helps parents understand their middle-school-age youngsters. Included: Tips for starting a parent center in your school! Parents of middle school children often ponder why a once-loving child seems to change, almost overnight, as puberty approaches. A formerly sweet child now sulks. Respect turns to belligerence and intelligent behavior gives way to irresponsible conduct. For many parents of middle school children, the terrible twos would be a welcome change from the turbulent teens. Timothy Neville, principal of

If time permits try to give your time to help on a school activity or volunteer in your school. If you check with your teacher, principal, or PTA/O you will find ways to be involved that can fit into your busy schedule. Special education and related services are required by federal and state law. The laws are intended to ensure that young children with disabilities are provided a free and appropriate public education in accordance with their individual needs. Preschool special education as defined by the federal law known as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is for 3-, 4- and 5-year-old children with disabilities who require special education. In Connecticut, special education and related services are available to eligible children by age 3 and are provided by local and regional school districts. If Dr. Seuss had a gifted child ....
by Mary Beth Northrup
Dear Mom-I-am, dear Mom-I-am, we have a problem, Mom-I-am. Your son won't do what he must do. He drives me crazy, yes it's true! He will stall and squirm and hum, and leave all of his work undone. He dreams and will not pay attention, have you considered medication? With other kids he does not play, he is alone much of the day. Something does not seem quite right, because I know he must be bright. He seems to learn, despite the rest, but the work is not his best. He is disruptive, yes it's true. He just won't do what he must do! Yes, teacher, I can really see, how frustrating all this must be, A child who does not meet the norm, a child whose mold won't fit the form. I've had him tested on WISC-III, by your approved test agency. He scores far higher than the mean, there's more to this that can be seen. So help us, help us find the way, to teach this child best if we may. He is not like the rest you see, he acts and thinks far differently.
